Item type:Item, Bonding anisotropy in multiferroic TbMnO(3) probed by polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy(2009-01-26) ;Chen, J. M. ;Lee, J. M. ;Chen, C. K. ;Chou, T. L.Lu, K. T.O K- and Mn L(2,3)-edges x-ray absorption spectra of orthorhombic TbMnO(3) single crystals show strong polarization dependence, in contrast with results of previous experiments on orthorhombic LaMnO(3) and DyMnO(3) thin films that show nearly isotropic spectral structure. First-principles calculations reveal that TbMnO(3) exhibits a zigzag e(g) orbital ordering ground state. The highly distorted MnO(6) octahedron and orbital ordering in TbMnO(3) produce highly anisotropic Mn-O bonding within the ab plane, a frustration of the magnetic ordering, and the formation of complicated incommensurate magnetic structures.Item type:Item, Bonding anisotropy in multiferroic TbMnO3 probed by polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy(2009-01-26) ;Chen, J. P.To shed light on the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in NaxCoO2 center dot yH(2)O, the Mn doping effects are studied. X-ray absorption spectroscopy verifies that the doped Mn impurities occupy the Co sites and are with a valance close to +4. Impurity scattering by Mn is in the unitary limit that, however, does not lead to strong T-c suppression. This absence of the strong impurity effects on T-c is inconsistent with the simple picture of a sign-changing order parameter. Coexistence of the s-wave superconducting order parameter and the nodal one is proposed to reconcile all the existing experiments and has been implied by the specific heat experiments.Item type:Item, Intra- and intersite electronic excitations in multiferroic TbMnO(3) probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering(2010-09-27) ;Chen, J. M. ;Lee, J. M. ;Huang, S. W. ;Lu, K. T.Jeng, H. T.Mn 3d valence states and elementary electronic excitations in single-crystalline TbMnO(3) were probed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) (or resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy, RXES), polarized x-ray absorption spectra and ab initio electron-structure calculations. Polarized Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of TbMnO(3) crystals exhibit a significant anisotropy along three crystallographic directions, particularly for the white-line region. The 1s3p-RXES spectra obtained at the Mn K edge reveal that the quadrupolar Raman regime is restricted predominantly to below the pre-edge peak whereas the fluorescence regime starts from the first pre-edge peak of 1s -> 3d transitions, indicating a relatively delocalized character of unoccupied Mn 3d states. The additional K beta emission profile at energy loss similar to 62 eV is attributed to the off-site dipole Mn 1s-Mn' 3d and/or Mn 1s-Tb 5d transitions, originating from hybridization between Mn 4p states and neighboring Mn' 3d/Tb 5d states. The off-site dipole transition makes a considerable contribution to the pre-edge region of Mn K-edge spectrum. Three prominent RIXS features at similar to 2.9, 7, and 11 eV were observed. Based on GGA+U calculations, the 7 eV region corresponds to transitions from O 2p states to unoccupied minority Mn 3d states, whereas the 11 eV band is ascribed to transitions from the O 2p band to the empty Tb 5d band. The broad 2.9 eV band is attributed to the coexistence of on-site Mn 3d-Mn 3d and off-site Mn 3d-Mn' 3d transitions.Item type:Item, Intra- and intersite electronic excitations in multiferroic TbMnO3 probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering(2010-09-27) ;Chen, J. W. ;Huang, D. J. ;Okamoto, J. ;Mou, C. Y.Wu, W. B.Based on resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering, we report that LiCu(2)O(2) exhibits a large interchain coupling which suppresses quantum fluctuations along spin chains, and a quasi-2D short-range magnetic order prevails at temperatures above the magnetic transition. These observations unravel the fact that the ground state of LiCu(2)O(2) possesses long-range 2D-like incommensurate magnetic order rather than being a gapped spin liquid as expected from the nature of quantum spin-1/2 chains. In addition, the spin coupling along the c axis is found to be essential for inducing electric polarization.Item type:Item, Magnetic order of LiCu2O2 studied by resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering(2008-08-01) ;Huang, S. W. ;Huang, D. J. ;Okamoto, J. ;Wu, W. B.Chen, C. T.We present results of resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering measurements on single crystals of LiCu2O2 to address the magnetic order. LiCu2O2 exhibits a long-range magnetic order incommensurate with the lattice, and the modulation vector is (0.5, zeta, 0) in reciprocal lattice units with zeta similar to 0.174, depending upon the temperature. The spin-spin correlation length along the spin chain deduced from the width of momentum scan is larger than 2100 angstrom. The inter-chain correlation length that lies within the ab plane was discovered to be substantial, similar to 690 angstrom. