Item type:Item, A fluorene-modified porphyrin for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells(2012) ;Wu, Cheng-Hua ;Pan, Tsung-Yu ;Hong, Shang-Hao ;Wang, Chin-LiKuo, Hshin-HuiPorphyrins bearing a polyaromatic or a heterocyclic group are prepared to study their fundamental and photovoltaic properties. Solar cells sensitized with a fluorene-modified porphyrin outperform other dyes in the series, reaching similar to 90% efficiency of N719 dye.Item type:Item, A strategy to design highly efficient porphyrin sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells(2011) ;Chang, Yu-Cheng ;Wang, Chin-Li ;Pan, Tsung-Yu ;Hong, Shang-HaoLan, Chi-MingWe designed highly efficient porphyrin sensitizers with two phenyl groups at meso-positions of the macrocycle bearing two ortho-substituted long alkoxyl chains for dye-sensitized solar cells; the ortho-substituted devices exhibit significantly enhanced photovoltaic performances with the best porphyrin, LD14, showing J(SC) = 19.167 mA cm(-2), V(OC) = 0.736 V, FF = 0.711, and overall power conversion efficiency eta = 10.17%.Item type:Item, Co-Sensitization of Zinc and Free-Base Porphyrins with an Organic Dye for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells(2014-12-04) ;Wang, Chin-Li ;Shiu, Jia-Wei ;Hsiao, Yen-Ni ;Chao, Pei-ShangDiau, Eric Wei-GuangCo-sensitization of an efficient zinc porphyrin sensitizer (LD14) with its free-base analogue (H(2)LD14) and an organic dye (AN-3) improves the efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cells. The superior performance of the co-sensitized system is attributed to complementary absorptions of the three dyes, resulting in panchromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency responses at the expense of only slightly lowered open-circuit voltage.Item type:Item, Design and Characterization of Novel Porphyrins with Oligo(phenylethylnyl) Links of Varied Length for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Synthesis and Optical, Electrochemical, and Photovoltaic Investigation(2009-01-15) ;Lin, Ching-Yao ;Lo, Chen-Fu ;Luo, Liyang ;Lu, Hsueh-PeiHung, Chen-ShiungNovel zinc porphyrins with 1-4 pi-conjugated phenylethyinyl (PE) units (labeled PE1-PE4) as a link of controlled length were synthesized for fundamental tests and applications as a dye-serisitized solar cell (DSSC). The UV-visible spectra of the solution samples show clear absorption patterns of the PE groups in a region 300-400 nm, consistent with results calculated with density-functional theory. Cyclic voltammograms of PE1-PE4 in tetrahydrofuran show similar electrochemical potentials for each compound. Ferntosecond fluorescence up-conversion of solution samples and of porphyrin-sensitized TiO(2) films was measured with excitation at 420 or 430 nm and emission at 460, 470, 620, and 680 nm. When these porphyrins were fabricated into DSSC devices, the efficiency of power conversion of these devices decreased systematically with increasing length of the link: 2.5 +/- 0.2% (PE1), 2.0 +/- 0.1% (PE2), 0.78 +/- 0.09% (PE3), 0.25 +/- 0.02% (PE4). This great photovoltaic degradation from PE1 to PE4 is not interpretable according to the rate of electron injection independent of length; other factors, including electron transfer from the semiconductor back to the porphyrin cation or the electrolyte, must be considered to account for the observed dependence of photovoltaic performance on length.Item type:Item, Dual Functionality of BODIPY Chromophore in Porphyrin-Sensitized Nanocrystalline Solar Cells(2012-05-17) ;Shrestha, Maheshwar ;Si, Liping ;Chang, Chia-Wei ;He, HongshanSykes, AndrewA new organic dye (BET) was synthesized and coadsorbed on TiO2 nanoparticles to make mixed BET/porphyrirf-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The BET is a boron dipyrromethene compound with one benzoic acid group attached to the meso position for its binding to the TiO2 nanoparticles and two ethyl groups in the 3 and 3' positions of pyrrolic units to broaden its absorption. Two ethyl groups are in the cis position, as revealed by its single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The BET exhibits strong absorption in the green light region with an absorption maximum at 528 nm in CH2Cl2, which is complementary to the absorption spectrum of porphyrin dyes. When the BET coadsorbs on the TiO2 nanoparticles with porphyrin dyes (TMPZn and LD12), the power conversion efficiencies increase from 1.09% to 2.90% for TMPZn-sensitized solar cells and from 6.65% to 7.60% for LD12-sensitized solar cells, respectively. The IPCE of the devices in the green light region increases dramatically due to the cosensitizing effect of BET. The fluorescence