Item type:Item, A combined electrochemical route to fabricate large-area and free-standing inverse opaline film(2016-07) ;Liao, Chen-Hong ;Hung, Pei-Sung ;Wu, Cheng-Yeou ;Chen, Hsin-YiWu, Pu-WeiA combined electrochemical route involving electrophoresis and electrodeposition is developed to fabricate a large-area unsupported nickel inverse opaline film with thickness less than 10 pm. A vertical electrophoresis allows for the packing of 495 nm polystyrene microspheres on an ITO-coated glass to form a colloidal crystal with significantly reduced defects. Subsequently, a nickel electrodeposition is employed to fill the interstitial voids among the close-packed polystyrene microspheres, followed by the removal of the colloidal template in a two-stage process, leaving a robust nickel skeleton with hexagonally arranged pores and interconnected pore channels. This nickel skeleton is then detached from the ITO-coated glass via a liquid nitrogen treatment, rendering a free-standing nickel inverse opaline film in 2 x 2 cm(2). Porometer measurements indicate a narrow pore size distribution consistent with images from scanning electron microscope. We determine that the intensity ratio of (111)/(100) diffraction peak is an indicator for the strength of the Ni inverse opals, and thus affects its structural integrity upon detachment from the ITO-coated glass. In this work, we proposed a novel strategy that combined with in situ electrophoresis and electrogelation of SF as well as the electropolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) for producing high-level nitrogen-doped (N-doped) carbons. A high beta-sheet content of SF can be synthesized in a three-dimensional (3D) inverse opaline skeleton via double-network microstructure (physical beta-sheet cross-linking and chemical PEDOT cross-linking) induced by the hydrophobic EDOTs. This synergistic effect regulating SF distribution and balancing the intra/intermoleeular hydrogen bonding among SF results in boosting beta-sheet contents. Herein, this 3D SF/PEDOT composite inverse opal (SPIO) exhibits a much ultrahigh-coneentrated beta-sheets (46.4%) compared to pure electrogelated SFIO with 16.4% of beta-sheets. After subsequent pyrolysis, a high-level (14.7%) N-doped pseudographitic carbon inverse opal is realized. For evaluation as a pseudocapacitor, this high-level N-doped pseudographitic carbon inverse opal shows a capacitance of 342 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1) and a commendable energy density of 31.7 Wh kg(-1) at an ultrahigh power density of 25009 W kg(-1) (at 50 A g(-1)). After galvanostatic charging/discharging at 15 A g(-1) for 10000 cycles, the sample maintains an impressive capacitance retention of 89.8%.Item type:Item, Combination of microspheres and sol-gel electrophoresis for the formation of large-area ordered macroporous SiO2(2017-12-01) ;Liao, Chen-Hong ;Hung, Pei-Sung ;Cheng, Yu ;Wu, Pu-Wei材料科學與工程學系A simple and effective fabrication scheme involving sequential electrophoretic depositions of polystyrene (PS) microspheres (500 nm and 1 mu m in diameter) and SiO2 sols (similar to 5 nm in diameter) to produce large-area ordered macroporous SiO2 inverse opals (2 x 2 cm(2)) on ITO substrates is demonstrated. The zeta potentials for PS microsphere suspension and SiO2 sols are measured to determine an optimized processing window in which both samples carry negative surface charges and sol-gel transformation can be properly implemented. Our approach entails the electrophoresis of PS microspheres to render a colloidal crystal with negligible defects. Afterward, SiO2 sols are infiltrated to the interstitial voids among the closely-packed PS microspheres via another electrophoresis process, followed by an oxidation treatment to remove the PS colloidal template and complete the densification of SiO2 gels. The resulting SiO2 inverse opals reveal impressive surface uniformity and structural integrity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms the complete removal of PS microspheres, leaving an intact SiO2 skeleton, whereas X-ray diffraction pattern indicates its amorphous nature.Item type:Item, Conformal Electrodeposition of Co-Ni to Improve the Mechanical Properties of Three-Dimensional Ordered Macroporous Ni Films(2020-01-22) ;Wang, Guang-Ren ;Hung, Pei-Sung ;Chang, Shou-Yi ;Yang, Jenn-MingTseng, Yuan-ChiehThree-dimensional ordered macroporous Ni films, known as Ni inverse opals, are fabricated via a template approach in which polystyrene (PS) microspheres (820 nm in diameter) are assembled in closely-packed colloidal crystals via a vertical electrophoresis process, followed by electroplating of Ni into the interstitial voids within the colloidal crystals and the selective removal of PS microspheres. To improve its mechanical strength, a conformal Ni-Co layer (45 similar to 64 nm) is electrodeposited on the skeletons of the Ni inverse opals by cyclic voltammetry. After coating, from nano-indentation tests, the hardness and reduced elastic modulus are enhanced considerably (172 similar to 220% for hardness; 72 similar to 79% for reduced elastic modulus), as compared to those of pristine inverse opals. After an annealing treatment for the interdiffusion of Ni and Co, the sample reveals an even stronger hardness. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the finite thickness of the inverse opals skeletons induces preferential growth of the (111) plane. In short, a combined effect of solid solution alloying, thickening of inverse opals skeletons for greater load bearing, and a predominant (111) plane is responsible for the improved mechanical strength of the Ni inverse opals. The nanostructured Ni foam is fabricated by a template approach in which colloidal crystals of polystyrene microspheres in 720 nm diameter are constructed by a vertical electrophoresis process, followed by electroplating of Ni to fill the interstitial voids among the closely-packed microspheres and removal of the colloidal template afterward. The formation of TiO2 overcoat is achieved by optimization of sol-gel synthesis to prepare desirable TiO2 sols and their subsequent electrophoresis toward the nanostructured Ni foam in a square wave pulsing mode. The thickness of the TiO2 deposit is proportional to the duration of pulsing electrophoresis. From nano-indentation, the TiO2 -coated nanostructured Ni foams exhibit