Item type:Item, An accurate confidence interval for the mean tourist expenditure under stratified random sampling(2014-10-01) ;Ding, Cherng G. ;Lee, Hsiu-Yu ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementIt is of interest to make an inference about the mean expenditure per tourist per day (or per stay). A simple approach to obtain an exact t test under stratified random sampling is proposed in this study. The underlying assumptions include given prior probabilities, normality within each stratum, and the equality of within-stratum variances. Procedure to make an exact inference has been provided and illustrated. The proposed approach is effective and recommended for the studies where stratified random sampling is conducted and inference for the mean expenditure is desirable.Item type:Item, An application of catastrophe theory on interpreting post-SARS arrival recovery patterns(2006) ;Mao, Chikuo ;Ding, Cherng G. ;Lee, Hsiu-Yu ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementIn 2003, many Asian countries suffered seriously from the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The outbreak of SARS caused a crisis in the tourism industry in many parts of Asia in that year. The purpose of this study is to examine and compare the post-SARS recovery patterns of inbound arrivals from Japan and Hong Kong in Taiwan. Taking catastrophe theory as its foundation, this study proposes a well-grounded approach to the understanding of the nature of the recovery processes and to the explanation of the difference between the recovery patterns displayed by arrivals from Japan and arrivals from Hong Kong. This study successfully demonstrates a method of applying cusp catastrophe theory to problems that can be: (1) defined by two continuous independent control variables and one discrete dependent (system state) variable, and (2) characterized by sudden system state change behavior, namely the continuous quantitative change of the control variables, causing a discontinuous qualitative change of the state variable. Implications regarding tourism promotion policies are drawn from the analysis.Item type:Item, Post-SARS tourist arrival recovery patterns: An analysis based on a catastrophe theory(2010-12-01) ;Mao, Chi-Kuo ;Ding, Cherng G. ;Lee, Hsiu-Yu ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementIn 2003, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) ravaged many Asian countries. The outbreak of SARS caused a crisis in the tourism industry in many parts of Asia in that year. The purpose of this study is to examine and to compare the post-SARS recovery patterns of inbound arrivals from Japan, Hong Kong and USA in Taiwan. Taking the cusp catastrophe model as its foundation, this study proposes a well-grounded approach to understanding the nature of the recovery processes and to explaining the difference between the recovery patterns displayed by arrivals from Japan and those from Hong Kong and USA. Implications regarding tourism promotion policies are drawn from the analysis. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