of BET in solution is partially quenched and that of porphyrin is enhanced in the presence of BET dye, indicating an intermolecular energy transfer from BET to the porphyrin dyes. The direct electron injection from BET to the TiO2 conduction band was rather poor; only negligible photocurrent was observed. Comparative studies of absorption spectra on the TiO2 nanoparticle films and electrochemical impedance at the dye/TiO2 interface also indicate that the BET is an excellent coadsorber to prevent the aggregation of porphyrin dyes. An intermolecular energy transfer model is proposed to account for the observed photovoltaic enhancement of the cosensitization system.Item type:Item, Effects of aggregation and electron injection on photovoltaic performance of porphyrin-based solar cells with oligo(phenylethynyl) links inside TiO(2) and Al(2)O(3) nanotube arrays(2010-01-01) ;Luo, Liyang ;Lin, Chia-Jung ;Tsai, Chiau-Yiag ;Wu, Hui-PingLi, Lu-LinPorphyrins with phenylethynyl links of varied length (PE1-PE4) were sensitized on vertically oriented, anodic titanium-oxide (ATO) nanotube arrays for application as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The efficiency of power conversion decreased systematically from the dye with a short link to the dye with a long link. We measured the efficiency of conversion of incident photons to current (IPCE), the photocurrent decay of the devices, and steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectra of the thin-film samples to understand how the cell performance depends on the length of the link. Measurements of femtosecond fluorescence confirmed that the efficiency of electron injection depended on length because of dye aggregation that significantly increased the rate of aggregate-induced energy transfer for porphyrins with a long link. The rate of electron injection depended on the length of the link with an attenuation factor beta similar to 0.1 angstrom(-1). Resonant energy transfer (RET) kinetics of porphyrins sensitized on anodic aluminium-oxide (AAO) nanotube arrays were performed with picosecond time-correlated single-photon counting and four molecular densities for each porphyrin. The kinetic data of PE1 and PE2 are described satisfactorily according to a Forster model, whereas those of PE3 and PE4 conform to a Dexter formula. A formation of clusters is proposed to rationalize the observed density-dependent kinetics for the RET of porphyrins on semiconductor films.Item type:Item, Effects of aggregation and electron injection on photovoltaic performance of porphyrin-based solar cells with oligo(phenylethynyl) links inside TiO2 and Al2O3 nanotube arrays(2010-01-01) ;Luo, Liyang ;Lin, Chia-Jung ;Tsai, Chiau-Yiag ;Wu, Hui-PingLi, Lu-LinPorphyrins with phenylethynyl links of varied length (PE1-PE4) were sensitized on vertically oriented, anodic titanium-oxide (ATO) nanotube arrays for application as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The overall efficiencies of the corresponding devices show a trend LD4 > LD3p > LD2 > LD3a > LD1. Significantly, LD4 features J(SC)/mA cm(-2) 19.627, V(OC)/V = 0.711, and FF = 0.721, giving an efficiency eta = 10.06% of power conversion. This value is superior to that of a N719-based solar cell fabricated under similar experimental conditions. The remarkable performance of the LD4 cell is rationalized to be due to the broader and more red-shifted spectral feature that makes the IPCE spectrum to cover broadly across the entire visible region, 400-800 nm.Item type:Item, Enhanced photovoltaic performance with co-sensitization of porphyrin and an organic dye in dye-sensitized solar cells(2012-04-01) ;Lan, Chi-Ming ;Wu, Hui-Ping ;Pan, Tsung-Yu ;Chang, Chia-WeiChao, Wei-ShanWe designed a stepwise approach for co-sensitization of a zinc porphyrin sensitizer (LD12) with a spirally configured organic dye (CD5) for dye-sensitized solar cells. The co-sensitized LD12 + CD5 device showed significantly enhanced V-OC and J(SC) relative to its individual single-dye sensitized devices. Upon optimization, the device made of the LD12 + CD5 system yielded J(SC)/mA cm(-2) = 16.7, V-OC/V = 0.74, FF = 0.73 and eta = 9.0%; this performance is superior to that of either individual device made from LD12 (eta = 7.5%) and CD5 (eta = 5.7%) under the same conditions of fabrication. To understand the effects of the potential shift and charge recombination on the cell performance, we measured charge-extraction (CE) and intensity-modulated photovoltage spectra (IMVS). Upon sensitization with each dye, the TiO2 potentials are similar, but co-sensitization causes the potential to shift down (cathodic shift). Charge recombination was significantly