Item type:Item, MMSE Channel Factorization for Near Maximum-Likelihood Detection of MIMO Signals(2008) ;Kuo, Chih-Cheng ;Sheen, Wern-Ho ;Hsiao, Chang-Lung ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThis paper investigates channel factorization-aided detection for MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) spatial multiplexing signals. In essence, this technique transforms, through channel factorization, the MIMO system into an equivalent one with a better-conditioned channel that is more suitable for low-complexity detection. The detected signal in the transform domain is then transformed back to the original domain and decision is made to the transmitted signal. Channel factorization-aided detector has recently become of great interest for MIMO systems because of its ability to cope with noise enhancement incurred by an ill-conditioned channel. Lattice-reduction-aided detector (LRAD) is such an example, where channel factorization is done with the Lenstra-Lenstra-Lovasz (LLL) or Seysen lattice-basis reduction algorithm. In this paper, a new minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based channel factorization is proposed. By minimizing mean square error in the transform domain, the proposed method can approach nearly to the performance of maximum likelihood detection and outperform the LLL factorization by up to 0.5dB, depending on the types of used low-complexity detectors and/or antennas numbers.Item type:Item, New Factorization Algorithms for Channel-Factorization Aided MMSE Receiver in MIMO Systems(2011-01-01) ;Kuo, Chih-Cheng ;Sheen, Wern-Ho ;Hsiao, Chang-Lung ;電機工程學系Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringChannel-factorization aided detector (CFAD) is one of the important low-complexity detectors used in multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) receivers. Through channel factorization, this method transforms the original MIMO system into an equivalent system with a better-conditioned channel where detection is performed with a low-complexity detector; the estimate is then transferred back to the original system to obtain the final decision. Traditionally, the channel factorization is done with the lattice reduction algorithms such as the Lenstra-Lenstra-Lovasz (LLL) and Seysen's algorithms with no consideration of the low-complexity detector used. In this paper, we propose a different approach: the channel factorization is designed specifically for the minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) detector that is a popular low-complexity detector in CFADs. Two new types of factorization algorithms are proposed. Type-I is LLL based, where the well-known DLLL-extended algorithm. the LLL algorithm working on the dual matrix of the extended channel matrix, is a member of this type but with a higher complexity. DLLL-extended is the best-performed factorization algorithm found in the literature, Type-II is greedy-search based where its members are differentiated with different algorithm's parameters. Type-II algorithms can provide around 0.5-1.0 dB gain over Type-I algorithms and have a fixed computational complexity which is advantageous in hardware implementation.Item type:Item, On the transmitter-based preprocessing for 2-D OFDM-CDMA forward-link systems over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels(2008-05-01) ;Kuo, Chih-Cheng ;Sheen, Wern-Ho ;Chang, Chung-Ju ;Hsiao, Chang Lung電信工程研究所Transmitter-based preprocessing is investigated for 2-D orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing code-division multiple-access (OFDM-CDMA) forward-link systems for improving performance and shifting signal processing complexity from a mobile unit to a base station. Preprocessing schemes that are based on zero forcing (ZF) with power normalization, minimum mean square error (MMSE), and ZF with multiuser water filling (ZF-MWF) criteria are jointly investigated with 2-D spreading pattern optimization and multiuser scheduling from an information-theoretic viewpoint. Numerical results show that 1) the performance of preprocessing is quite sensitive to the 2-D spreading pattern for SNRs of interest, for example, 20% degradation on the sum data rate is observed for MMSE preprocessing if the spreading pattern is not properly selected; 2) ZF-MWF may substantially outperform the other two criteria depending on the SNRs; and 3) multiuser scheduling provides a significant performance improvement on the system sum data rate.Item type:Item, Transmitter-Based Pre-Processing for OFDM-CDMA Forward-Link Systems with Two-Dimensional Spreading(2006) ;Kuo, Chih-Cheng ;Sheen, Wern Ho ;Chang, Chung-Ju ;Hsiao, Chang Lung電信工程研究所Transmitter-based signal pre-processing is investigated for the two-dimensional (2-D) OFDM-CDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, code division multiple access) forward link systems, aiming to increase the system sum-capacity and shift the signal processing complexity of a mobile unit to the base station. For the non-selective failing channels, the optimum pre-processing that achieves the maximum ergodic sum-capacity is obtained by applying the principle of multi-user water filling under the condition of zero multiple access interference (MAI). For the selective fading channels, on the other hand, three sub-optimum methods including ZF (zero-forcing) with power normalization, MMSE (minimum mean square error), and the newly proposed ZF with multi-user water filling are investigated under the constraint of total transmit power. Numerical results show that: (i) The new pre-processing outperforms the traditional other two in terms of achievable sum-capacity. (ii) 2-D spreading pattern should be adapted to the channel conditions so as to minimize MAI and thus maximize the sum-capacity. In this regard, 2-D spreading has advantage over the 1-D one. (iii) The fewer the users scheduled at a time, the higher the system capacity; a result obtained from exploiting the multi-user diversity.
