An asynchronous rational harmonic mode-locked fiber laser (ARHML) is demonstrated experimentally. Through the asynchronous mode-locking mechanism, the output pulse train has a wider optical spectrum and very uniform amplitudes with the un-wanted harmonic frequency components highly suppressed. Based on the laser dynamics of asynchronous mode-locking, we have developed a new method for in-situ determining the effective modulation strength in asynchronous rational harmonic mode-locked Er-doped fiber lasers up to 33 GHz repetition rate.

We have experimentally demonstrated a self-starting mode-locked fiber laser source operating at 1503 nm with 9 nm output bandwidth. The mode-locked laser works stably with a pumping threshold of 225 mW at 980 nm.