notable improvements in hardness (53-68%) and reduced elastic modulus (26-37%) over those of pristine nanostructured Ni foams. This strategy of implementing a thin ceramic overcoat provides an effective mean to improve the mechanical properties of nanostructured metals.Item type:Item, Formation of Cu/MnOx composite film by concurrent electroplating and electrophoresis in an organic solvent(2018-08-30) ;Chiang, Wei-Shen ;Huang, Jun-Qian ;Tso, Kuang-Chih ;Hung, Pei-SungChen, Po-ChunA composite Cu/MnOx thin film was fabricated by conducting electroplating of Cu and electrophoresis of MnOx colloids simultaneously in an organic electrolyte. The organic electrolyte was prepared by dissolving copper (II) acetylacetonate and manganese (II) acetylacetonate in ethylene glycol, with addition of 10 vol% acetic acid to improve ionic conductivity. Since both Cu ions and MnOx colloids carry positive charges, the formation of a composite film was achieved by a pulse current mode in which a low current pulse was used for Cu2+ reduction, followed by a high current pulse for the electrophoresis of the MnOx colloids. The Cu/MnOx composite film was dense and its X-ray diffraction pattern revealed a mixture of Cu, Mn2O3, and Mn3O4. Both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy show consistent results confirming the metallic nature of Cu and oxidized state of Mn.Item type:Item, High throughput fabrication of large-area colloidal crystals via a two-stage electrophoretic deposition method(2019-09-10) ;Hung, Pei-Sung ;Liao, Chen-Hong ;Chou, Yu-Szu ;Wang, Guang-RenWang, Chuan-JyunAn effective and high-throughput method is demonstrated to produce a colloidal crystal with impressive crystallinity. The fabrication procedure involves a two-stage electrophoresis process in which a vertical electrophoretic deposition of polystyrene microspheres (495 nm) is conducted on an ITO substrate to form a colloidal crystal in size of 4 x 4 cm(2), followed by a horizontal electrophoresis to improve the packing crystallinity. Relevant parameters associated with the horizontal electrophoresis step including voltage polarity, bipolar voltage offset, and operation frequency are investigated. Their effects over the crystallinity of the colloidal crystals are verified quantitatively and qualitatively by structural observation via scanning electron microscope and optical reflectance spectra. We determine that the imposition of an alternately-changing bias of 80/0/-120/0 V at 10 Hz (25 ms in each bias) enables the production of colloidal crystals with the largest grain size (106 mm) and the smallest grain boundary (170 nm), as compared to samples prepared from a single vertical electrophoresis step. We attribute the improved crystallinity of the colloidal crystal to the bipolar bias that engenders localized movements of the microspheres, rendering them to pack more closely with reduced defects. Images from scanning electron microscope exhibit hierarchical structures with hexagonally-arranged pores and interconnected pore channels. For as-prepared and annealed ordered macroporous Ni foams, the loading-depth profiles from nano indentation show typical elastic and plastic deformation. Upon annealing, moderate growth in grain size is observed, resulting in lower hardness and Young's modulus. In contrast, for disordered macroporous Ni foam and solid Ni film, nano indentation results reveal larger hardness and undetermined Young's modulus. The ordered macroporous foam reveals hardness that is 22% of that of solid Ni film, a value close to its theoretic packing density of 24%. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. The synthesis begins with the preparation of monodispersive PS microspheres with a diameter of 490 nm, by a process of emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization, followed by a copolymerization process involving pyrrole and PyNH(2)monomers in a PS microsphere aqueous suspension, to produce uniform PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres with a diameter of 536 nm. The loading of 2 nm IrO(2)nanoparticles onto the PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres can be easily adjusted by tuning the pH value of the IrO(2)colloidal solution and the PS@PPyNH(2)suspension. At pH 4, we successfully obtain IrO2-decorated PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres via electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding simultaneously between the negatively-charged IrO(2)nanoparticles and the positively-charged PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres. These IrO2-decorated PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres exhibit a characteristic cyclic voltammetric profile, similar to that of an IrO(2)thin film. The charge storage capacity is 5.19 mA cm(-2), a value almost five times greater than that of PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres. In addition, these IrO2-decorated PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres exhibit excellent cell viability and biocompatibility.Item type:Item, Synthesis of polystyrene@polypyrrole-COOH@Ag (core@shell@shell) microspheres for potential application in anisotropic conductive paste(2020-03-15) ;Wang, Chuan-Jyun ;Hung, Pei-Sung ;Chou, Shih-Cheng ;Chung, Wei-AnWu, Pu-WeiWe demonstrate a fabrication scheme for the synthesis of conductive core-shell (core@shell) nanoparticles consisting of polystyrene (PS) microspheres in size of 613 nm with consecutive coatings of functionalized polypyrrole (PPy-COOH) and Ag. The PPy-COOH precursors undergo polymerization on PS microspheres forming PS@PPy-COOH microspheres, followed by sensitization and Ag electroless deposition to produce PS@PPy-COOH@Ag microspheres in size of 717 nm. The PPy-COOH serves as the adhesive for intimate bonding of PS and Ag. Images from scanning and transmission electron microscopes confirm a Ag coating of 41-50 nm which is consisted of clustered nanoparticles forming a mono-layered film. From X-ray diffraction pattern, the Ag adopts a polycrystalline fcc structure with grain size of 12 nm. Results from thermal gravimetric analysis indicate a Ag loading of 54 wt%. By four-point-probe, the bulk conductivity for PS@PPy-COOH@Ag is 10,170 S m(-1). These microspheres show promising potential for anisotropic conductive paste. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V.
