Item type:Item, A Hybrid Heuristic Optimization Approach for Leak Detection in Pipe Networks Using Ordinal Optimization Approach and the Symbiotic Organism Search(2017-10-01) ;Lin, Chao-Chih ;環境工程研究所Institute of Environmental EngineeringA new transient-based hybrid heuristic approach is developed to optimize a transient generation process and to detect leaks in pipe networks. The approach couples the ordinal optimization approach (OOA) and the symbiotic organism search (SOS) to solve the optimization problem by means of iterations. A pipe network analysis model (PNSOS) is first used to determine steady-state head distribution and pipe flow rates. The best transient generation point and its relevant valve operation parameters are optimized by maximizing the objective function of transient energy. The transient event is created at the chosen point, and the method of characteristics (MOC) is used to analyze the transient flow. The OOA is applied to sift through the candidate pipes and the initial organisms with leak information. The SOS is employed to determine the leaks by minimizing the sum of differences between simulated and computed head at the observation points. Two synthetic leaking scenarios, a simple pipe network and a water distribution network (WDN), are chosen to test the performance of leak detection ordinal symbiotic organism search (LDOSOS). Leak information can be accurately identified by the proposed approach for both of the scenarios. The presented technique makes a remarkable contribution to the success of leak detection in the pipe networks.Item type:Item, Adaptive Motion Data Representation with Repeated Motion Analysis(2011-04-01) ;Lin, I-Chen ;Peng, Jen-Yu ;Lin, Chao-Chih ;Tsai, Ming-Han資訊工程學系In this paper, we present a representation method for motion capture data by exploiting the nearly repeated characteristics and spatiotemporal coherence in human motion. We extract similar motion clips of variable lengths or speeds across the database. Since the coding costs between these matched clips are small, we propose the repeated motion analysis to extract the referred and repeated clip pairs with maximum compression gains. For further utilization of motion coherence, we approximate the subspace-projected clip motions or residuals by interpolated functions with range-aware adaptive quantization. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed feature-aware method is of high computational efficiency. Furthermore, it also provides substantial compression gains with comparable reconstruction and perceptual errors.Item type:Item, An Inverse Transient-Based Optimization Approach to Fault Examination in Water Distribution Networks(2019-06-01) ;Lin, Chao-Chih ;Yeh, Hund-Der ;環境工程研究所Institute of Environmental EngineeringThis research introduces an inverse transient-based optimization approach to automatically detect potential faults, such as leaks, partial blockages, and distributed deteriorations, within pipelines or a water distribution network (WDN). The optimization approach is named the Pipeline Examination Ordinal Symbiotic Organism Search (PEOS). A modified steady hydraulic model considering the effects of pipe aging within a system is used to determine the steady nodal heads and piping flow rates. After applying a transient excitation, the transient behaviors in the system are analyzed using the method of characteristics (MOC). A preliminary screening mechanism is adopted to sift the initial organisms (solutions) to perform better to reduce most of the unnecessary calculations caused by incorrect solutions within the PEOS framework. Further, a symbiotic organism search (SOS) imitates symbiotic relationship strategies to move organisms toward the current optimal organism and eliminate the worst ones. Two experiments on leak and blockage detection in a single pipeline that have been presented in the literature were used to verify the applicability of the proposed approach. Two hypothetical WDNs, including a small-scale and large-scale system, were considered to validate the efficiency, accuracy, and robustness of the proposed approach. The simulation results indicated that the proposed approach obtained more reliable and efficient optimal results than other algorithms did. We believe the proposed fault detection approach is a promising technique in detecting faults in field applications.Item type:Item, Analysis of groundwater flow and stream depletion in L-shaped fluvial aquifers(2018-04-19) ;Lin, Chao-Chih ;Chang, Ya-Chi ;Yeh, Hund-Der ;環境工程研究所Institute of Environmental EngineeringUnderstanding the head distribution in aquifers is crucial for the evaluation of groundwater resources. This article develops a model for describing flow induced by pumping in an L-shaped fluvial aquifer bounded by impermeable bedrocks and two nearly fully penetrating streams. A similar scenario for numerical studies was reported in Kihm et al. (2007). The water level of the streams is assumed to be linearly varying with distance. The aquifer is divided into two subregions and the continuity conditions of the hydraulic head and flux are imposed at the interface of the