Item type:Item, A comparative study of sustainability management education in China and the USA(2013-02-01) ;Huang, Shihping Kevin ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis study investigates differences between business schools in different institutional settings, using top-ranked Chinese and US business schools as the bases of analysis. To assess the divergent educational approaches, this study investigates the (1) number of sustainability-related courses per school, (2) design and arrangement of sustainability-related course curricula, (3) content of sustainability-related courses, and (4) teaching methods in sustainability-related courses, across differing institutional settings. The findings reveal differences in the curriculum designs of the two countries, which likely reflect differences in their local institutional settings and their interpretations of sustainability. This study offers several implications and recommendations for further research.Item type:Item, A systematic review of comparative studies of CO2 and erbium:YAG lasers in resurfacing facial rhytides (wrinkles)(2017-01-01) ;Chen, Kee-Hsin ;Tam, Ka-Wai ;Chen, I-fan ;Huang, Shihping KevinTzeng, Pei-ChuanBackground: Laser resurfacing is used to minimize wrinkles, solar scars and sequelae of acne. Objective: Purpose of the systematic review was to compare resurfacing outcomes of CO2 laser and erbium: yttrium aluminium garnet (erb:YAG) laser therapies. Materials and methods: Medline, Cochrane Library, EMBASE and Google Scholar databases were searched until 9 April 2015 using the following terms: laser, carbon dioxide/CO2, facial wrinkles, rhytides and erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet/erbium:YAG/Er:YAG. Two-armed controlled split faced studies that compared CO2 laser and erbium:YAG laser in patients with mild-to-moderate facial wrinkles or rhytides were included. Results: The pooled data in this study and findings of other studies support the greater efficacy with the CO2 laser in improving facial wrinkles, but the erb:YAG laser was associated with a better complication profile compared with the CO2 laser. Except one case of hypopigmentation, other complications (i.e., erythema, hyperpigmentation and crusting) and their rates were reported by studies examining both lasers. Conclusion: In general, the CO2 laser appeared to be more efficacious then the erb:YAG laser in treating facial wrinkles. Both lasers treatments were well tolerated.Item type:Item, Corporate social performance: why it matters? Case of Taiwan(2014-01-01) ;Huang, Shihping Kevin ;Yang, Chih-Lung ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyPurpose - The objective of this article is to explore the relationship between corporate social performance (CSP) and corporate financial performance (CFP) of firms in Taiwan, as the empirical evidence of Taiwan firms is scarce. Design/methodology/approach - This paper studies the empirical relation between CSP and CFP using a sample of 71 Taiwan-based companies during 2005-2011. CSP data are a composite of two Taiwan\'s CSP ratings, and CFP data are retrieved from Taiwan Economic Journal database. Two control variables, R&D investment (R&D) and industry type (IND), are included in our models. The multiple regression is used as a statistical analysis tool. Findings - Our findings indicate a significantly positive CSP-CFP relationship of firms in Taiwan. Furthermore, our study reveals that the CSP in the non-manufacturing sector is more highly related with CFP than the case in the manufacturing sector in Taiwan. Originality/value - First, Our findings are consistent with the majority of recent research and are supported by the stakeholder theory. The paper argues that Taiwan firms should incorporate CSP into their business strategies for improving their competitive advantages. Second, our findings argue that Taiwan firms in the manufacturing sector should learn the best CSP practices from firms in the non-manufacturing sector to maintain and enhance their sustainability. Third, this paper extends the subject study of Taiwan scenario, and it is the first paper combining two CSP local ratings as the proxy for the CSP measure.Item type:Item, Entrepreneurial orientation, learning orientation, and innovation in small and medium enterprises(2011) ;Huang, Shihping Kevin ;Wang, Yu-Lin ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityFrom the resource-based perspective, entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation are two separate but complementary strategic orientations that emphasize the business philosophy and behavior in proactively detecting industrial environment, including market information and competitors strategy, in order to innovate and respond to the customers needs timely. Empirical studies have separately discussed the variables of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation in relation to firm-level innovation performance. However, there is limited research simultaneously examined the direct effect of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation on innovation performance, especially individual-level innovation performance. Scholars have suggested that future research may examine strategic human resource practices to explore if organizational factors may enhance or diminish the entrepreneurial orientation on innovation. Both entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation still require organizational learning practices to facilitate higher-order learning and innovation. Although scholars are interested in figuring out if additional moderator variables simultaneously affect market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation on firm performance, limited empirical studies have existed. An organization with high degree of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation still require learning orientation mechanism to create an environment where