Item type:Item, A Comprehensive Wiring Diagram of the Protocerebral Bridge for Visual Information Processing in the Drosophila Brain(2013-05-01) ;Lin, Chih-Yung ;Chuang, Chao-Chun ;Hua, Tzu-En ;Chen, Chun-ChaoDickson, Barry J.How the brain perceives sensory information and generates meaningful behavior depends critically on its underlying circuitry. The protocerebral bridge (PB) is a major part of the insect central complex (CX), a premotor center that may be analogous to the human basal ganglia. Here, by deconstructing hundreds of PB single neurons and reconstructing them into a common three-dimensional framework, we have constructed a comprehensive map of PB circuits with labeled polarity and predicted directions of information flow. Our analysis reveals a highly ordered information processing system that involves directed information flow among CX subunits through 194 distinct PB neuron types. Circuitry properties such as mirroring, convergence, divergence, tiling, reverberation, and parallel signal propagation were observed; their functional and evolutional significance is discussed. This layout of PB neuronal circuitry may provide guidelines for further investigations on transformation of sensory (e.g., visual) input into locomotor commands in fly brains.Item type:Item, Banking Crises and Market Timing: Evidence from M&As in the Banking Sector(2020-06-01) ;Shen, Chung-Hua ;Chen, Yehning ;Hsu, Hsing-Hua ;Lin, Chih-Yung資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所We investigate whether the gains are greater for banks that conduct mergers and acquisitions (M&As) during banking crises than during non-crisis periods. We contribute to the literature by examining 1984 M&As using global banking sample from 106 countries (areas) during 1994 ~ 2009. We find the synergistic gains of acquiring banks during banking crises are larger than those during non-crisis periods. We further find that such gains are greater when acquiring weak targets, for acquirers in developed countries, and for acquirers in domestic M&As. This study confirms that a banking crisis is an appropriate time for banks to conduct M&As.Item type:Item, Do short sellers exploit risky business models of banks? Evidence from two banking crises(2020-02-01) ;Lin, Chih-Yung ;Bui, Dien Giau ;Lin, Tse-Chun ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Department of Information Management and FinanceWe find that changes in short interest predict banks' stock returns during two recent banking crises. Furthermore, before the 2007-2008 crisis, short interest increased more for banks with worse performance during the Long-Term Capital Management crisis of 1998. We also find that changes in short interest predicted banks' loan quality and default risk during the 2007-2008 crisis. The results are stronger for banks with higher levels of risk-taking. Overall, our findings indicate that short sellers were informed about the persistent risky business models of banks and shorted those banks before the 2007-2008 crisis. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. The sample consists of 2,457 financial intermediaries from 1990 to 2016. First, we show that short interest is positively correlated to the failures of financial intermediaries. Second, we construct two measures of abnormal short interest before a failure and find robust evidence that this interest is positively correlated to the failures. Our empirical results confirm that short sellers do predict the failures in financial intermediaries. Therefore, the trading information from short sellers could be a vital resource for the government to prevent the occurrence of financial instability. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. The mobility and constant overdrive current of the PMOSFETs fabricated using PNO as a gate oxide material are about 30 and 23% higher than those of the devices fabricated using TNO, respectively. The core PMOSFETs fabricated using PNO show a better NBTI and HCI immunity than those fabricated using TNO owing to the lower nitrogen concentration at the SiO2/Si-substrate interface. However, the I/O PMOSFETs fabricated using PNO show a higher HCI-induced degradation rate because of a higher oxide bulk trap density but a better NBTI than the devices fabricated using TNO at a normal stressed bias due to a low interface trap density.Item type:Item, The Government's Role in Government-owned Banks(2014-06-01) ;Shen, Chung-Hua ;Hasan, IftekharLin, Chih-YungIn this study, we reinvestigate the question of whether government banks are inferior to private banks. We use cross country data from 1993 to 2007 to trace the different types of government banks. These types comprise banks that acquire distressed banks, normal banks, or no banks at all. Contrary to common belief, the evidence shows that unless government banks are required to purchase a distressed bank because of political factors (the government's role), their performances are at par with that of private banks. This fact particularly holds true in countries with poor records on political rights and governance.Item type:Item, Three-Dimensional Reconstruction of Brain-wide Wiring Networks in Drosophila at Single-Cell Resolution(2011-01-11) ;Chiang, Ann-Shyn ;Lin, Chih-Yung ;Chuang, Chao-Chun ;Chang, Hsiu-MingHsieh, Chang-HuainBackground: Animal behavior is governed by the activity of interconnected brain circuits. Comprehensive brain wiring maps are thus needed in order to formulate hypotheses about information flow and also to guide genetic manipulations aimed at understanding how genes and circuits orchestrate complex behaviors. Results: To assemble this map, we deconstructed the adult Drosophila brain into approximately 16,000. single neurons and reconstructed them into a common standardized framework to produce a virtual fly brain. We have constructed a mesoscopic map and found that it consists of 41 local processing units (LPUs), six hubs, and 58 tracts covering the whole Drosophila brain. Despite individual local variation, the architecture of the Drosophila brain shows invariance for both the aggregation of local neurons (LNs) within specific LPUs and for the connectivity of projection neurons (PNs) between the same set of LPUs. An open-access image database, named FlyCircuit, has been constructed for online data archiving, mining, analysis, and three-dimensional visualization of all single neurons, brain-wide LPUs, their wiring diagrams, and neural tracts. Conclusion: We found that the Drosophila brain is assembled from families of multiple LPUs and their interconnections. This provides an essential first step in the analysis of information processing within and between neurons in a complete brain.Item type:Item, Wisdom of crowds before the 2007?2009 global financial crisis *(2020-06-01) ;Chau, Michael ;Lin, Chih-Yung ;Lin, Tse-Chun ;資訊管理與財務金融系 註:原資管所+財金所Department of Information Management and Finance
