Item type:Item, A 0.8V, 43.5 mu W ECG Signal Acquisition IC with a Referenceless Time-to-Digital Converter(2016) ;Lin, Shu-Hsuan ;Lin, Fu-To ;Cheng, Nai-Chen ;Liao, Yu-Te電機工程學系This paper presents a 0.8V analog front-end (AFE) with referenceless time-based digitalization architecture for electrocardiogram (ECG) signal acquisition. Compared to the conventional voltage-domain architecture, the proposed AFE achieves a smaller chip area, lower power consumption, and self-calibration without the high-accuracy clock as well as voltage reference. The chip is fabricated using 0.18 mu m CMOS technology and occupies a chip area of 0.84 mm(2). The design attains a variable gain from 35 dB to 47 dB within a bandwidth of 7 kHz and 10-bit time-to-digital conversion while consuming 43.5 mu W at a supply voltage of 0.8V.Item type:Item, A 2.2 mu W,-12 dBm RF-Powered Wireless Current Sensing Readout Interface IC With Injection-Locking Clock Generation(2016-07) ;Lin, Fu-To ;Lu, Shao-Yung ;Liao, Yu-Te ;電機學院College of Electrical and Computer EngineeringThis paper presents a wireless-powering current-sensing readout system on a CMOS platform for portable electrochemical measurement. The wireless sensing system includes energy-efficient power management circuitry, a sensor readout interface, and a backscattering wireless communication scheme. For power-and-area-constrained bio-sensing applications, the proposed readout circuitry incorporates an ultra-low-power potentiostatic system that generates a current according to the electrochemical reaction, as well as an oscillator-based time-to-digital converter instead of a voltage-domain analog-to-digital converter. To avoid a bulky battery and power-hungry clock reference, the chip is wirelessly powered and injection-locked by the modulated radio waves, which includes a 918 MHz carrier signal mixed with a 3.2 MHz modulated signal. The chip, implemented using a 0.18-mu m CMOS process, occupies a silicon area of 1 mm(2). The proposed design achieves a sensitivity of 289 Hz/nA and an R-2 linearity of 0.997 over a current range of 200 nA while consuming 2.2 mu W at a supply voltage of 0.8 V. The chip, integrated with a PCB antenna, has minimum sensitivities of -12 dBm and -25 dBm for RF-powering and injection-locking mechanisms, respectively.Item type:Item, A Self-Powering Wireless Environment Monitoring System Using Soil Energy(2015-07-01) ;Lin, Fu-To ;Kuo, Yu-Chun ;Hsieh, Jen-Chien ;Tsai, Hsi-YuanLiao, Yu-TeThis paper presents a self-powering wireless environment monitoring system using renewable and cost-efficient soil energy. The D-size (55.8 cm(3)) soil energy cell with carbon and zinc electrodes can produce similar to 60-100 mu W, depending on the water contents and microbial reactions in the soil. The RC circuit model of a soil cell is proposed for understanding the electrical characteristics of the cell. The wireless sensing system, including temperature and air moisture sensors, a custom low-power capacitive sensor readout silicon chip, a microcontroller, and a Bluetooth low-energy transmitter, is demonstrated for long-term environmental monitoring solely by the fabricated D-size soil cell. The capacitive sensor readout chip is fabricated in a 0.18-mu m CMOS process and only consumes 3 mu W. The capacitance readout range is 160-200 pF. The total power consumption of the wireless temperature and air moisture monitoring system is similar to 20 mu W and 1 mW in the sleep mode and the active wireless data communication operations, respectively. The new technology can enable remote field environment monitoring with less labor-intensive work and battery replacement.Item type:Item, A Wirelessly Powered CMOS Electrochemical Sensing Interface With Power-Aware RF-DC Power Management(2018-09-01) ;Tsai, Jui-Hsiang ;Kuo, Chen-Yi ;Lin, Shu-Hsuan ;Lin, Fu-ToLiao, Yu-TeA wirelessly powered electrochemical sensing chip with high-efficiency adaptive power management for a wide RF-powering range and a low-noise chopper-stabilization potentiostat for high-resolution electrochemical current detection is presented. The chip is fabricated using a 0.18-mu m CMOS process. A novel, power-aware, multiple-path, RF-energy harvesting front end extends the high-efficiency (> 20%) RF-powering range to 8.5 dB. In the sensor-readout interface, a chopper-stabilization potentiostat with an oscillator-based current readout achieves a 3.3-pA current resolution in the current range of 800nA and an R-2 linearity of 0.9987 while consuming only 4.4 mu W. The power efficiency of the electrochemical readout interface is 0.18, and the dynamic detection range is 107 dB.Item type:Item, Towards a Self-Sustained Moisture and Temperature Monitoring System using Soil Energy(2013) ;Lin, Fu-To ;Hsieh, Jen-Chien ;Wen, Fu-Chun ;Wang, Wei-KuanLee, Huang-ChenLimited energy source dominates the use of sensor system, especially for outdoor environment monitoring. This paper presents a self-sustained moisture and temperature monitoring system using soil energy. The fabricated 36.5 cm(3) soil cell (Zinc-Carbon electrodes) can provide maximum output power of 70 mu W at a load of 2k Omega. The proposed sensor system includes custom DC-DC converter IC, microcontroller, micro-LCD display and temperature as well as moisture sensors. The system was demonstrated measuring temperature and moisture changes directly using inexpensive and renewable soil energy without external power supply. This technology may enable remote field environment monitoring with less labor-intensive work and battery replacement.