mutually beneficial relationships between employees and their organizations to facilitate learning and innovation. Therefore, learning orientation may make an organization innovate effectively. As a result, the overall purpose of this study is to assess the influence learning orientation on relationships between entrepreneurial orientation, market orientation and individual-level job related performance variable, employee innovative behaviors.Item type:Item, Global logistics management curriculum: perspective from practitioners in Taiwan(2013) ;Wu, Yen-Chun Jim ;Huang, Shihping Kevin ;Goh, Mark ;Hsieh, Ying-Jiun科技管理研究所Purpose - This study attempts to list and rank the necessary skills required of a global logistics professional based on objective evaluations from industry. Design/methodology/approach - This paper adopts a novel mixed-methods approach using elements of concept mapping (brainstorming, multidimensional scaling, cluster analysis), and link analysis. Concept mapping through repeated brainstorming by industry practitioners helps to summarize the key skill required of an effective global logistician. The multidimensional scaling method and cluster analysis support the classification and weighting of the capabilities into nine clusters. Link analysis helps to evaluate the significance of the results and addresses the gap between industry and academic perceptions of the existing global logistics curriculum in Taiwan. Findings - In dealing with globalization, a logistician needs to be able to integrate, communicate, and analyze from an international perspective, perform financial analysis, maintain good industry and customer relations, exhibit strong people skills, stay healthy, and understand laws and regulations. Significant differences exist between industry practitioners and educators. The former believe that cross-functional marketing skills are critical and emphasize the importance of risk and financial management. In contrast, logistics educators consider the traditional logistics management skills, such as demand forecasting, sourcing, planning, and system integration, as key priorities. Research limitations/implications - There is room for research and theory on how to narrow the mismatch between the current logistics curricula in academia and practical requirements. Different pedagogical strategies and techniques can be further investigated to orchestrate an effective and balanced global logistics management course. One research limitation arises from the sample which is confined to Taiwan. Thus, the authors' findings may be constrained by local and cultural influences. Future research could extend to a large-scale multi-country data collection and analysis to reduce the possibility of cultural and context bias. Practical implications - Arming students with such important but diverse global logistics skills presents a challenge for logistics educators who need to find the right balance between breadth and depth of the modules. Educators and practitioners need to work closely together to co-design and adapt the logistics curricula for a rapidly changing global environment. This will help to shorten the last stage from the classroom to the workplace by keeping abreast of the changes in industry and produce relevant logisticians without compromising on rigour. Originality/value - The results provide a reference for educators keen on blending logistics education course design with practitioner inputs, to better develop global logistics capabilities. It also provides a reference to help prioritize what skills are important to be taught jointly in a module.Item type:Item, Lovastatin lowers the risk of breast cancer: a population-based study using logistic regression with a random effects model(2016-11-08) ;Murakami, Rimi ;Chen, Chiehfeng ;Lyu, Shu-Yu ;Lin, Ching-EnTzeng, Pei-ChuanBackground: Laboratory studies have demonstrated statin-induced apoptosis of cancer cells, including breast cancer cells, and evidence is accumulating on the mechanism of statin-induced apoptosis. However, despite numerous epidemiological studies, no consensus has been reached regarding the relationship between statin use and breast cancer risk. Methods: This retrospective case-control study enrolled 4332 breast cancer patients and 21,660 age-matched controls registered in the National Health Insurance program of Taiwan, which covers approximately 99% of the population. The study cases were women for whom a diagnosis of breast cancer (ICD-9-CM code 174. X) had been recorded in LHID2005 between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2010. A logistic regression model was adjusted for potential confounding factors, including the level of urbanization, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index was applied to assess potential comorbidities. We also considered possible bias caused by random urbanization, because nutrition and lifestyle factors are related to breast cancer incidence. Results: Our results showed that lovastatin was associated with a lower risk of breast cancer (adjusted OR 0.596; 95% CI 0.497-0.714; p < 0.001), and atorvastatin exhibited a protective tendency against breast cancer (adjusted OR 0.887; 95% CI 0.776-1.013; p < 0.077). Conclusions: Although no consensus has been established regarding the relationship between statin use and breast cancer risk, our study indicated that lovastatin is a potential chemopreventive agent against breast cancer. Further detailed research is warranted.Item type:Item, Making on-line logistics training sustainable through e-learning(2013-03-01) ;Wu, Yen-Chun Jim ;Huang, Shihping Kevin ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThe purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of using an online logistics certification learning environment as a training tool to equip future logisticians with required logistics skills. This study incorporates an online logistics certification website that was constructed for college students to familiarize themselves with the certification. In addition, this study also performed comparison tests on students before and after their interaction with the web-based learning environment system to ascertain the system's effectiveness. Our findings suggest that such a system might motivate students to familiarize themselves with logistics-related certification information and can enhance students' professional capabilities. In addition, the web-based learning environment might possibly motivate students to join logistics related industries in the future. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Policy makers rely on MAC to assess feasible strategies and related costs to achieve emission reduction goals. This paper introduces a variety of MAC methodologies, aiming at solving diverse problems, which utilizes various calculable-logic, thus producing different results and implications. This study applies a mind mapping method to capture differentiation of MAC methods, and systematically classify MAC methodologies. The applicability path analysis was proposed, based on principles such as stakeholder type, decision-making objectives, cost concept, strategy mode and information scope. Our goal is to assess the applicability of different methodologies, to reduce misuse by policy-makers, and to serve as a guide for subsequent research, which might prompt and lead to the derivation of more consequential results in future studies. The results of this study suggest that the complex method is not always better than the simplified method because policy-makers are required to select the appropriate method according to the type of information needed. It may even be suggested that MAC could be reliable by ranking relative-value of options compared with baseline, rather than focusing on the absolute value of individual measures. Opioid analgesics are commonly used to treat postoperative pain; however, these drugs are associated with a number of undesirable side effects. Objective This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture and acupuncture-related techniques in treating postoperative pain. Data Source MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases were searched until Sep 30, 2014. Study Eligibility Criteria Randomized controlled trials of adult subjects (>= 18 years) who had undergone surgery and who had received acupuncture, electroacupuncture, or acupoint electrical stimulation for managing acute post-operative pain were included. Results We found that patients treated with acupuncture or related techniques had less pain and used less opioid analgesics on Day 1 after surgery compared with those treated with control (P < 0.001). Sensitivity analysis using the leave-one-out approach indicated the findings are reliable and are not dependent on any one study. In addition, no publication bias was detected. Subgroup analysis indicated that conventional acupuncture and transcutaneous electric acupoint stimulation (TEAS) were associated with less postoperative pain one day following surgery than control treatment, while electroacupuncture was similar to control (P = 0.116). TEAS was associated with significantly greater reduction in opioid analgesic use on Day 1 post surgery than control (P < 0.001); however conventional acupuncture and electroacupuncture showed no benefit in reducing opioid analgesic use compared with control (P >= 0.142). Conclusion Our findings indicate that certain modes of acupuncture improved postoperative pain on the first day after surgery and reduced opioid use. Our findings support the use of acupuncture as adjuvant therapy in treating postoperative pain.Item type:Item, The emergence of the outsourcing market and product technological performance(2014-02-01) ;Huang, Shihping Kevin ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis study is a novel empirical endeavor to analyze the impact of market demand and product technological performance on the growth of industry's outsourcing activities. The sample is based on results from major ranking agencies between 2005 and 2010. A total of 661 firms were included in the sample with 392 observations in total. The results indicate that firms' CSR performance, as measured by the consistency of their CSR rankings, is associated with their CEOs' educational specializations in Master's-level business administration (MBA) and science (MSc). In addition, CEO tenure and gender are shown to affect firms' CSR performance. Furthermore, a firm's number of employees also has a significant relationship with its CSR performance. The results are encouraging for supporting universities' efforts to integrate CSR issues into their curricula. A growing body of literature has suggested that governments play a core role in promotion of green utilization. The extant research of green utilization behavior is focused primarily on consumer preferences. So far, in-depth quantitative research of the government's role in the connection between green utilization and production is absent. Unlike previous research of green utilization behavior, this study established a dynamic adjustment mechanism for the government's subsidy policy for electric vehicles through the case study of Taiwan's electric motorcycle, so that the government's finite budget can be effectively allocated. Results indicate that emerging energy technologies reach the market competition conditions of economies of scale through government subsidy, subsidy policies should gradually phase out the market and transfer finite budgets to other emerging energy technologies that need to break through economies of scale. Therefore, the incentives phase-out mechanism of the electric motorcycle in this study will be helpful in the decision-making thinking of government and quantitative evaluation for the promotion of emerging energy technologies in the future.