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. W.Sekio, Y.We report the observation of multiferroic nanoregions in cupric oxide, CuO, by means of resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering. There exists an anomalous memory effect for the direction of the electric polarization in the commensurate-incommensurate magnetic transition that coincides with the ferroelectric transition. Scattering results, incorporated with simulations of diffuse scattering, lead us to propose a scenario that preserved spin handedness in the multiferroic nanoregions is responsible for this memory effect in the magnetically induced ferroelectric properties of CuO.Item type:Item, Orbital polarization of the unoccupied states in multiferroic LiCu(2)O(2)(2008-12-01) ;Chen, C. L. ;Yeh, K. W. ;Huang, D. J. ;Hsu, F. C.Lee, Y. C.Using measurements of polarization-dependent soft-x-ray absorption and band-structure calculations including the on-site Coulomb interaction, we investigated the symmetry of the intrinsic 3d holes in the low-dimensional quantum magnet LiCu(2)O(2) with edge-sharing spin chains. The Cu L-edge and O K-edge measurements with in-plane and out-of-plane E vectors of x ray reveal the orbital character of the valence states of Cu on different sites. The unoccupied 3d states of nominal Cu(2+) exhibit predominantly xy symmetry, whereas 3d holes of 3z(2)-r(2) symmetry reside on the nominal Cu(+) sites. Both the experimental observations and theoretical calculations agree on the hybridization of the O 2p and Cu 3d states above the Fermi level. The existence of 3d holes on Cu(+) enhances the interlayer magnetic coupling.Item type:Item, Orbital polarization of the unoccupied states in multiferroic LiCu2O2(2008-12-01) ;Chen, C. L. ;Yeh, K. W. ;Liu, Y. T. ;Lee, J. M. ;Chen, J. M.Lee, J. F.X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is performed to study changes in the electronic structures of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and charged ordered (CO) La1-xCaxMnO3 manganites with respect to temperature. The pre-edge features in O and Mn K-edge XAS spectra, which are highly sensitive to the local distortion of MnO6 octahedral, exhibit contrasting temperature dependence between CMR and CO samples. 'the seemingly counter-intuitive XAS temperature dependence can be reconciled in the context of polarons. These results help identify the most relevant orbital states associated with polarons and highlight the crucial role played by polarons in understanding the electronic structures of manganites.Item type:Item, Poly-Silicon Trap Position and Pass Voltage Effects on RTN Amplitude in a Vertical NAND Flash Cell String(2016-08) ;Chou, Y. L. ;Wang, Tahui ;Lin, Mercator ;Chang, Y. W.Liu, LenvisWe investigate the dependence of random telegraph noise (RTN) on a poly-silicon trap position in a 3D vertical channel and charge-trapping NAND flash cell string. We characterize RTN in read current of each cell of a string at different read and pass voltages. RTN characteristics resulting from a trap in a read cell or in a pass cell are differentiated. A method to identify a poly-silicon trap position in a NAND string is proposed. We perform the 3D TCAD simulation to calculate channel electron density in a string. Measured RTN characteristics can be explained by current-path percolation and channel carrier screening effects. The distribution of RTN amplitudes in NAND strings is characterized.Item type:Item, Pressure-dependent electronic structures in multiferroic DyMnO(3): A combined lifetime-broadening-suppressed x-ray absorption spectroscopy and ab initio electronic structure study(2010-10-21) ;Chen, J. M. ;Lee, J. M. ;Chou, T. L. ;Chen, S. A.Huang, S. W.Variations in the electronic structure and structural distortion in multiferroic DyMnO(3) were probed by synchrotron x-ray diffraction, lifetime-broadening-suppressed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and ab initio electronic structure calculations. The refined x-ray diffraction data enabled an observation of a diminished local Jahn-Teller distortion of Mn sites within MnO(6) octahedra in DyMnO(3) on applying the hydrostatic pressure. The intensity of the white line in Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectra of DyMnO(3) progressively increased with the increasing pressure. With the increasing hydrostatic pressure, the absorption threshold of an Mn K-edge spectra of DyMnO(3) shifted toward a greater energy, whereas the pre-edge line slightly shifted to a smaller energy. We provide the spectral evidence for the pressure-induced bandwidth broadening for manganites. The intensity enhancement of the white line in Mn K-edge spectra is attributed to a diminished Jahn-Teller distortion of MnO(6) octahedra in compressed DyMnO(3). A comparison of the pressure-dependent XAS spectra with the ab initio electronic structure calculations and full calculations of multiple scattering using the code FDMNES shows the satisfactory agreement between experimental and calculated Mn K-edge