subregions. The steady-state solution describing the head distribution for the model without pumping is first developed by the method of separation of variables. The transient solution for the head distribution induced by pumping is then derived based on the steady-state solution as initial condition and the methods of finite Fourier transform and Laplace transform. Moreover, the solution for stream depletion rate (SDR) from each of the two streams is also developed based on the head solution and Darcy's law. Both head and SDR solutions in the real time domain are obtained by a numerical inversion scheme called the Stehfest algorithm. The software MODFLOW is chosen to compare with the proposed head solution for the L-shaped aquifer. The steady-state and transient head distributions within the L-shaped aquifer predicted by the present solution are compared with the numerical simulations and measurement data presented in Kihm et al. (2007).Item type:Item, Applying Hybrid Heuristic Approach to Identify Contaminant Source Information in Transient Groundwater Flow Systems(2014) ;Yeh, Hund-Der ;Lin, Chao-Chih ;Yang, Bo-Jei ;交大名義發表環境工程研究所Simultaneous identification of the source location and release history in aquifers is complicated and time-consuming if the release of groundwater contaminant source varies in time. This paper presents an approach called SATSO-GWT to solve complicated source release problems which contain the unknowns of three location coordinates and several irregular release periods and concentrations. The SATSO-GWT combines with ordinal optimization algorithm (OOA), roulette wheel approach, and a source identification algorithm called SATS-GWT. The SATS-GWT was developed based on simulated annealing, tabu search, and three-dimensional groundwater flow and solute transport model MD2K-GWT. The OOA and roulette wheel method are utilized mainly to reduce the size of feasible solution domain and accelerate the identification of the source information. A hypothetic site with one contaminant source location and two release periods is designed to assess the applicability of the present approach. The results indicate that the performance of SATSO-GWT is superior to that of SATS-GWT. In addition, the present approach works very effectively in dealing with the cases which have different initial guesses of source location and measurement errors in the monitoring points as well as problems with large suspicious areas and several source release periods and concentrations.Item type:Item, Feature-point driven 3D expression editing(2007) ;Chuang, Chii-Yuan ;Lin, I-Chen ;Lo, Yung-Sheng ;Lin, Chao-Chih資訊工程學系Producing a life-like 3D facial expression is usually a labor-intensive process. in movie and game industries, motion capture and 3D scanning techniques, acquiring motion data from real persons, are used to speed up the production. However, acquiring dynamic and subtle details, such as wrinkles, on a face are still difficult or expensive. In this paper, we propose a feature-point-driven approach to synthesize novel expressions with details. Our work can be divided into two main parts: acquisition of 3D facial details and expression synthesis. 3D facial details are estimated from sample images by a shape-from-shading technique. While employing relation between specific feature points and facial surfaces in prototype images, our system provides an intuitive editing tool to synthesize 3D geometry and corresponding 2D textures or 3D detailed normals of novel expressions. Besides expression editing, the proposed method can also be extended to enhance existing motion capture data with facial details.Item type:Item, Reconstructing the release history of a groundwater contaminant based on AT123D(2016-12) ;Yeh, Hund-Der ;Lin, Chao-Chih ;Chen, Chi-Fen ;環境工程研究所Institute of Environmental EngineeringThe reconstruction of the source release history for groundwater contamination provides useful environmental forensic information in identifying the responsible parties for a contaminant plume at a known source location if its owner changed several times in the past. The objective of this study is to develop a novel method consisting of function-fitting technique, simulated annealing, and a fundamental solution of the contaminant transport equation given in AT123D (Yeh, 1981) to recover the source release history of a groundwater contamination. AT123D is an analytical model for simulating transient, one-, two-, and three-dimensional groundwater contaminant transport in aquifer systems. The method developed herein is for recovering the release history of a continuous and finite release duration source and therefore can handle a great variety of realistic problems. Cases with various types of source geometry and aquifer configuration are considered. The influence of contaminant biodegradation, degree of dispersion, location of monitoring well, use of temporal concentration data or spatial concentration data, and presence of two contaminated sources are also investigated. Finally, a few guidelines for the optimal sampling strategy on the reconstruction of the source release history are recommended.
