Item type:Item, Analyzing air cargo flows of international routes: an empirical study of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport(2011-07-01) ;Hwang, Cherng-Chwan ;Shiao, Guo-Chou ;運輸與物流管理系 註:原交通所+運管所Department of Transportation and Logistics ManagementAir cargo demand is an important aspect of the operation and planning of private and public agencies responsible for airports. While most existing studies in this field include only geo-economic characteristics of airports and their hinterlands as explanatory variables, this study develops a gravity model of air cargo flows by trying to incorporate more factors that might influence international air cargo flows of an airport. The model is developed based on the panel data of air cargo services on scheduled routes at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport during the years 2004-2007. The results indicate that population, air freight rate and three dummy variables, including the regional economic bloc of the "Chinese Circle"(an informal partnership between Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and mainland China), the Open Sky Agreements and long established colonial links, are key determinants of international air cargo flows from/to Taiwan. These results suggest a wider array of factors needs to be considered in policy. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Through a two-stage, Nash best-response game, equilibria in the air transportation industry are searched to evaluate individual airline's profit. First, airlines choose whether or not to enter a market and second, they attempt to optimize profits through choice of service frequencies, aircraft sizes and airfreight rate, given the decisions of others. Taipei-Hong Kong and Taipei-Los Angeles route markets are selected as the empirical cases of model application. The examples indicate that combination airlines have competitive advantages in the markets and the equilibria in the markets may change due to the changes of air cargo demand in the market, air passenger travel demand, the operation scale of all-cargo carriers and the availability of time slots at the airports for all-cargo operators. Estimation results show that the BGOP model performs better than the conventional bivariate ordered probit (BOP) model in terms of goodness-of-fit indices and prediction accuracy and provides a better approach to identify the factors contributing to different severity levels. According to estimated parameters in latent propensity functions and elasticity effects, several key risk factors are identified driver type (age >65), vehicle type (motorcycle), violation type (alcohol use), intersection type (three-leg and multiple-leg), collision type (rear ended), and lighting conditions (night and night without illumination). Corresponding countermeasures for these risk factors are proposed. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
