Item type:Item, 16-channel optical add-drop multiplexer consisting of a planar waveguide concave grating(2007) ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Huang, Yang-Tung ;Huang, Jung-Yaw ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA new 16-channel optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM), which consists of one planar waveguide concave grating, two main ports, coupled waveguides, sixteen add ports, sixteen drop ports, and sixteen sets of 2 x 2 switches, is proposed.. The transmission characteristics of the light detected at the output waveguide are simulated by using a design example. The on-off crosstalks are less than -35.17 dB with the insertion losses of 4.71 to 4.83 dB.Item type:Item, A planar waveguide concave grating employing dielectric mirrors(2008-03-01) ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Huang, Yang-Tung ;Huang, Jung-Yaw ;電子工程學系及電子研究所光電工程學系Dielectric mirrors, which yield high-reflectances on grating facets, are proposed for the design of a planar waveguide concave grating. The transfer-matrix method is used to derive an expression for the reflectance of a series of air slots and high-index stacks. The Full-WAVE software, a finite difference time-domain EM solver from R-Soft, is used to evaluate the loss of the resulting 2D waveguide grating. The simulation results show that the polarization-dependent loss (PDL) is below 0.25 dB when the proposed dielectric mirror is used. The influence of the width variation of the dielectric stack is also taken into account. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. With the Gaussian approximation a modified formula is proposed and is compared with the numerical model of the scalar diffraction theory by using a design example. The sources of loss caused by the flat-top design and the grating are taken into consideration. The optimal separation between the two outmost focal points is obtained and the spectral response of the demultiplexer with a ripple below 0.04 dB is achieved.Item type:Item, The impact of fabrication errors on a flat-top grating-based planar waveguide demultiplexer(2007-11-01) ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Huang, Yang-Tung ;Huang, Jung-Yaw ;電子工程學系及電子研究所光電工程學系The spectral performance of a demultiplexer is significantly affected by the phase and amplitude errors due to fabrication errors. We estimate the impact of fabrication errors on a flat-top grating-based planar waveguide demultiplexer using a design example. Simulation results show that the photomask resolution resulting in a phase error should be lower than 40 nm when a crosstalk criterion of -30 dB is given. The impact of amplitude errors is not distinct until the reduced amount of the facet width is greater than 0.5 mu m and the grating side-wall angle offset from the vertical is larger than 1 degrees.
