Item type:Item, A new ladder-type benzodi(cyclopentadithiophene)-based donor-acceptor polymer and a modified hole-collecting PEDOT: PSS layer to achieve tandem solar cells with an open-circuit voltage of 1.62 V(2013) ;Chen, Yung-Lung ;Kao, Wei-Shun ;Tsai, Che-En ;Lai, Yu-YingCheng, Yen-JuWe have developed a new ladder-type conjugated polymer PBDCPDT-FBT and a robust interconnecting layer (ICL) integrating a hole-collecting m-PEDOT:PSS layer with an electron-collecting ZnO layer. The inverted device using PBDCPDT-FBT exhibited a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.76% with a V-oc of 0.81 V, a J(sc) of 12.82 mA cm(-2), and a FF of 55.5%. The inverted tandem device incorporating the PBDCPDT-FBT and ICL achieves a V-oc of 1.62 V leading to a PCE of 7.08%.Item type:Item, A Pentacyclic Nitrogen-Bridged Thienyl-Phenylene-Thienyl Arene for Donor-Acceptor Copolymers: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications in Field-Effect Transistors and Polymer Solar Cells(2012-09-01) ;Tseng, Cheng-An ;Wu, Jhong-Sian ;Lin, Tai-Yen ;Kao, Wei-ShunWu, Cheng-EnA pentacyclic benzodipyrrolothiophene (BDPT) unit, in which two outer thiophene rings are covalently fastened with the central phenylene ring by nitrogen bridges, was synthesized. The two pyrrole units embedded in BDPT were constructed by using one-pot palladium-catalyzed amination. The coplanar stannylated Sn-BDPT building block was copolymerized with electron-deficient thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD), benzothiadiazole (BT), and dithienyl-diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) acceptors by Stille polymerization. The bridging nitrogen atoms make the BDPT motif highly electron-abundant and structurally coplanar, which allows for tailoring the optical and electronic properties of the resultant polymers. Strong photoinduced charge-transfer with significant band-broadening in the solid state and relatively higher oxidation potential are characteristic of the BDPT-based polymers. Poly(benzodipyrrolothiophene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PBDPTBT) achieved the highest field-effect hole mobility of up to 0.02 cm2?V-1?s-1. The photovoltaic device using the PBDPTBT/PC71BM blend (1:3, w/w) exhibited a Voc of 0.6 V, a Jsc of 10.34 mA?cm-2, and a FF of 50?%, leading to a decent PCE of 3.08?%. Encouragingly, the device incorporating poly(benzodipyrrolothiophene-alt-thienopyrrolodione) (PBDPTTPD)/PC71BM (1:3, w/w) composite delivered a highest PCE of 3.72?%. The enhanced performance arises from the lower-lying HOMO value of PBDPTTPD to yield a higher Voc of 0.72 V.Item type:Item, Alternating Copolymers Incorporating Cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b ']dithiophene Unit and Organic Dyes for Photovoltaic Applications(2011-04-15) ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Hung, Lung-Chang ;Cao, Fong-Yi ;Kao, Wei-ShunChang, Chih-YuWe have synthesized six p-type copolymers, CPDT-co-TPADCN, CPDT-co-TPADTA, CPDT-co-TPATCN, CPDT-coDFADCN, CPDT-co-DFADTA, and CPDT-co-DFATCN, consisting of a cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene (CPDT) unit and an organic dye in an alternating arrangement. Triphenylamine (TPA) or difluorenylphenyl amine (DFA) units serve as the electron donors, whereas dicyanovinyl (DCN), 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid, or tricyanovinyl (TCN) units act as the electron acceptors in the dyes. The target polymers were prepared via Stille coupling, followed by postfunctionalization to introduce the electron acceptors to the side chains. Because of the strongest withdrawing ability of TCN acceptor to induce efficient intramolecular charge transfer, CPDT-co-TPATCN and CPDT-co-DFATCN exhibit the broader absorption spectra covering from 400 to 900 nm and the narrower optical band gaps of 1.34 eV. However, the CPDT-co-TPATCN:PC(71)BM and CPDT-co-DFATCN:PC(71)BM based solar cells showed the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 0.22 and 0.31%, respectively, due to the inefficient exciton dissociation. The DFA-based polymers possess deeper-lying HOMO energy levels than the TPA-based polymer analogues, leading to the higher V(oc) values and better efficiencies. The device based on CPDT-co-DFADTA:PC(71)BM blend achieved the best PCE of 1.38% with a V(oc) of 0.7 V, a J(sc) of 4.57 mA/cm(2), and a fill factor of 0.43. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 49:1791-1801, 2011Item type:Item, Carbazole-Based Ladder-Type Heptacylic Arene with Aliphatic Side Chains Leading to Enhanced Efficiency of Organic Photovoltaics(2011-05-10) ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Wu, Jhong-Sian ;Shih, Ping-I ;Chang, Chih-YuJwo, Pei-ChiBy utilizing Friedel-Crafts cyclization, we have successfully designed and synthesized a ladder-type heptacyclic carbazole-dicyclopentathiophene (CDCT-C8) unit in which two outer thiophene subunits are covalently fastened to the central 2,7-carbazole core. The nitrogen-directing effect of the carbazole unit facilitates the intrarnolecular cydization and thereby suppresses the acid-induced dehydration, allowing us to incorporate two octyl side chains on the cyclopentadiene rings in good chemical yield. The distannyl-CDCT-C8 building block was copolymerized with benzothiadiazole (BT), dithienylbenzothiadiazole (DTBT), dithienyldiketopyrrolopyrrole (DTDPP) and quinoxaline (QX) units by Stile polymerization to afford four alternating donor acceptor copolymers, PCDCTBT-C8, PCDCTDTBT-C8, PCDCTDTDPP-C8 