Item type:Item, A comparisson of innovation capacity at science parks across the Taiwan strait: the case of Zhangjiang High-Tech Park and Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park(2005-07-01) ;Lai, HC ;Shyu, JZ ;科技管理研究所Institute of Management of TechnologyThis paper aims to explore the innovation capacity in two different science parks across the Taiwan Strait. In both Taiwan and China considerable resources are being devoted to science parks as policy instruments aimed at promoting R&D-based as well as innovation activities. For this study, we chose the Zhangjiang High-Tech Park (ZJHP) of China and the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (HSIP) of Taiwan to compare innovation capacity. Based on Porter's (The Competitive Advantage of Nations, Free Press, New York, 1990; Cluster and Competition: New Agendas for Companies, Governments, and Institutions, on Competition, Harvard Business School Press, Boston, MA, 1998; Econ. Develop. Quart. 14 (1990, 1998, 2000) 15) model for the innovation orientation of national industrial cluster, this paper proposes a model to analyze the science parks in innovation capacity across the Taiwan Strait. We found differences in determinants for innovation capacity between the ZJHP and HISP, such as the "basic research infrastructure", "sophisticated and demanding local customer base", and "the presence of clusters instead of isolated industries". In this paper, we constructed a rolling Grey forecasting model (RGM) to predict Taiwan's annual semiconductor production. The univariate Grey forecasting model (GM) makes forecast of a time series of data without considering possible correlation with any leading indicators. Interestingly, within the RGM there is a constant, P value, which was customarily set to 0.5. We hypothesized that making the P value a variable of time could generate more accurate forecasts. It was expected that the annual semiconductor production in Taiwan should be closely tied with U.S. demand. Hence, we let the P value be determined by the yearly percent change in real gross domestic product (GDP) by U.S. manufacturing industry. This variable P value RGM generated better forecasts than the fixed P value RGM. Nevertheless, the yearly percent change in real GDP by U.S. manufacturing industry is reported after a year ends. It cannot serve as a leading indicator for the same year's U.S. demand. We found out that the correlation between the yearly survey of anticipated industrial production growth rates in Taiwan and the yearly percent changes in real GDP by U.S. manufacturing industry has a correlation coefficient of 0.96. Therefore, we used the former to determine the P value in the RGM, which generated very accurate forecasts. (c) 2003 Elsevier Inc. This method can be applied to arbitrary combinations of polymers with no restriction on solvents. As an example, a hole-blocking layer is successfully spin coated on the common p-type emissive polymer layers. One green- and two blue-emitting polymers are chosen as the emissive layers. The electron-hole balance and efficiency are significantly improved by the addition of hole-blocking layer. The electroluminescence efficiency can be increased up to nine times, while the luminance up to seven times. In particular, 1.5 cd/A is obtained for deep blue emission from poly(9,9-dioctyl-fluorene) with 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene spin coated as the hole-blocking material. Obviously, the progression from HPV infection to cancer involves other environmental and host factors. Recent population-based twin and family studies have demonstrated the importance of the hereditary component of cervical cancer, associated with genetic susceptibility. Consequently, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and microsatellites should be considered genetic factors for determining what combinations of genetic factors are involved in precancerous changes to cervical cancer. This study employs a Bayesian network and four different decision tree algorithms, and compares the performance of these learning algorithms. The results of this study raise the possibility of investigations that could identify combinations of genetic factors, such as SNPs and microsatellites, that influence the risk associated with common complex multifactorial diseases, such as cervical cancer.Item type:Item, InAs/GaAs quantum-dot saturable absorber for a diode-pumped passively mode-locked Nd : YVO4 laser at 1342 nm(2005-06-15) ;Su, KW ;Lai, HC ;Li, A ;Chen, YFHuang, KEWe report that lnAs/GaAs quantum dots were developed to be saturable absorbers as well as output couplers in diode-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YVO4 lasers at 1342 nm. This is a critical subject that lacks sufficient analysis. Through years of investment and effort, several IT industrial clusters have developed in China with Shanghai, Kunshan, Shenzhen and Dongguan the better-known examples. These IT industrial clusters were chosen for an empirical study on the disparities in China's innovation capacity. All of the innovation capacity determinants at these four IT industrial clusters were different. It was confirmed that the regional dimension of Chinese economic policy affects firms' innovation capacity in the industrial cluster. The results also show whether the regional policy differences will moderate the cluster effect on innovation.Item type:Item, Observation of the wave function of a quantum billiard from the transverse patterns of vertical cavity surface emitting lasers(2002-11-25) ;Huang, KF ;Chen, YF ;Lai, HC ;Lan, YP電子物理學系We demonstrate experimentally that the near-field and far-field transverse patterns of a large aperture vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) can be successfully interpreted as a two-dimensional (2D) billiard system. It is found that the near-field and far-field transverse patterns of a large aperture VCSEL evidently represent the coordinate-space and momentum-space wave functions of a 2D quantum billiard, respectively. The result of this paper suggests that large aperture VCSELs are potentially appropriate physical systems for the wave-function study in quantum problems.Item type:Item, Observation of vector vortex lattices in polarization states of an isotropic microcavity laser(2003-02-07) ;Chen, YF ;Huang, KF ;Lai, HC ;Lan, YP電子物理學系We experimentally investigate the formation of a vector polarization pattern from an isotropic microcavity laser. It is found that the orthogonal components of the observed pattern are localized on the geometrical rays. The connection between eigenfunctions and geometrical rays is analytically constructed by using the SU(2) coherent states. With the analytical function form, the observed vector pattern is completely reconstructed and the vector vortex lattice is apparent.Item type:Item, Oxide-confined vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers pumped Nd : YVO4 microchip lasers(2002-03-01) ;Lan, YP ;Chen, YF ;Huang, KF ;Lai, HCPan, JSIn this letter, we demonstrate an experimental study of using a large area oxide-confined vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) to pump a Nd:YVO4 microchip laser. The maximum output power of 1.2 mW in TEM00 mode is obtained with a pump power of 8.2 mW. Experimental results show that the complex transverse modal behavior of VCSELs in the higher injection current may cause an impediment of power scaling.Item type:Item, Production forecasting of Taiwan's technology industrial cluster: A Bayesian autoregression approach(2005-06-01) ;Lee, JC ;Hsu, PH ;Wang, CH ;Lai, HC統計學研究所This study proposes a forecasting method that combines the clustering effect and non-informative diffiuse-prior Bayesian vector autoregression (NDBVAR) model to forecast the productions of technology industries. Two empirical cases are examined to verify the proposed method: the semiconductor industry and computer manufacturing industry in Taiwan. It is found that the NDBVAR model outperforms the other three conventional time series models including the autoregression (AR), vector autoregression (VAR), and Litterman Bayesian VAR (LBVAR) models. Moreover the NDBVAR model also outperforms the forecast reports from leading market information providers over the past several years. The forecasting method proposed is therefore concluded to be a feasible approach for production prediction, especially for technology, industries in volatile environments.Item type:Item, Rules of selection for spontaneous coherent states in mesoscopic systems: Using the microcavity laser as an analog study(2003-08-01) ;Chen, YF ;Huang, KF ;Lai, HC ;Lan, YP電子物理學系The selection rules for spontaneous coherent waves in mesoscopic systems are experimentally studied using the transverse patterns of a microcavity laser and theoretically analyzed using the theory of SU(2) coherent states. Comparison of the experimental results with the theoretical analyses reveals that an amplitude factor A should be included in the representation of the partially coherent states. The determination of the amplitude factor A is found to be associated with the constraint of minimum energy uncertainty.
