Item type:Item, Compact Tunable Laser With InGaAsP Photonic Crystal Nanorods for C-Band Communication(2015-11-01) ;Shih, Min-Hsiung ;Hsu, Kung-Shu ;Lee, Kevin ;Lai, Kun-TingLin, Chun-TingIn this study, an ultracompact tunable laser with InGaAsP photonic crystal nanorods for optical communication was demonstrated within 10-mu m footprint. The square photonic crystal nanorods with the InGaAsP quantum wells were fabricated and embedded in a flexible polydimethylsiloxane substrate. The high-quality single mode lasing with low threshold around the symmetry point Gamma was achieved in experiments. The lasing wavelength can be linearly fine-tuned by varying the extension percentage of photonic crystals and the wavelength tunable range covers the whole conventional band communication ambit. The lasing wavelength shift is attributed to the PhC lattice distortion, and its tuning behavior agrees with the 3-D simulation results. This ultrasmall, wide-range wavelength tunable laser can function as a novel light source for the chip-scale photonic integrated circuits and optics communication system.Item type:Item, Wavelength Fine-tuning Flexible Photonic Crystal Rods Laser(2012-01-01) ;Lai, Kun-Ting ;Kuo, Ming-Yen ;Hsu, Kung-Shu ;Lin, Chun-TingShih, Min-HsiungIn this study, a flexible photonic crystal laser was demonstrated with InGaAsP nano rods on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. The InGaAsP nano-rods content 4 quantum wells which are designed for 1.55 mu m communication wavelength. The lasing action was observed around 1550nm which is a band-edge emission at high-symmetry Gamma-point of photonic crystals. One of advantages of the flexible laser is the fine-tuning of optical properties by manipulating its geometry. In this work, we observed the lasing wavelength can be controlled by increasing photonic crystal lattice extension. The lasing wavelength was linearly red-shift up to 6 nm as the lattice extension percentage increased to 2.2%. The wavelength tuning rate is approximately 2.69 nm for 1 % lattice extension. Those geometric fine-tuning properties indicate the flexible photonic crystal laser can be applied as a compact tunable light source in photonic crystal integrated circuits or biomedical sensors.Item type:Item, Wide-angle polarization independent infrared broadband absorbers based on metallic multi-sized disk arrays(2012-04-23) ;Cheng, Cheng-Wen ;Abbas, Mohammed Nadhim ;Chiu, Chao-Wei ;Lai, Kun-TingShih, Min-HsiungTwo-dimensional metallic broadband absorbers on a SiO2/Ag/Si substrate were experimentally studied. The absorptivity of such structure can be increased by tailoring the ratio of disk size to the unit cell area. The metallic disk exhibits a localized surface plasmon polariton (LSPP) mode for both TE and TM polarizations. A broadband thermal emitter can be realized because the LSPP mode is independent of the periodicities. By manipulating the ratios and disk sizes, a high-performance, wide-angle, polarization-independent dual band absorber was experimentally achieved. The results demonstrated a substantial flexibility in absorber designs for applications in thermal photovoltaics, sensors, and camouflage. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America