and PCDCTQX-C8, respectively. The device based on the PCDCTBT-C8:PG7IBM (1:3 in wt%) blend exhibited a V(oc) of 0.74 V, a J(sc) of 10.3 mA/cm(2), a FF of 60%, delivering an impressive PCE of 4.6%. This value represents one of the best performances among carbazole-based conjugated polymers in the literatures. The corresponding PCDCTBT-C8 :PC(71)BM blend showed a high hole mobility of 1.2 x 10(-3) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), which is in good agreement with its high current density and fill factor. This improved performance is associated with the modification of the aliphatic side chains on the CDCT structure to optimize the interchain interactions for enhanced charge transporting. The devices based on PCDCTDTBT-C8, PCDCTDTDPP-C8 and PCDCTQX-C8 polymers also displayed promising efficiencies of 3.5%, 2.4%, and 1.8%, respectively.Item type:Item, Combination of Molecular, Morphological, and Interfacial Engineering to Achieve Highly Efficient and Stable Plastic Solar Cells(2012-01-24) ;Chang, Chih-Yu ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Hung, Shih-Hsiu ;Wu, Jhong-SianKao, Wei-ShunA flexible solar device showing exceptional air and mechanical stability is produced by simultaneously optimizing molecular structure, active layer morphology, and interface characteristics. The PFDCTBT-C8-based (see figure) devices with inverted architecture exhibited excellent power conversion efficiencies of 7.0% and 6.0% on glass and flexible substrates, respectively.Item type:Item, Di(4-methylphenyl)methano-C(60) Bis-Adduct for Efficient and Stable Organic Photovoltaics with Enhanced Open-Circuit Voltage(2011-09-13) ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Liao, Ming-Hung ;Chang, Chih-Yu ;Kao, Wei-ShunWu, Cheng-EnA new class of fullerene bis-adducts di(4-methyl-phenyl)methano-C(60) bis-adduct (DMPCBA), di(4-fluorophenyl)methano-C(60) bis-adduct (DFPCBA), and diphenylmethano-C(60) bis-adduct (DPCBA) were rationally designed and easily synthesized. Compared to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level of PC(61)BM (-3.95 eV), the double functionalization effectively raises the LUMO energy levels of these fullerene materials to ca. -3.85 eV, regardless of the substituent groups (CH(3)-, F-, and H-) at the para-position of the phenyl rings. This phenomenon suggests that the plane of the phenyl groups is preferentially parallel to the fullerene surface, leading to poor orbital interactions with C(60) and negligible electronic effect. Importantly, such geometry sterically protects and shields the core C(60) structure from severe intermolecular aggregation, rendering it intrinsically soluble, morphologically amorphous, and thermally stable. The device based on the P3HT:DMPCBA blend exhibited an open-circuit voltage (V(oc)) of 0.87 V, a short-circuit current density (J(sc)) of 9.05 mA/cm(2), and a fill factor (FF) of 65.5%, leading to a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.2%, which is superior to that of the P3HT:PC(61)BM-based device. Most significantly, the amorphous nature of DMPCBA effectively suppresses the thermal-driven aggregation and thus stabilizes the morphology of the P3HT:DMPCBA blend. Consequently, the device retained 80% of its original PCE value against thermal heating at 160 degrees C over 20 h.Item type:Item, Di(4-methylphenyl)methano-C-60 Bis-Adduct for Efficient and Stable Organic Photovoltaics with Enhanced Open-Circuit Voltage(2011-09-13) ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Liao, Ming-Hung ;Chang, Chih-Yu ;Kao, Wei-ShunWu, Cheng-EnA new class of fullerene bis-adducts di(4-methyl-phenyl)methano-C-60 bis-adduct (DMPCBA), di(4-fluorophenyl)methano-C-60 bis-adduct (DFPCBA), and diphenylmethano-C-60 bis-adduct (DPCBA) were rationally designed and easily synthesized. A device based on PDITTDTBT:PC71BM exhibited a high V-oc of 0.92 V with an impressive PCE of 5.8%, while a PDITTDTBT:DMPCBA-based device showed an extra high V-oc of 1.14 V.Item type:Item, Synthesis, Photophysical and Photovoltaic Properties of Conjugated Polymers Containing Fused Donor-Acceptor Dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole and Dithienopyrroloquinoxaline Arenes(2012-03-27) ;Cheng, Yen-Ju ;Ho, Yu-Ju ;Chen, Chiu-Hsiang ;Kao, Wei-ShunWu, Cheng-EnWe have developed two nitrogen-bridged pentacyclic donor-acceptor dithienopyrrolobenzothiadiazole (DTPBT) and dithienopyrroloquinoxaline (DTPQX) arenes where the two outer electron-rich thiophene moieties are covalently fastened with the central electron-deficient benzothiadiazole and quinoxaline cores by two nitrogen bridges. These rigid and coplanar DTPBT and DTPQX building blocks were copolymerized with fluorene (F), carbazole (C) and cyclopentadithiophene (CPDT) units via Suzuki or Stifle coupling polymerization to afford six new alternating copolymers PFDTPBT, PCDTPBT, PCPDTDTPBT, PFDTPQX, PCDTPQX and PCPDTDTPQX, respectively. The nitrogen bridges not only planarize the structure to induce stronger intermolecular pi-pi interaction but also play an important role in determining the electronic and photophysical properties of the polymers. The device based on PFDTPQX/PC71BM (1:4, w/w) exhibited a open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.72 V, a short-circuit current (J(sc)) of 8.62 mA/cm(2) and a FF of 0.55 leading to a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.40% due to the lower-lying HOMO energy level, and the highest hole-mobility of PFDTPQX
