Item type:Item, Development of SSVEP-based BCI using Common Frequency Pattern to Enhance System Performance(2014) ;Ko, Li-Wei ;Lin, Shih-Chuan ;Liang, Wei-Gang ;Komarov, OleksiiSong, Meng-ShueBrain Computer Interface(BCI) systems provide an additional way for people to interact with external environment without using peripheral nerves or muscles[1]. In a variety of BCI systems, a BCI system based on the steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) is one most common system known for application, because of its ease of use and good performance with little user training. In this study, the common frequency pattern method (CFP) is used to improve the accuracy of our EEG-based SSVEP BCI system. There are four basic classifiers (SVM, KNNC, PARZENDC, LDC) in this paper to estimate the accuracy of our SSVEP system. Without using CFP, the highest accuracy of the EEG-based SSVEP system was 80%. By using CFP, the accuracy could be upgraded to 95%.Item type:Item, Eyeblink recognition improves fatigue prediction from single-channel forehead EEG in a realistic sustained attention task(2020-06-01) ;Ko, Li-Wei ;Komarov, Oleksii ;Lai, Wei-Kai ;Liang, Wei-GangJung, Tzyy-PingObjective. A passive brain-computer interface recognizes its operator's cognitive state without an explicitly performed control task. This technique is commonly used in conjunction with consumer-grade EEG devices for detecting the conditions of fatigue, attention, emotional arousal, or motion sickness. While it is easy to mount the sensors in the forehead area, which is not covered with hair, the recorded signals become greatly contaminated with eyeblink and movement artifacts, which makes it a challenge to acquire the data of suitable for analysis quality, particularly in few channel systems where a lack of spatial information limits the applicability of sophisticated signal cleaning algorithms. In this article, we demonstrate that by combining the features associated with electrocortical activities and eyeblink recognition analysis, it becomes feasible to design an accurate system for the inattention state prediction using just a single EEG sensor. Approach. Fifteen healthy 22-28 years old participants took part in the experiment that implemented a realistic sustained attention task of nighttime highway driving in a virtual environment. The EEG data were collected using a portable wireless Mindo-4 device, which constitutes an adjustable elastic strip with foam-based sensors, a data-acquisition module, an amplification and digitizing unit, and a Bluetooth (R) module. Main results. The spectral analysis of the EEG samples that immediately preceded the lane departure events revealed alterations in the tonic power spectral density, which accompanied elongations in the drivers' reaction times. The RMSE of the predicted reaction times, which are based on a combination of the brain-related and eyeblink features, is 0.034 +/- 0.019 s, and the r(2) is 0.885 +/- 0.057 according to a within-session leave-one-trial-out cross-validation. Significance. The drowsiness prediction from a frontal single-channel setup can achieve a comparable performance with using an array of occipital EEG sensors. As a direct result of utilizing a dry sensor placed in the non-covered with hair head area, the proposed approach in this study is low-cost and user-friendly.Item type:Item, Single Channel Wireless EEG Device for Real-Time Fatigue Level Detection(2015) ;Ko, Li-Wei ;Lai, Wei-Kai ;Liang, Wei-Gang ;Chuang, Chun-HsiangLu, Shao-WeiDriver fatigue problem is one of the important factors of traffic accidents. Recent years, many research had investigated that using EEG signals can effectively detect driver\'s drowsiness level. However, real-time monitoring system is required to apply these fatigue level detection techniques in the practical application, especially in the real-road driving. Therefore, it required less channels, portable and wireless, real-time monitoring and processing techniques for developing the real-time monitoring system. In this study, we develop a single channel wireless EEG device which can real-time detect driver\'s fatigue level on the mobile device such as smart phone or tablet. The developed device is investigated to obtain a better and precise understanding of brain activities of mental fatigue under driving, which is of great benefit for devolvement of detection of driving fatigue system. This system consists of a Bluetooth-enabled one channel EEG, a regression model, and smartphone, which was a platform recording and transforming the raw EEG data to useful driving status. In the experiment, this was a sustained-attention driving task to implement in a virtual-reality (VR) driving simulator. To training model and develop the system, we were performed for 15 subjects to study Electroencephalography (EEG) brain dynamics by using a mobile and wireless EEG device. Based on the outstanding training results, the leave-one-subject-out cross validation test obtained 90% fatigue detection accuracy. These results indicate that the combination of a smartphone and wireless EEG device constitutes an effective and easy wearable solution for detecting and preventing driver fatigue in real driving environments.
