Item type:Item, Collision efficiencies of algae and kaolin in depth filter: The effect of surface properties of particles(1999-04-01) ;Huang, CP ;Pan, JRS ;Huang, SH ;環境工程研究所Institute of Environmental EngineeringColumn filtration experiments with 2 mm-Phi glass beads were conducted to investigate the behavior of colloids during filtration. Algae and kaolin were used as model particles, while the chemical system was altered by changing the electrolyte concentration and pH. The collision efficiencies from the interaction between colloids and the filter medium were calculated with a semi-empirical approach of the single sphere model and clean-bed filtration theory. The experimental results indicate that ionic strength enhance the removal efficiencies for both algae and kaolin particles significantly. The removal efficiency of the filter for algae decreased with the increase in pH for up to pH 6. No significant change was observed beyond pH 6. Removal efficiencies for kaolin decreased with an increase in pH. It is concluded that collision efficiencies are sensitive to ion strength and pH. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. The CMOS sensor was designed with N+/P-well structure and manufactured using a standard 0.5 mum CMOS process. The polymeric enzyme biochip was immobilized with uricase-peroxidase and used to fill the reacting medium with the sample. This study encompasses the cloning of the Bacillus subtilis uricase gene and expression in Escherichia coli, as well as the purification of uricase and measurement of its activity. The cloned uricase gene included an open reading frame of 1491 nucleotides that encodes a protein of approximately 55 kDa. The expression of the putative MBP-fusion protein involved approximately 98 kDa of the protein. The CMOS sensor response was stronger at a higher temperature range of 20-40degreesC, with optimal pH at 8.5. The calibration curve of purified uric acid was linear in the concentration range from 2.5 to 12.5 mg/dL. The results obtained for serum uric acid correlated quite closely with those obtained using the Beckman Synchron method. The correlation of the two important aspects of DL-content and services-can generate additional semantic relationships. This study proposes a content and service inference model (CSIM) to derive 15 relationships between content and services, and defines functions to manipulate these relationships. Adding the manipulation functions to query predicates facilitates the description of structural semantics of DL content. Moreover, in search for DL services, inferences concerning CSIM relationships can be made to reuse DL service components. Highly promising with experimental results demonstrates that CSIM outperforms the conventional keyword-based method in both content and service queries. Applying CSIM in DL significantly improves semantic queries and alleviates the administrative load when developing novel DL services such as DL query interface, library resource-planning and virtual union catalog system. Recently, Rodseth gave an elegant algebraic theorem for equivalent multi-loop networks. We show that its double-loop version yields equivalent networks of the 3-rectangle version. We also show that other seemingly different geometric recombinations also all turn out to be special cases of the 3-rectangle version.Item type:Item, When is individual testing optimal for nonadaptive group testing?(2001) ;Huang, SH ;Hwang, FK ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsThe combinatorial group testing problem is, assuming the existence of up to d defectives among n items, to identify the defectives by as few tests as possible. In this paper, we study the problem for what values of n, given d, individual testing is optimal in nonadaptive group testing. Let N (d) denote the largest n for fixed d for which individual testing is optimal. We will show that N (d) = (d + 1)(2) under a prevalent constraint in practical nonadaptive algorithms and prove that N (d) = (d + 1)(2) for d = 1, 2, 3, 4 without any constraint.
