Item type:Item, A memory-efficient algorithm for multiple sequence alignment with constraints(2005-01-01) ;Lu, CL ;Huang, YP ;生物科技學系Department of Biological Science and TechnologyMotivation: Recently, the concept of the constrained sequence alignment was proposed to incorporate the knowledge of biologists about structures/functionalities/consensuses of their datasets into sequence alignment such that the user-specified residues/nucleotides are aligned together in the computed alignment. The currently developed programs use the so-called progressive approach to efficiently obtain a constrained alignment of several sequences. However, the kernels of these programs, the dynamic programming algorithms for computing an optimal constrained alignment between two sequences, run in O(gamman (2)) memory, where gamma is the number of the constraints and n is the maximum of the lengths of sequences. As a result, such a high memory requirement limits the overall programs to align short sequences only. Results: We adopt the divide-and-conquer approach to design a memory-efficient algorithm for computing an optimal constrained alignment between two sequences, which greatly reduces the memory requirement of the dynamic programming approaches at the expense of a small constant factor in CPU time. This new algorithm consumes only O(alphan) space, where alpha is the sum of the lengths of constraints and usually alpha < n in practical applications. Based on this algorithm, we have developed a memory-efficient tool for multiple sequence alignment with constraints.Item type:Item, Analyses and improvements of whiteness of reflective liquid crystal displays(2004-09-01) ;Huang, YP ;Chu, LS ;Shieh, HPD ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA reflective liquid crystal display (R-LCD) has become an important component of a portable information device; however, its inadequate whiteness appearance is a major issue in achieving the potential of "electronic paper". The factors causing inadequate whiteness were examined using a conventional R-LCD. Furthermore, a novel reflectance-profile-controlled component "random grating light control film" and a non dispersed LC mode with a high-cell-gap tolerance were presented to achieve the paper-white image of reflective LCDs.Item type:Item, Applications of microtube array on transtlective liquid crystal displays for backlight efficiency enhancement(2004-12-01) ;Yang, YS ;Huang, YP ;Shieh, HPD ;Tsai, MCTsai, CYA novel transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with a microtube array structure to make the most effective use of backlight was demonstrated. By redefining the area ratio of transmissive and reflective regions, high light efficiency in both transmissive and reflective subpixels can be attained. Based on the principle of light collection, a simulation model was established to characterize the features and optimize the microtube array structure. Furthermore, a typical TFT-LCD process was utilized to fabricate the optimized structure. A prototype microtube array was fabricated, and the measured enhancement of backlight utilization efficiency can be as high as a factor of 1.81.Item type:Item, Applications of multidirectional asymmetrical microlens-array light-control films on reflective liquid-crystal displays for image quality enhancement(2004-06-20) ;Huang, YP ;Shieh, HPD ;Wu, ST ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsThe multidirectional asymmetrical microlens-array light-control film (MAMA-LCF) is developed for enhancing the image brightness and contrast ratio of various reflective liquid-crystal displays. By use of index-matching material, the interface reflection is greatly reduced. Through optimized designs, the surface-scattering effect is also suppressed; thus the contrast ratio is much enhanced. From experimental results, the MAMA-LCF leads to a similar to1.5x gain in brightness over the MgO standard white and a 15:1 contrast ratio for the reflective color super-twist nematic liquid-crystal display, 2.8x MgO and a 23:1 contrast ratio for the polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal, and 2.8x MgO and a 13:1 contrast ratio for the cholesteric liquid-crystal display. Potential applications of this low-cost plastic thin film for reflective liquid-crystal displays are foreseeable. By redistributing the area ratio of transmissive and reflective regions, high light efficiency in both transmissive and reflective sub-pixels can be yielded. Based on the principle of light collecting, a simulation model was established to characterize the features and optimize micro-tube array structure. Furthermore, a typical TFT-LCD process was utilized to fabricate the optimized structure. A prototype of inicro-tube array was fabricated, and the measured enhancement of back-light utilization efficiency can be a factor of 1.81.Item type:Item, Multidirectional asymmetrical microlens array light control film for improved image in reflective color liquid crystal displays(2002-02-01) ;Huang, YP ;Chen, JJ ;Ko, FJ ;Shieh, HPD光電工程學系A multidirectional asymmetrical microlens array light control film (MAMA-LCF) which can direct light incident from multiple directions collectively for viewing is demonstrated in achieving much enhanced brightness in reflective color super twisted-nematic liquid crystal displays (STN-LCDs). The MAMA-LCF, constructed with an asymmetrical microlens array and laminated onto the front surface of reflective color STN-LCDs, can yield a maximum gain of about 5 x the MgO standard white in a typical viewing region without visible dispersion, moire or parallax effects.Item type:Item, Multidirectional asymmetrical microlens-array light control plastic films for high performance reflective liquid crystal displays(2002) ;Shieh, HPD ;Chiu, Y ;Huang, YP ;Ko, FJ光電工程學系Multidirectional asymmetrical microlens array light control films were developed to enhance image quality of reflective LCDs. Significant gain in both brightness and contrast ratio has been demonstrated without visible surface diffusion, Moire patterns and parallax.Item type:Item, MuSiC: a tool for multiple sequence alignment with constraints(2004-09-22) ;Tsai, YT ;Huang, YP ;Yu, CT ;Lu, CL生物科技學系MuSiC is a web server to perform the constrained alignment of a set of sequences, such that the user-specified residues/nucleotides are aligned with each other. The input of the MuSiC system consists of a set of protein/DNA/RNA sequences and a set of user-specified constraints, each with a fragment of residue/nucleotide that (approximately) appears in all input sequences. The output of MuSiC is a constrained multiple sequence alignment in which the fragments of the input sequences whose residues/nucleotides exhibit a given degree of similarity to a constraint are aligned together. The current MuSiC system is implemented in Java language and can be accessed via a simple web interface.Item type:Item, Single cell-gap transflective color TFT-LCD by using image-enhanced reflector(2003) ;Shieh, HPD ;Huang, YP ;Su, MJ ;Wu, ST光電工程學系By building an image-enhanced reflector above the transmissive region of liquid crystal cell, the transmissive light can follow the similar path with ambient light that both reflective and transmissive portions can achieve high optical efficiency, same response time and color saturation. Furthermore, only single retardation film is required in this transflective color TFT-LCD, and ambient light and backlight utilization ratio can be increase to 68% and 24% respectively. With image-enhanced reflector built in, a high image performance display under both bright and dark ambience can be accomplished.Item type:Item, Two-frequency C-V correction using five-element circuit model for high-k gate dielectric and ultrathin oxide(2006-05-01) ;Wu, WH ;Tsui, BY ;Huang, YP ;Hsieh, FCChen, MCA new circuit model of -five elements has been proposed for the two-frequency capacitance-voltage (C-V) correction of high-k gate dielectric and ultrathin oxide. This five-element circuit model considered the static and dynamic dielectric losses in a lossy MOS capacitor, the parasitic well/substrate resistance, and the series inductance in the cables and probing system. Each of the circuit elements could be easily extracted from the two-frequency C-V and static current-voltage (I-V) measurements if some criteria are well satisfied. In addition, this model can also be transformed into another two four-element circuit models to simplify the analysis and calculations, depending on the gate ea age current.
