Item type:Item, Direct observation of ferroelectric polarization-modulated band bending at oxide interfaces(2012-03-19) ;Huang, B. C. ;Chen, Y. T. ;Chiu, Y. P. ;Huang, Y. C.Yang, J. C.This study presents a direct visualization of the influences of ferroelectric polarization on the electronic properties of the Schottky contact at the Nb-SrTiO3/BiFeO3 hetero-interface using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S). The evolution of the local density of states across the Nb-SrTiO3/BiFeO3 interface reveals the interfacial band alignment and the characteristic quantities of the metal/ferroelectric contact. The unique combination of STM and STS in this study delivers an approach to obtain critical information on the interfacial electronic configurations of ferroelectric oxide interfaces and also their variation with ferroelectric polarization switching. R. ;Wang, Y. F. ;Chang, H. W. ;Huang, Y. C.Chen, J. L.An array of ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell nanowires (NW) for the highly efficient absorption of light and carrier collection is developed for use in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting. The oriented NW architecture favors physical matching, providing a direct electron conduction pathway and reducing the diffusion length of photogenerated holes. This work involves a combination of spectral imaging, spectromicroscopy and in situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy; spectra are obtained under operando conditions. Direct investigation of oriented nanowires using polarization-dependent x-ray spectromicroscopy enables the determination of the relationship between anisotropic electronic orbitals and charge carrier water-splitting efficiency. The results of O K-edge STXM demonstrated that the ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell NW exhibits strong anisotropy and thus provides higher electron-hole transport efficiency than bare ZnO. In situ XAS revealed that interfacial charge transfer between Fe 3d and Zn 4p states enhances the photoelectrochemical reaction in the ZnO/Fe2O3 core-shell NW. The photogenerated electrons of Fe2O3 are transferred from Fe 3d states to the Zn 4p state under photoelectrochemical conditions.Item type:Item, Optical properties of one- and two-dimensional excitons in m-plane ZnO/MgZnO multiple quantum wells(2016-03-09) ;Chen, H. R. ;Tsai, C. Y. ;Huang, Y. C. ;Kuo, C. C.Hsu, H. C.Five pairs of ZnO/Zn0.9Mg0.1O multiple quantum wells (MQWs) with fixed barrier thickness of 55 nm and three well widths of 4, 8 and 16 nm have been grown on m-plane sapphires by pulsed laser deposition. Due to 2D quantum confinement with decreasing well width, the emission of excitons bound to the basal-plane stacking faults, which are one-dimensionally confined in MQWs, encounters larger blue shift than that of the near-band edge excitons. Furthermore, remarkably reducing coupling of free excitons with A1 longitudinal optical phonons is closely correlated with increasing exciton binding energy but enhanced coupling of E-2-low phonons is a result of increasing interaction with the interface phonons with decreasing well width.
