Item type:Item, 13% Efficiency Hybrid Organic/Silicon-Nanowire Heterojunction Solar Cell via Interface Engineering(2013-12-01) ;Yu, Peichen ;Tsai, Chia-Ying ;Chang, Jan-Kai ;Lai, Chih-ChungChen, Po-HanInterface carrier recombination currently hinders the performance of hybrid organic silicon heterojunction solar cells for high-efficiency low-cost photovoltaics. Here, we introduce an intermediate 1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane (TAP() layer into hybrid heterojunction solar cells based on silicon nanowires (SINWs) and conjugate polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The highest power conversion efficiency reaches a record 13.01%, which is largely ascribed to the modified organic surface morphology and suppressed saturation current that boost the open-circuit voltage and fill factor. We show that the insertion of TAP( increases the minority carrier lifetime because of an energy offset at the heterojunction interface. Furthermore, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy reveals that TAP( can effectively block the strong oxidation reaction occurring between PEDOT:PSS and silicon, which improves the device characteristics and assurances for reliability. These learnings point toward future directions for versatile interface engineering techniques for the attainment of highly efficient hybrid photovoltaics.Item type:Item, A solar-thermal energy harvesting scheme: enhanced heat capacity of molten HITEC salt mixed with Sn/SiOx core-shell nanoparticles(2014) ;Lai, Chih-Chung ;Chang, Wen-Chih ;Hu, Wen-Liang ;Wang, Zhiming M.Lu, Ming-ChangWe demonstrated enhanced solar-thermal storage by releasing the latent heat of Sn/SiOx core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a eutectic salt. The microstructures and chemical compositions of Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs were characterized. In situ heating XRD provides dynamic crystalline information about the Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs during cyclic heating processes. The latent heat of similar to 29 J g(-1) for Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs was measured, and 30% enhanced heat capacity was achieved from 1.57 to 2.03 J g (1) K (1) for the HITEC solar salt without and with, respectively, a mixture of 5% Sn/SiOx core-shell NPs. In addition, an endurance cycle test was performed to prove a stable operation in practical applications. The approach provides a method to enhance energy storage in solar-thermal power plants.Item type:Item, Highly Effective Field-Effect Mobility Amorphous InGaZnO TFT Mediated by Directional Silver Nanowire Arrays(2015-01-14) ;Liu, Hung-Chuan ;Lai, Yi-Chun ;Lai, Chih-Chung ;Wu, Bing-ShuZan, Hsiao-WenIn this work, we demonstrate sputtered amorphous indium-gallium-zinc oxide thin-film transistors (a-IGZO TFTs) with a record high effective field-effect mobility of 174 cm(2)/V s by incorporating silver nanowire (AgNW) arrays to channel electron transport. Compared to the reference counterpart without nanowires, the over 5-fold enhancement in the effective field-effect mobility exhibits clear dependence on the orientation as well as the surface coverage ratio of silver nanowires. Detailed material and device analyses reveal that during the room-temperature IGZO sputtering indium and oxygen diffuse into the nanowire matrix while the nanowire morphology and good contact between IGZO and nanowires are maintained. The unchanged morphology and good interfacial contact lead to high mobility and air-ambient-stable characteristics up to 3 months. Neither hysteresis nor degraded bias stress reliability is observed. The proposed AgNW-mediated a-IGZO TFTs are promising for development of large-scale, flexible, transparent electronics.Item type:Item, Non-antireflective Scheme for Efficiency Enhancement of Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 Nanotip Array Solar Cells(2013-08-01) ;Liao, Yu-Kuang ;Wang, Yi-Chung ;Yen, Yu-Ting ;Chen, Chia-HsiangHsieh, Dan-HuaWe present systematic works in characterization of CIGS nanotip arrays (CIGS NTRs). CIGS NTRs are obtained by a one-step ion-milling process by a direct-sputtering process of CIGS thin films (CIGS TF) without a postselenization process. At the surface of CIGS NTRs, a region extending to 100 nm in depth with a lower copper concentration compared to that of CIGS TF has been discovered. After KCN washing, removal of secondary phases can be achieved and a layer with abundant copper vacancy (V-Cu) was left. Such compositional changes can be a benefit for a CIGS solar cell by promoting formation of Cd-occupied Cu sites (Cd-Cu) at the CdS/CIGS interface and creates a type-inversion layer to enhance interface passivation and carrier extraction. The raised V-Cu concentration and enhanced Cd diffusion in CIGS NTRs have been verified by energy dispersive spectrometry. Strengthened adhesion of Al:ZnO (AZO) thin film on CIGS NTRs capped with CdS has also been observed in SEM images and can explain the suppressed series resistance of the device with CIGS NTRs. Those improvements in electrical characteristics are the main factors for efficiency enhancement rather than antireflection.Item type:Item, Tunable endothermic plateau for enhancing thermal energy storage obtained using binary metal alloy particles(2016-07) ;Lai, Chih-Chung ;Lin, Shih-Ming ;Chu, Yuan-Da ;Chang, Chun-CheChueh, Yu-LunThermal energy storage is crucial for various industrial systems. Enhancements in energy storage induced by latent heat have been demonstrated by using phase-change materials. However, these enhancements occur only at the melting points of the materials. In this study, we demonstrated the controllability of latent heat absorption/release in a certain temperature range. A wide endothermic plateau from 370 to 407 degrees C for the Hitec salt was obtained by releasing the latent heat of alloy particles embedded in the salt. The alloy particle-doped salt was applied to a Stirling engine to demonstrate its effectiveness in enhancing the energy and power outputs of the engine. Compared to pure salt, the alloy particle-doped salt can enhance the engine\'s energy output by 21%. With the advantages of scalable synthesis and superior thermal properties, the alloy particles have potential applications in energy storage enhancement in various thermal energy systems.