retarded for the co-sensitized system relative to each individual dye-sensitized system, to account for the enhanced V-OC for the former relative to the latter. A test of stability indicates a systematic trend between the LD12 + CD5 and LD12 devices; the performance of the co-sensitized device degraded only similar to 15% and remained stable during the period of 500-1000 h near 295 K.Item type:Item, Enveloping porphyrins for efficient dye-sensitized solar cells(2012-05-01) ;Wang, Chin-Li ;Lan, Chi-Ming ;Hong, Shang-Hao ;Wang, Yi-FenPan, Tsung-YuA series of porphyrins bearing alkoxyl and/or alkyl chains were prepared to investigate the roles of alkoxyl/alkyl chains in the enhanced photovoltaic performance of the dyes. Based on the experimental results and the molecular simulations, we demonstrated that suitable long alkoxyl chains are capable of wrapping the porphyrin core, thus resulting in decreased dye aggregation, elevated excited states and LUMOs, and improved photovoltaic performance.Item type:Item, Femtosecond Transient Absorption of Zinc Porphyrins with Oligo(phenylethylnyl) Linkers in Solution and on TiO(2) Films(2009-07-09) ;Chang, Chih-Wei ;Luo, Liyang ;Chou, Chung-Kung ;Lo, Chen-FuLin, Ching-YaoWe measured femtosecond transient absorption of dye solutions and TiO(2) films sensitized with two zinc porphyrins (PE1 and PE4) to investigate the interfacial dynamics of electron transfer in relation to the dependence of cell performance on the length of the linker (Lin, C.-Y.; Lo, C.-F.; Luo, L.; Lu, H.-P.; Hung, C.-S.; Diau, E. W.-G. J. Phys. Chem. C 2009, 113, 755-764). For both porphyrins adsorbed on TiO(2) films with S(1) excitation (lambda(ex) = 620 nm), the transient absorption kinetics probed at 630 nm and 4.9 mu m are complementary to each other because only the excited-state and ground-state species were observed at 630 nm whereas only the charge-separation intermediates were observed at 4.9 mu m. The transient of the PE1/TiO(2) film shows a single exponential decay with a large offset, whereas the transient of the PE4/TiO(2) film displays a biexponential decay with a small offset. Because of the existence of an additional ps component, the amount of free delocalized electrons (offset signal) in PE4/TiO(2) is smaller than that in PEI/TiO(2). Our results imply that back electron transfer at the TiO(2)/dye interface is an important factor to be considered to account for the cell performance of a device.Item type:Item, Femtosecond Transient Absorption of Zinc Porphyrins with Oligo(phenylethylnyl) Linkers in Solution and on TiO2 Films(2009-07-09) ;Chang, Chih-Wei ;Luo, Liyang ;Chou, Chung-Kung ;Lo, Chen-FuLin, Ching-YaoWe measured femtosecond transient absorption of dye solutions and TiO2 films sensitized with two zinc porphyrins (PE1 and PE4) to investigate the interfacial dynamics of electron transfer in relation to the dependence of cell performance on the length of the linker (Lin, C.-Y.; Lo, C.-F.; Luo, L.; Lu, H.-P.; Hung, C.-S.; Diau, E. Our results indicate that the transient in solution involves a persistent component that becomes completely quenched in thin-film samples; for solid films at least three decay coefficients are required to fit the transients. For ZnBPP/TiO2 films, the fluorescence was quenched significantly through J-type aggregation and interfacial electron transfer (IET) through space. Photocurrent measurements were also performed to confirm the existence of IET through space between ZnBPP molecules and TiO2 nanoparticles. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The device made of LD31 exhibited panchromatic spectral features covering the whole visible region and further extending over 800 nm. When combined with an organic dye (AN-4), the performance of the LD31/AN-4 co-sensitized device attained JSC/ mA cm(-2) = 20.3, VOC/mV = 704, FF = 0.72, and the overall efficiency of power conversion eta=10.3%.Item type:Item, Multi-resolution volume rendering of large time-varying data using video-based compression(2008) ;Ko, Chia-Lin ;Liao, Horng-Shyang ;Wang, Tsai-Pei ;Fu, Kuang-WeiLin, Ching-YaoWe present a new framework that combines the hierarchical multi-resolution representation with video-based compression to manage and render large scale time-varying data. In the preprocessing step, the proposed method first constructs a multi-resolution hierarchy using octree structure for each individual time step, and then applies a motion-compensation-based prediction to compress the octree nodes. During rendering stage, the data is decompressed on-the-fly and rendered using hardware texture mapping. The proposed approach eliminates the hierarchical decompression dependency commonly found