Item type:Item, A facile method to prepare "green" nano-phosphors with a large Stokes-shift and solid-state enhanced photophysical properties based on surface-modified gold nanoclusters(2017-12-15) ;Cheng, C. H. ;Huang, H. Y. ;Talite, M. J. ;Chou, W. C.Yeh, J. M.Colloidal nano-materials, such as quantum dots (QDs) have been applied to light-conversion nano phosphors due to their unique tunable emission. However, most of the QDs involve toxic elements and are synthesized in a hazardous solvent. In addition, conventional QD nano-phosphors with a small Stokes shift suffered from reabsorption losses and aggregation-induced quenching in the solid state. Here, we demonstrate a facile, matrix-free method to prepare eco-friendly nano-phosphors with a large Stokes shift based on aqueous thiolate-stabilized gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) with simple surface modifications. Our method is just to drop GSH-AuNCs solution on the aluminum foil and then surface modified AuNCs (Al-GSH-AuNCs) can be spontaneously precipitated out of the aqueous solution. Compared with pristine GSH-AuNCs in solution, the Al-GSH-AuNCs exhibit enhanced solid-state PL quantum yields, lengthened PL lifetime, and spectral blue shift, which can be attributed to the aggregation induced emission enhancement facilitated by surface modifications. Such surface-treatment induced aggregation of AuNCs can restrict the surface-ligand motion, leading to the enhancement of PL properties in the solid state. In addition, the Al-GSH-AuNCs nano-phosphors with a large Stokes shift can mitigate the aggregation-induced PL quenching and reabsorption losses, which would be potential candidates for "green" nano-phosphors. Y. ;Cai, K. B. ;Chang, L. Y. ;Chen, P. W.Lin, T. N.Heavy-metal-containing quantum dots (QDs) with engineered electronic states have been served as luminophores in luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) with impressive optical efficiency. Unfortunately, those QDs involve toxic elements and need to be synthesized in a hazardous solvent. Recently, biocompatible, eco-friendly gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), which can be directly synthesized in an aqueous solution, have gained much attention for promising applications in 'green photonics'. Here, we explored the solid-state photophysical properties of aqueoussolution- processed, glutathione-stabilized gold nanoclusters (GSH-AuNCs) with a ligand-tometal charge-transfer (LMCT) state for developing 'green' LSCs. We found that such GSH-AuNCs exhibit a large Stokes shift with almost no spectral overlap between the optical absorption and PL emission due to the LMCT states, thus, suppressing reabsorption losses. Compared with GSH-AuNCs in solution, the photoluminescence quantum yields (PL-QYs) of the LSCs can be enhanced, accompanied with a lengthened PL lifetime owing to the suppression of non-radiative recombination rates. In addition, the LSCs do not suffer from severe concentration-induced PL quenching, which is a common weakness for conventional luminophores. As a result, a common trade-off between light-harvesting efficiency and solid-state PL-QYs can be bypassed due to nearly-zero spectral overlap integral between the optical absorption and PL emission. We expect that GSH-AuNCs hold great promise for serving as luminophores for 'green' LSCs by further enhancing solid-state PL-QYs.Item type:Item, Electronic structure investigation of a charge density wave coupled to a metal-to-metal transition in Ce3Co4Sn13(2018-12-18) ;Singh, A. ;Huang, H. Y. ;Chin, Y. Y. ;Liao, Y. F.Huang, T. C.We study the electronic structure of the skutterudite Ce3Co4Sn13, which is known to exhibit a charge density wave (CDW) transition, at temperature T-CDW similar to 160 K, coupled to a metal-to-metal transition. We use temperature dependent hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to investigate the occupied and unoccupied electronic states of Ce3Co4Sn13. The Co 2p and Sn 3p core level spectra show small but finite shifts in binding energy positions across T-CDW while Ce 3d core level spectra do not show any change across the transition. The Ce M-4,M-5-edge XAS spectrum compared with calculations indicate a typical trivalent ionic Ce3+ spectral shape, ruling out Kondo screening in Ce3Co4Sn13. In contrast, the Co L-2,L-3-edge XAS spectrum compared with a calculated spectrum shows evidence for hybridization with neighboring Sn atoms in a trigonal prismatic co-ordination. Temperature dependent XAS across the Co L-2,L-3-edge shows a small shift across T-CDW, consistent with HAXPES results. Detailed XAS measurements as a function of temperature show that the spectral shifts occur with a hysteresis across T-CDW , indicative of a first-order transition. Valence band spectra show a normal Fermi edge above and below T-CDW. The Co 3d states are observed at a binding energy of similar to 2 eV while the Ce 4f states occur as a weak feature within 0.5 eV of the Fermi level. The results suggest an unusual CDW transition coupled to a metal-to-metal transition in Ce3Co4Sn13.Item type:Item, Exploiting a monolithic passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser to mimic a single neuron cell under periodic stimulation(2020-07-15) ;Chen, Y. F. ;Lee, C. C. ;Hsiao, J. Q. ;Huang, H. Y.Tsou, C. H.A monolithic passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser under periodic pulse pumping is originally exploited to emulate the response of a single neuron cell stimulated by periodic pulse inputs. Experimental results reveal that the output characteristics of the monolithic passively Q-switched laser can analogously manifest not only the firing patterns but also the frequency-locked plateaus of the single neuron cell. Moreover, the sine circle map is innovatively used to generate the output pulse sequences that can exactly correspond to experimental firing patterns. The present exploration indicates that a monolithic passively Q-switched