Item type:Item, 1-Bit High Accuracy Carrier Phase Discriminators(2013-01-01) ;Chang, Chieh-Fu ;Yang, Ru-Muh ;Kao, Ming-Seng ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringAsymptotic derivation of traditional 1-bit arctangent phase discriminator (APD) is derived, even though neighboring quantized samples are dependent. The results reveal that high accuracy can be achieved by an APD in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) applications using sufficient samples. For high-SNR applications a novel phase discriminator called noise-balanced digital phase discriminator (NB-DPD), which has a complementary asymptotic performance of APD, is proposed to achieve high accuracy. The threshold SNR 2.6 dB that is suggested to identify either APD or NB-DPD is adopted in a specific application. Finally the sampling, quantization, and environmental noise effects on convergence of the asymptotic performance are discussed, and the simulations are provided to verify the analytical results.Item type:Item, A copy protection technique using multi-level error coding(2006) ;Liao, Chen-Yin ;Yeh, Jen-Wei ;Kao, Ming-Seng ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringA novel copy protection scheme for optical disks is proposed. Three error mechanisms - error insertion, error correction and error propagation - are included in the proposed scheme, which lead to a sharp cutoff in the detection probability of an encryption key. This cutoff behavior could be employed to effectively prevent bit-by-bit copying of optical disks. The proposed scheme can be easily implemented in common players, being a simple and effective copy protection technique.Item type:Item, A Delta-Star-Based Multipoint Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor Network(2011-04-01) ;Kuo, Shu-Tsung ;Peng, Peng-Chun ;Sun, Jen-Wei ;Kao, Ming-Seng電機工程學系This work presents a novel delta-star architecture for large-scale multipoint fiber sensor networks with enhanced reconfigurable functionality. Unlike conventional star networks, the proposed network is divided into several delta regions, each containing only one feeder fiber. This delta-star structure significantly reduces the complexity and implementation cost of conventional star networks. A concatenated dual-ring structure with the self-healing function is designed to overcome the star's weakness in reliability. Numerous sensor ring subnets (SRSNs) are utilized to serve a large number of fiber Bragg grating sensors. Delta regions are partitioned upon the criterion of inter-region traffic uniformization; this simplifies the interrogation process and time slot assignment. The reconfigurable function for this multipoint sensor network, which is based on the optical switching technique, is utilized to ensure service continuity when fibers fail. The protection mechanism is illustrated with several multiple link failure cases. Finally, an experimental network is implemented to demonstrate the feasibility and survivability of the proposed sensor network.Item type:Item, A HYBRID STAR-RING-BUS ARCHITECTURE FOR WDM METROPOLITAN-REGIONAL ACCESS NETWORKS(2011-01-01) ;Kuo, Shu-Tsung ;Kao, Ming-Seng ;Peng, Peng-Chun ;電機工程學系Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringThis work proposes a highly reliable hybrid star ring bus architecture (SRBA) for broadband wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) regional access networks A delta slat network on the top level acts as high capacity Punk infrastructure whose weakness in reliability is overcome by the self healing function of the concatenated ring item ark on the lower level The ling network is divided into several delta regions where the traffic load inside each region is unified to minimize the backup resources required in the network On the bottom loci considerable bus subnets are constructed to serve end users The idea of A bands is introduced to efficiently manage wavelength carriers used in the network Moreover by means of the automatic protection switching (APS) systems in all the optical network units (ONUs) a minimum hop rerouting protection scheme against fiber failure(s) is designed Specifically is e cam out an experimental network to demonstrate the feasibility and survivability of the proposed architecture (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals Inc Microwave Opt Technol Lett 53 102-108 2011 View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary com DOI 10 1002/mop 25628Item type:Item, An Approach Attaining Adjustable Designated Footprint(2009) ;Hsieh, Wan-Hsin ;Chang, Chieh-Fu ;Kao, Ming-Seng ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityIn satellite communications, the footprint is characterized by contour lines with specific receiving power When data is delivered to the area within a specific footprint, called the designated footprint, illegal users outside the boundary of designated footprint (BDF) can still receive the signal with degraded power. In other words, illegal users can obtain the transmitted data with higher error probability. In this paper, we present a special two-stage serially concatenated (2-SC) coding scheme to more precisely define the designated