Item type:Item, Adaptive-level memory caches on World Wide Web servers(2000-03-01) ;Chang, DW ;Ke, HR ;Chang, RC ;交大名義發表資訊工程學系Owing to the fast growth of World Wide Web (WWW), web traffic has become a major component of Internet traffics. Consequently, the reduction of document retrieval latency on WWW becomes more and more important. The latency can be reduced in two ways: reduction of network delay and improvement of web servers' throughput. Our research aims at improving a web server's throughput by keeping a memory cache in a web server's address space. In this paper, we focus on the design and implementation of a memory cache scheme. We propose a novel web cache management policy named the adaptive-level policy that either caches the whole file content or only a portion of it, according to the file size. The experimental results show three things. First, our memory cache is beneficial since, under our experimental workloads, the throughput improvement can achieve 32.7%. Second, our cache management policy is suitable for current web traffic. Third, with the increasing popularity of multimedia files, our policy will outperform others currently used in WWW. The first is a corpus-based approach using feature analysis. It brings up three new ideas: 1) to employ ranked position to emphasize the significance of sentence position, 2) to reshape word unit to achieve higher accuracy of keyword importance, and 3) to train a score function by the genetic algorithm for obtaining a suitable combination of feature weights. The second approach combines the ideas of latent semantic analysis and text relationship maps to interpret conceptual structures of a document. Both approaches are applied to Chinese text summarization. The two approaches were evaluated by using a data corpus composed of 100 articles about politics from New Taiwan Weekly, and when the compression ratio was 30%, average recalls of 52.0% and 45.6% were achieved respectively.Item type:Item, Comparison and combination of textual and visual features for interactive cross-language image retrieval(2005) ;Cheng, PC ;Yeh, JY ;Ke, HR ;Chien, BCYang, WPThis paper concentrates on the user-centered search task at ImageCLEF 2004. In this work, we combine both textual and visual features for cross-language image retrieval, and propose two interactive retrieval systems T_ICLEF and VCT_ICLEF. The first one incorporates a relevance feedback mechanism based on textual information while the second one combines textual and image information to help users find a target image. The experimental results show that VCT_ICLEF had a better performance in almost all cases. Overall, it helped users find the topic image within a fewer iterations with a maximum of 2 iterations saved. Our user survey also reported that a combination of textual and visual information is helpful to indicate to the system what a user really wanted in mind.Item type:Item, Enhancing semantic digital library query using a content and service inference model (CSIM)(2005-07-01) ;Huang, SH ;Ke, HR ;Yang, WP ;交大名義發表資訊工程學系Although digital library (DL) information is becoming increasingly annotated using metadata, semantic query with respect to the structure of metadata has seldom been addressed. The correlation of the two important aspects of DL-content and services-can generate additional semantic relationships. This study proposes a content and service inference model (CSIM) to derive 15 relationships between content and services, and defines functions to manipulate these relationships. Adding the manipulation functions to query predicates facilitates the description of structural semantics of DL content. Moreover, in search for DL services, inferences concerning CSIM relationships can be made to reuse DL service components. Highly promising with experimental results demonstrates that CSIM outperforms the conventional keyword-based method in both content and service queries. Applying CSIM in DL significantly improves semantic queries and alleviates the administrative load when developing novel DL services such as DL query interface, library resource-planning and virtual union catalog system. In this paper, we present a hierarchical feature-based volume morphing-algorithm, which leverages the idea of feature-element hierarchy to significantly improve morphing effects. A new type of feature element, the cylinder field, is also given to facilitate the task of feature specification and correspondence. Additionally, with a slight modification, the proposed algorithm can be applied to volume animation.Item type:Item, Resource sharing digital libraries: a case study of Taiwan's InfoSpring Digital Library Project(2000-09-01) ;Ke, HR ;Chang, RC ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityThe InfoSpring Digital Library Project conducted by National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) is a project to establish mirror sites in Taiwan for well-known reference databases and full-text electronic journals. The role of NCTU in this project is to provide the hardware (including servers and storage space) and network infrastructure, system maintenance and data update. By means of resource sharing, universities and industries in Taiwan can access the databases loaded in the InfoSpring Digital Library under certain subscription agreements. Realizing the importance of resource sharing, libraries in Taiwan have organized a consortium to decide which databases to be hosted in Taiwan and negotiate competitive prices with information providers. This paper presents the motivation, current status, experiences, and future directions of the InfoSpring Project and introduces the Taiwanese library consortium which it services. Such a mechanism is called selective dissemination of information (SDI). Describes the design and implementation of an SDI system with the ability of delivering real-time, personalized news articles. In addition to delivering English news, it delivers Chinese articles also. Focuses on the problems that other researches seldom address. First, discusses how to store and delete news articles efficiently, then describes the user model to let users specify their interests. Finally, presents an efficient method to embed the ability to deliver Chinese as well as English news articles in the system.Item type:Item, SMIRE: Similar medical image retrieval engine(2005) ;Cheng, PC ;Chien, BC ;Ke, HR ;Yang, WP資訊工程學系This paper aims at finding images that are similar to a medical image example query. We propose several image features based on wavelet coefficients, including color histogram, gray-spatial histogram, coherence moment, and gray correlogram, to facilitate the retrieval of similar medical images. The initial retrieval results are obtained via visual feature analysis. An automatic feedback mechanism that clusters visually and textually similar images among these initial results was also proposed to help refine the query. In the ImageCLEF 2004 evaluation, the experimental results show that our system is excellence in mean average precision.Item type:Item, Text summarization using a trainable summarizer and latent semantic analysis(2005-01-01) ;Yeh, JY ;Ke, HR ;Yang, WP ;Meng, IH資訊工程學系This paper proposes two approaches to address text summarization: modified corpus-based approach (MCBA) and LSA-based T.R.M. approach (LSA + T.R.M.). The first is a trainable summarizer, which takes into account several features, including position, positive keyword, negative keyword, centrality, and the resemblance to the title, to generate summaries. Two new ideas are exploited: (1) sentence positions are ranked to emphasize the significances of different sentence positions, and (2) the score function is trained by the genetic algorithm (GA) to obtain a suitable combination of feature weights. The second uses latent semantic analysis (LSA) to derive the semantic matrix of a document or a corpus and uses semantic sentence representation to construct a semantic text relationship map. We evaluate LSA + T.R.M. both with single documents and at the corpus level to investigate the competence of LSA in text summarization. The two novel approaches were measured at several compression rates on a data corpus composed of 100 political articles. When the compression rate was 30%, an average f-measure of 49% for MCBA, 52% for MCBA + GA, 44% and 40% for LSA + T.R.M. in single-document and corpus level were achieved respectively.