in the conventional hierarchical wavelet representation methods, which leads to a more efficient reconstruction of data along the time axis. The system provides the user with a spatial region-of-interest (ROI) to adjust the spatial level-of-detail (LOD) selection, and a temporal ROI which is a sub-region only for frequent update during playback. With a suitable control of both ROIs, our system can reach an interactive playback frame rate. This allows the user to observe the dynamic nature of large time-varying data sets.Item type:Item, Panchromatic co-sensitization of porphyrin-sensitized solar cells to harvest near-infrared light beyond 900 nm(2015-01-01) ;Shiu, Jia-Wei ;Chang, Yen-Cheng ;Chan, Chien-Yi ;Wu, Hui-PingHsu, Hung-YuWe designed a dimeric porphyrin dye (LDD1) based on an efficient push-pull zinc porphyrin (LD14) with extended pi-conjugation through coupling of two zinc porphine cores via an acetylene bridge at the meso position of the porphyrin to extend the absorption spectrum effectively into the near infrared region. The effect of dye aggregation among porphyrin molecules was significantly suppressed when the LDD1 and LD14 dyes were co-sensitized on a nanocrystalline TiO2 film in a dye-sensitized photovoltaic system. The light-harvesting ability of the device exhibits a panchromatic feature covering a broad spectral region from 400 nmto 900 nm, which results in a short-circuit current density of 21.3 mA cm(-2) and a power conversion efficiency of 10.4% in an iodine-based solar cell.Item type:Item, Performance Characterization of Dye-Sensitized Photovoltaics under Indoor Lighting(2017-04-20) ;Chen, Chia-Yuan ;Jian, Zih-Hong ;Huang, Shih-Han ;Lee, Kun-MuKao, Ming-HsuanIndoor utilization of emerging photovoltaics is promising; however, efficiency characterization under room lighting is challenging. We report the first round-robin interlaboratory study of performance measurement for dye-sensitized photovoltaics (cells and mini-modules) and one silicon solar cell under a fluorescent dim light. Among 15 research groups, the relative deviation in power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the samples reaches an unprecedented 152%. On the basis of the comprehensive results, the gap between photometry and radiometry measurements and the response of devices to the dim illumination are identified as critical obstacles to the correct PCE. Therefore, we use an illuminometer as a prime standard with a spectroradiometer to quantify the intensity of indoor lighting and adopt the reverse-biased current voltage (I-V) characteristics as an indicator to qualify the I-V sampling time for dye-sensitized photovoltaics. The recommendations can brighten the prospects of emerging photovoltaics for indoor applications.Item type:Item, Photoactivation Studies of Zinc Porphyrin-Myoglobin System and Its Application for Light-Chemical Energy Conversion(2011) ;Chang, Chin-Hao ;Hu, Yi-Ting ;Lo, Chen-Fu ;Luo, LiyangLin, Hung-MingAn artificial zinc porphyrin-myoglobin- based photo-chemical energy conversion system, consisting of ZnPP-Mb or ZnPE1-Mb as a photosensitizer, NADP(+) as an electron acceptor, and triethanolamine as an electron donor, has been constructed to mimic photosystem I. The photoirradiated product is able to reduce a single-electron acceptor protein cytochrome c, but cannot catalyze the two-electron reduction of acetaldehyde by alcohol dehydrogenase, thus demonstrating a single electron transfer mechanism. Furthermore, the artificial system can bifunctionally promote oxidoredox reactions, depending on the presence or absence of a sacrificial electron donor, thus suggesting its potential application in electrochemical regeneration steps involved in chemical transformation and/or energy conversion.Item type:Item, Porphyrin-Containing Polymer as a Superior Blue Light-Absorbing Additive To Afford High-J(sc) Ternary Solar Cells(2019-01-09) ;Li, Chia-Hua ;Chang, Chia-Chih ;Hsiao, Yu-Hsuan ;Peng, Shih-HaoSu, Yi-JiaIntegrating an additional component featuring complementary light absorption into binary polymer solar cells is a superior tactic to ameliorate solar cell efficiency and stability. An appropriate additive not only extends the absorption range but may also facilitate charge separation and transport processes. In this work, we elucidate the effects of incorporating a porphyrin-containing conjugated polymer (PPor-1), which displays absorption in 350-500 nm, into binary PTB7-Th:4TIC and PTB7-Th:ITIC blends, affording devices with an average power conversion efficiency approaching 9%. We successfully demonstrate that PPor-1 can be incorporated as an additive to impart improved J(sc) (up to 19.1 mA cm(-2)).
