Item type:Item, A precise bandwidth control arbitration algorithm for hard real-time SoC buses(2007) ;Lin, Bu-Ching ;Lee, Geeng-Wei ;Huang, Juinn-Dar ;Jou, Jing-Yang電子工程學系及電子研究所On an SoC bus, contentions occur while different IP cores request the bus access at the same time. Hence an arbiter is mandatory to deal with the contention issue on a shared bus system. In different applications, IPs may have real-time and/or bandwidth requirements. It is very difficult to design an arbitration algorithm to simultaneously meet these two requirements. In this paper, we propose an innovative arbitration algorithm, RB-lottery, to meet both of the requirements. It can provide not only the hard real-time guarantee but also the precise bandwidth controllability. The experimental results show that RB-lottery outperforms several well-known existing arbitration algorithms.Item type:Item, Fine-grained bandwidth control arbiter and the method thereof(2008-08-28) ;Huang, Juinn-Dar ;Lin, Bu-Ching ;Lee, Geeng-WeiJou, Jing-YangA fine-grained bandwidth control arbiter manages the shared bus usage of the requests of the masters which have real-time and/or bandwidth requirements, moreover, the masters are preset a ticket respectively. The arbiter consists of three components, a real-time handler, a bandwidth regulator, and a lottery manager with tuned weight. The real-time handler grants the most urgent request. The bandwidth regulator handles the bandwidth allocation and blocks the requests of masters that have met the bandwidth requirement. The lottery manager with tuned weight stochastically grants one of the contending masters according to the ticket assignment.Item type:Item, ILP-Based Bitwidth-Aware Subexpression Sharing for Area Minimization in Multiple Constant Multiplication(2014-04-01) ;Lin, Bu-Ching ;Huang, Juinn-Dar ;Jou, Jing-Yang ;電子工程學系及電子研究所Department of Electronics Engineering and Institute of ElectronicsThe notion of multiple constant multiplication (MCM) is extensively adopted in digital signal processing (DSP) applications such as finite impulse filter (FIR) designs. A set of adders is utilized to replace regular multipliers for the multiplications between input data and constant filter coefficients. Though many algorithms have been proposed to reduce the total number of adders in an MCM block for area minimization, they do not consider the actual bitwidth of each adder, which may not estimate the hardware cost well enough. Therefore, in this article we propose a bitwidth-aware MCM optimization algorithm that focuses on minimizing the total number of adder bits rather than the adder count. It first builds a subexpression graph based on the given coefficients, derives a set of constraints for adder bitwidth minimization, and then optimally solves the problem through integer linear programming (ILP). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the required adder bit count and outperforms the existing state-of-the-art techniques.Item type:Item, Probability-Based Static Scaling Optimization for Fixed Wordlength FFT Processors(2014-07-01) ;Lin, Bu-Ching ;Shih, Ming-En ;Huang, Juinn-Dar ;Jou, Jing-Yang電子工程學系及電子研究所The FFT processor serves as one of core components in numerous DSP-based systems, such as OFDM in modem wireless communication. While creating an FFT processor, key parameters, such as architecture, wordlength, and number format, must be all considered very carefully. In this paper, we propose an optimization flow that properly scales fixed-point numeric values at each butterfly stage to maximize the output SQNR under a fixed wordlength constraint. The proposed flow utilizes probability distribution to model the probabilistic behavior of the output signal at each stage. The computation errors due to quantization and saturation operations are statically analyzed before making scaling decisions. Therefore, without a need of time-consuming simulation, our method can efficiently determine the most appropriate number format for each stage and thus optimize the overall output SQNR. Besides, the proposed flow is capable of handling various FFT sizes, FFT algorithms, wordlengths, and input signal distributions. Experimental results indicate that the wordlength can be reduced about three bits for an 8K-point radix-2 memory-based FFT processor without compromise in the output SQNR. Furthermore, the FFT processor created using our static scaling optimization technique can produce a comparable output quality as the one equipped with an extra dynamic number scaling unit, which requires significantly more hardware logic.