solid-state laser is highly feasible to be developed as a compact artificial neuron cell. S. ;Huang, H. Y. ;Chou, C. P. ;機械工程學系Department of Mechanical EngineeringIn order to clarify the effect of the addition of Co to SAC105 solder, the reaction between solder and Au/Ni surface finish has been investigated, and the joint strength was also evaluated by a ball shear test. After soldering, the interfacial reaction layer in the SAC105 Co solder contained Co, and the chemical composition of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) were identified as (Cu,Ni,Co)(6)Sn(5) and (Ni,Cu,Co)(3)Sn(4) by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), which significantly differed from that of SAC105 solder. After multiple reflows, the formation rate of the (Cu,Ni,Co)(6)Sn(5) IMC for the Co-added solder slow compared with that of (Cu,Ni)(6)Sn(5) IMC for SAC105 solder. Experimental results clearly indicate that adding small amounts (0.05 wt.%) of Co to SAC105 solder strongly affected the formation of the IMC at the interface. Furthermore, ball shear test results demonstrate that the SAC105 and SAC105 Co solder joints have good joint reliability. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. P. ;機械工程學系Department of Mechanical EngineeringThe present study details the microstructure evolution of the interfacial intermetallic compounds (IMCs) layer formed between the Sn-xAg-0.5Cu (x = 1, 3, and 4 wt.%) solder balls and electroless Ni-P layer, and their bond strength variation during aging. The interfacial IMCs layer in the as-reflowed specimens was only (Cu,Ni)(6)Sn(5) for Sn-xAg-0.5Cu solders. The (Ni,Cu)(3)Sn(4) IMCs layer formed when Sn-4Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu solders were used as aging time increased. However, only (Cu,Ni)(6)Sn(5) IMCs formed in Sn-1Ag-0.5Cu solders, when the aging time was extended beyond 1500 h. Two factors are expected to influence bond strength and fracture modes. One of the factors is that the interfacial (Ni,Cu)(3)Sn(4) IMCs formed at the interface and the fact that fracture occurs along the interface. The other factor is Ag(3)Sn IMCs coarsening in the solder matrix, and fracture reveals the ductility of the solder balls. The above analysis indicates that during aging, the formation of interfacial (Ni,Cu)(3)Sn(4) IMCs layers strongly influences the pull strength and the fracture behavior of a solder joint. This fact demonstrates that interfacial layers are key to understanding the changes in bonding strength. Additionally, comparison of the bond strength with various Sn-Ag-Cu lead-free solders for various Ag contents show that the Sn-1Ag-0.5Cu solder joint is not sensitive to extended aging time.Item type:Item, Perceptual Zero-Tree Coding with Efficient Optimization for Embedded Platforms(2013-08-01) ;Wu, B. F. ;Huang, H. Y. ;Wang, J. H. ;Chen, C. J.Chen, Y. L.This study proposes a block-edge-based perceptual zero-tree coding (PZTC) method, which is implemented with efficient optimization on the embedded platform. PZTC combines two novel compression concepts for coding efficiency and quality: block-edge detection (BED) and the low-complexity and low-memory entropy coder (LLEC). The proposed PZTC was implemented as a fixed-point version and optimized on the DSP-based platform based on both the presented platform-independent and platform-dependent optimization technologies. For platform-dependent optimization, this study examines the fixed-point PZTC and analyzes the complexity to optimize PZTC toward achieving an optimal coding efficiency. Furthermore, hardware-based platform-dependent optimizations are presented to reduce the memory size. The performance, such as compression quality and efficiency, is validated by experimental results.Item type:Item, Study of the performance of stainless steel A-TIG welds(2008-04-01) ;Shyu, S. W. ;Huang, H. Y. ;Tseng, K. H. ;Chou, C. P.機械工程學系The purpose of the present work was to investigate the effect of oxide fluxes on weld morphology, arc voltage, mechanical properties, angular distortion and hot cracking susceptibility obtained with TIG welding, which applied to the welding of 5 mm thick austenitic stainless steel plates. A novel variant of the autogenous TIG welding process, oxide powders (Al2O3, Cr2O3, TiO2, SiO2 and CaO) was applied on a type 304 stainless steel through a thin layer of the flux to produce a bead on plate welds. The experimental results indicated that the increase in the penetration is significant with the use of Cr2O3, TiO2, and SiO2. A-TIG welding can increase the weld depth to bead-width ratio, and tends to reduce the angular distortion of the weldment. It was also found that A-TIG welding can increase the retained delta-ferrite content of stainless steel 304 welds and, in consequence, the hot-cracking susceptibility of as-welded is reduced. Physically constricting the plasma column and reducing the anode spot are the possible mechanism for the effect of certain flux on A-TIG penetration.Item type:Item, The Rectenna Design on Contact Lens for Wireless Powering of the Active Intraocular Pressure Monitoring System(2013) ;Cheng, H. W. ;Jeng, B. M. ;Chen, C. Y. ;Huang, H. Y.Chiou, J. C.This paper proposed a wireless power harvesting system with micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) fabrication for noninvasive intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement on soft contact lens substructure. The power harvesting IC consists of a loop antenna, an impedance matching network and a rectifier. The proposed IC has been designed and fabricated by CMOS 0.18um process that operates at the ISM band of 5.8 GHz. The antenna and the power harvesting IC would be bonded together by using flip chip bonding technologies without extra wire interference. The circuit utilized an impedance transformation circuit to boost the input RF signal that improves the circuit performance. The proposed design achieves an RF-to-DC conversion efficiency of 35% at 5.8 GHz.