footprint. Hence users outside the BDF are excluded from obtaining the data, i.e. they cannot correctly decode the data. The key technique, 2-SC coding scheme, achieves the brick-wall effect in error performance regarding bit energy-to-noise density ratio (E(b) / N(0)). The brick-wall effect has sharp cutoff at a critical E(b) / N(0). When the transmitted data is protected by the 2-SC coding scheme, only the users within the designated footprint can successfully decode the data. Otherwise, for users outside the BDF with received E(b) / N(0) slightly less than critical E(b) / N(0), even if the coding structure is known, they cannot correctly decode the data. Thus the BDF is sharply defined by the critical E(b) / N(0). Moreover, by means of purposely-introduced error in the codewords, we can adjust the critical E(b) / N(0) and the BDF. We provide comprehensive analysis of the coding performance and further discuss the application of the proposed scheme to enhance secure satellite communications.(12)Item type:Item, Design and analysis of a conceptual wavelength-division multiplexing optical network based on self-similarity(2010-02-01) ;Kuo, Shu-Tsung ;Kao, Ming-Seng ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringWe propose a novel multilevel wavelength-division multiplexing optical network based on the concept of self-similarity to simplify network structure and operation. Our approach lies on a simple network topology as well as an efficient wavelength management scheme being uniformly applied to all network levels. The proposed network is a compound packet-switched and wavelength-routed network with packet switching performed on the bottom level and wavelength routing on all upper levels. This network retains the efficiency of packet-switched networks and the simplicity of wavelength-routed networks. Switching operations are concentrated at some special nodes in the multilevel network, significantly simplifying the node configuration and wavelength routing. Moreover, the idea of X bands is applied to unify wavelength management on all network levels. Network analysis is performed to assess the feasibility of our approach. A queueing model using the quality of service enhanced optical burst switching protocol is employed to analyze the blocking performance of the proposed network. Also, the numerical results based on the queueing model are provided. (C) 2010 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. By employing complex phasors, the PCA requires only complex additions in the order of N, the length of the sequence, whereas the conventional method using fast Fourier transform (FFT) requires complex multiplications and additions both in the order of N log(2)N. To combat noise, the input and local sequences are partitioned and mapped into complex phasors in PCA. The phase differences between pairs of input and local phasors are used for acquisition; thus, complex multiplications are avoided. For more noise-robustness capability, the multilayer PCA is developed to extract the code phase step-by-step. The significant reduction of computational loads makes the PCA an attractive method, especially when the sequence length of N is extremely large, which becomes intractable for the FFT-based acquisition.Item type:Item, High-accuracy carrier phase discriminator in one-bit quantized software-defined receivers(2008) ;Chang, Chieh-Fu ;Kao, Ming-Seng ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringIn this letter, a novel phase discriminator called digital phase discriminator (DPD) is proposed for 1-bit analog-to-digital-conversion (ADC) software-defined receivers. Using fewer computations, the DPD achieves higher accuracy than that of the typical arctangent phase discriminator (APD). The improvement is up to several orders when the sampling frequency keeps increasing since the accuracy of APD is bounded mainly due to quantization loss. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach and the critical uniformity condition is verified.Item type:Item, SNR-Aided Accurate Phase Estimation in 1-Bit Software-Defined Receiver(2012-04-01) ;Hsieh, Wan-Hsin ;Chang, Chieh-Fu ;Kao, Ming-Seng ;電子物理學系Department of ElectrophysicsThis work investigates the high-accuracy phase discriminator in 1-bit software-defined receiver (SDR) for three signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ranges: low SNR, high SNR and moderate SNR. Unlike traditional approaches, our approach first distinguishes which SNR range an application falls into, and this SNR information is then utilized to select a proper phase discriminator to achieve high accuracy. For low-SNR applications, traditional arctangent phase discriminator (APD) is adopted and the analysis of asymptotic performance is derived. For high-SNR applications, the noise-balanced digital phase discriminator (NB-DPD) is adopted to improve accuracy [1]. Between them, for moderate-SNR applications, a novel SNR-aided phase discriminator (SNRaPD) is proposed. The analytical and simulation results verify the superiority of the proposed approach for applications in different SNR ranges. The determination of moderate SNR range is critical and discussed finally.
