Item type:Item, Hybrid L-band optical fiber amplifier module with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers and semiconductor optical amplifier(2004-08-01) ;Yeh, CH ;Lai, KH ;Huang, YJ ;Lee, CCChi, SWe propose and experimentally demonstrate a new hybrid three-stage L-band fiber amplifier module composed of a semiconductor optical amplifier and two erbium-doped fiber amplifiers over the gain bandwidth of 1540 to 1600 nm. This proposed amplifier also provides a broadband amplified spontaneous emission light source.Item type:Item, Identification of an HptB-mediated multi-step phosphorelay in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1(2006-03-01) ;Lin, CT ;Huang, YJ ;Chu, PH ;Hsu, JLHuang, CHWe herein demonstrate that the hybrid sensor PA1611 carries out specific signal transduction, through HptB (PA3345), to the response regulator PA3346 in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. As assessed by phenotypic changes in the hptB deletion mutant, the pathway is likely to be involved in the regulation of flagellar activity, the chemotaxis response, twitching motility, and biofilm formation in the bacteria. A systematic design strategy is developed for arbitrarily placing all SMC closed-loop poles. The speed control of a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft whose aerodynamic parameters vary considerably during flight is investigated. An outstanding output tracking performance and robustness against system parameter uncertainties and external disturbances are achieved.Item type:Item, The design and performance analysis for the multimedia function unit of the NSC-98 CPU(1997) ;Ueng, JF ;Wu, IC ;Kuo, YH ;Kao, LYChen, CLLeveraging Taiwan's hardware technologies, National Science Council in Taiwan proposed a project to design an advanced CPU, called NSC-98, compatible to the Intel MMX architecture. This paper discusses the design of multimedia extension, called MFU (Multimedia Function Unit), in this CPU. The MFU has the following two special features. (1) Support three more instructions for permutation operations, parallel distance operations, and parallel average operations; (2) implement two MFU subunits: one without the parallel multiplier and the other without the parallel shifter and converter (for permutation). This paper also does performance analysis by estimating the performances of the MFU with and without these features on some chosen multimedia benchmarks. These performance analysis results can justify our MFU design.Item type:Item, The study of adhesive forces between the type 3 fimbriae of Klebsiella pneumoniae and collagen-coated surfaces by using laser tweezers(2004) ;Chan, CH ;Fan, CC ;Huang, YJ ;Peng, HLHsu, LAdherence to host cells by a bacterial pathogen is a critical step for establishment of infection. It will contribute greatly to the understanding of bacterial pathogenesis by studying the biological force between a single pair of pathogen and host cell. In our experiment, we use a calibrated optical tweezers system to detach a single Klebsiella pneumoniae, the pathogen, from collagen, the host. By gradually increasing the laser power of the optical tweezers until the Klebsiella pneumoniae is detached from the collagen, we obtain the magnitude of the adhesive force between them. This happens when the adhesive force is barely equal to the trapping force provided by the optical tweezers at that specific laser power. This study is important because Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic pathogen which causes suppurative lesions, urinary and respiratory tract infections. It has been proved that type 3 fimbrial adhesin (mrkD) is strongly associated with the adherence of Klebsiella pneumoniae. Besides, four polymorphic mrkD alleles: namely, mrkDv1, v2, v3, and v4, are typed by using RFLP. In order to investigate the relationship between the structure and the function for each of these variants, DNA fragments encoding the major fimbrial proteins mrkA, mrkB, mrkC are expressed together with any of the four mrkD adhesins in E. coli JM 109. Our study shows that the E. coli strain carrying the mrkDv3 fimbriae has the strongest binding activity. This suggests that mrkDv3 is a key factor that enhances the adherence of Klebsiella Pneumoniae to human body.
