The new formulation provides a clearer picture. The real and imaginary parts of the perturbation field are expanded in different basis sets. Orthogonality relations are used to project out the soliton parameters. The new formulation also provides a general numerical approach to the calculation of detection noise. Numerical analyses of fiber ring gyros that use squeezed solitons are presented.Item type:Item, SIMPLE ANALYTICAL METHOD OF CAVITY DESIGN FOR ASTIGMATISM-COMPENSATED KERR-LENS MODE-LOCKED RING LASERS AND ITS APPLICATIONS(1995-03-01) ;LIN, KH ;LAI, YC ;HSIEH, WF ;交大名義發表光電工程學系An analytical method based on a renormalized q parameter for Gaussian-beam propagation and properly matched self-consistent complex q parameters is proposed to aid in the design of arbitrary-astigmatism-compensated Kerr-lens mode-locked ring cavity lasers. The q parameters throughout the ring cavity can be calculated by solution of an algebraically quadratic equation for an arbitrarily thick Kerr medium when the intracavity laser power is less than the self-trapping power. The Kerr-lens mode-locking strength at the curved mirror was calculated over the stable range. The results indicate that the astigmatism is best compensated so that the stable range of x and y directions have optimal overlapping. Although to maximize the hard-aperturing effect the curved mirror separation must be at the far edge of the stable range, pump and cavity field matching inside the Kerr medium is also necessary. In addition, the insertion of a vertical slit is more effective than insertion of a horizontal slit. A spiking phenomenon is found in the intracavity z scan curve, which can be observed only with thick Kerr materials and a high laser power.Item type:Item, SPATIOTEMPORAL SOLITARY PULSES IN GRADED-INDEX MATERIALS WITH KERR NONLINEARITY(1995-08-15) ;YU, SS ;CHIEN, CH ;LAI, YC ;WANG, YP光電工程學系We analyze spatio-temporal pulse propagation in graded-index Kerr materials with the variational method, and find that if the path of propagation provides negative group-velocity dispersion, stable solitary pulses exist for pulse energy smaller than a critical value, Spatial and temporal degrees of freedom cannot be analyzed separately due to their coupling through the Kerr nonlinarity. Our unified analysis not only elucidates the hidden coupling, but also clarifies relations between parameters of the solitary pulse. The analysis is verified by direct numerical simulation of the paraxial wave equation.Item type:Item, STABLE 4-DIMENSIONAL SOLITONS IN GRADED-INDEX MATERIALS WITH KERR NONLINEARITY(1994) ;LAI, YC ;CHIEN, CH ;WANG, JP ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsItem type:Item, STARTING DYNAMICS OF A CW PASSIVELY MODE-LOCKED PICOSECOND TI SAPPHIRE DDI LASER(1995-01-15) ;PU, NW ;SHIEH, JM ;LAI, YC ;PAN, CL交大名義發表We show that, for a cw passively mode-locked picosecond Ti:sapphire/DDI laser, the first autocorrelation trace with negligible cw background occurs at a delay time of 20 mus, or 1600 round trips from the first relaxation-oscillation peak. The trace suggests that the pulse consists of a primary pulse as short as 4.4 ps and of small secondary pulses that form a much wider pedestal of the trace, each containing almost-equal-to 50% of the photon energy. Nearly transform-limited almost-equal-to5-ps-wide Gaussian pulses were observed at a delay time of 40 mus. After 45 mus, the optical spectrum broadened considerably, and the time-bandwidth product increased to 4 in the steady state (after 60 mus).
