Item type:Item, Modeling and optimization of a plastic thermoforming process(2004) ;Yang, CY ;Hung, SW ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementThermoforming of plastic sheets has become an important process in industry because of their low cost and good formability. However there are some unsolved problems that confound the overall success of this technique. Nonuniform thickness distribution caused by inappropriate processing condition is one of them. In this study, results of experimentation were used to develop a process model for thermoforming process via a supervised learning back propagation neural network. An "inverse" neural network model was proposed to predict the optimum processing conditions. The network inputs included the thickness distribution at different positions of molded parts. The output of the processing parameters was obtained by neural computing. Good agreement was reached between the computed result by neural network and the experimental data. Optimum processing parameters can thus be obtained by using the neural network scheme we proposed. This provides significant advantages in terms of improved product quality.Item type:Item, Molecular dynamics simulation of the enhancement of cobra cardiotoxin and E6 protein binding on mixed self-assembled monolayer molecules(2006-02-28) ;Hung, SW ;Hwang, JK ;Tseng, F ;Chang, JMChen, CCMolecular dynamics simulations are performed on n-alkinethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and their mixture on a gold surface so that the orientations of the binding of cobra cardiotoxin and E6 protein molecules can be selected using the mixing, ratio of CH3-terminated SAMs with different chain lengths. The simulations suggest that a SAM surface with different mixing ratios may provide a possible platform for aligning protein molecules with a desired orientation and for enhancing the binding energy of the protein on the designed surface.Item type:Item, Optimising the thermoforming process of polymeric foams: an approach by using the Taguchi method and the utility concept(2004) ;Yang, C ;Hung, SW ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementThe use of the conventional Taguchi method for determining the optimum setting of controllable factors through off-line experiments focuses on products with a single quality characteristic or response. However, most products have several qualitative characteristics or responses of interest. The Taguchi method in itself optimises a single response or performance characteristic, yielding a set of process parameters. This particular setting, however, may not give the desired results for other characteristics of the product. There is a need to obtain a single optimum setting of process parameters that can be used to produce products with optimum or near optimum quality characteristics as a whole. Multi-characteristic response optimisation may be the solution to the above problem. In this report, a case study on thermoforming polypropylene foams, utilising a simplified multi-criterion methodology based on Taguchi's approach and utility concept, is discussed. Key processing factors affecting product quality are identified. It has been shown that the proposed Taguchi approach with the utility concept can provide an appropriate solution to yield a satisfactory product quality for a multi-response process optimisation problem.Item type:Item, Taiwan's dilemma across the strait - Lifting the ban on semiconductor investment in China(2003-07-01) ;Yang, CY ;Hung, SW ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementFor more than two decades, Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturers have been banned from investing in China. There was a heated debate in 2001-02 for several months over whether to lift the ban. The purpose of this study is to report the dilemma that the Taiwanese government faced during the debate, and the decision-making process of allowing Taiwanese integrated circuit foundries to invest in China.