spectra. M. ;Jeng, Horng-Tay ;Shao, YuChengWray, L. AndrewOxygen is known to play an important role in the multiferroicity of rare earth manganites; however, how this role changes with rare earth elements is still not fully understood. To address this question, we have used resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to study the F-type (0, tau, 0) diffraction peak from the antiferromagnetic order in DyMnO3 and TbMnO3. We focus on the measurements at O K edge of these two manganites, supplemented by the results at Mn L-2 and Dy M-5 edge of DyMnO3. We show that the electronic states of different elements are coupled more strongly in DyMnO3 than in TbMnO3, presumably due to the stronger lattice distortion and the tendency to develop E-type antiferromagnetism in the ferroelectric state that promote the orbital hybridization. We also show that the anomaly in the correlation length of (0, tau, 0) peak in DyMnO3 signifies the exchange interaction between Mn and rare earth spins. Our findings reveal the prominent role of oxygen orbitals in the multiferroicity of rare earth manganites and the distinct energetics between them.Item type:Item, Quasi-two-dimensional d-spin and p-hole ordering in the three-dimensional perovskite La(1/3)Sr(2/3)FeO(3)(2010-10-22) ;Okamoto, J. ;Huang, D. J. ;Chao, K. S. ;Huang, S. W.Hsu, C. -H.Measurements of resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering reveal anomalous ordering of 3d spins and 2p holes in perovskite La(1/3)Sr(2/3)FeO(3), which is known to exhibit three-dimensional (3D) charge and spin ordering along the (111) direction. Upon cooling, a quasi-two-dimensional phase consisting of ferromagnetic and charge-disproportionated [111] trilayers of Fe(3+)-Fe(5+)-Fe(3+) precedes the development of 3D magnetic ordering at the transition temperature, in sharp contrast to an ordinary transition from the paramagnetic and charge-uniform phase to the antiferromagnetic and charge-disproportionated phase expected according to conventional wisdom.Item type:Item, Quasi-two-dimensional d-spin and p-hole ordering in the three-dimensional perovskite La1/3Sr2/3FeO3(2010-10-22) ;Okamoto, J. ;Huang, D. M. ;Chen, C. K. ;Chou, T. L. ;Jarrige, I.Ishii, H.The Mn 3d valence states in single-crystalline TbMnO3 were probed using x-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES). The polarized Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectra show a strong polarization dependence, particularly for the white line region, indicating the strong anisotropic Mn-O bonding within the ab plane in TbMnO3. The RXES data obtained at the Mn K edge clearly reveal that unoccupied Mn 3d states exhibit a relatively delocalized character, stemming from hybridization of the Mn 3d states with the neighboring Mn 4p orbitals. The authors demonstrated that resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy is able to characterize the degree of localization of the unoccupied states or hole carriers in manganites.Item type:Item, Selective interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu spins in YBa2Cu3O7-x grown on top of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3(2015-11-17) ;Huang, S. W. ;Wray, L. Andrew ;Jeng, Horng-Tay ;Tra, V. T.Lee, J. M.Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between the in-plane Cu spins in YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) superconductor when it is grown on top of ferromagnetic La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) manganite layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such that it is only observed in bilayers with MnO2 but not with La0.7Ca0.3O interfacial termination. Such contrasting behaviors, we propose, are due to distinct energetic of CuO chain and CuO2 plane at the La0.7Ca0.3O and MnO2 terminated interfaces respectively, therefore influencing the transfer of spin-polarized electrons from manganite to cuprate differently. Our findings suggest that the superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers with proper interfacial engineering can be good candidates for searching the theorized Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in cuprates and studying the competing quantum orders in highly correlated electron systems.Item type:Item, Strong orbital polarization in orthorhombic DyMnO(3): A combined x-ray linear dichroism and ab initio electronic structure study(2010-05-15) ;Chen, J. M. ;Hu, Z. ;Jeng, H. T. ;Chin, Y. Y.Lee, J. M.We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the Mn 3d orbital occupation in orthorhombic DyMnO(3) single crystals. We have observed a very strong polarization dependence in the Mn L(2,3) x-ray absorption spectra, indicative for a distinct anisotropic orbital occupation. Ab initio electronic-structure calculations clearly infer the existence of a strong orbital polarization in the e(g) band with a staggered d(3x2-r2)/d(3y2-r2)-type ordering pattern in the ab plane. This finding is in excellent agreement with a quantitative analyis of the spectra using the atomic multiplet cluster approach.
