Item type:Item, A Comparison and Evaluation of Different BLE Connection Methods for Wearable Devices(2017-01-01) ;Ting, Yu-Yen ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceInternet of Thing (IoT) is growing rapidly with more devices connected to the Internet. One emerging group of these is called wearable devices. The wireless technologies used by wearable devices need to consider the long lasting of battery life. Consequently, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has emerged as the wireless technologies for wearable devices due to its features of low power consumption. In this research we focus on enabling technologies that will facilitate seamless communications between the wearable devices and the oneM2M platform based on BLE. We evaluate three different designs: (1) IPE (Inter-working Proxy Application Entity), (2) RESTful BLE and (3) 6LoWPAN over BLE. Our research compares and evaluates the main features and behaviors of these three designs and investigates key performance indicators of each such as power consumption, system performance, transmission efficiency and design complexity. With our research we are able to determine which specific design is most suitable for wearable devices under different system design requirements.Item type:Item, A Feasiblity Study on Developing IoT/M2M Applications over ETSI M2M Architecture(2013-01-01) ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;Ren, Yi ;Cerritos, Eduardo ;交大工研院聯合研發中心NCTU/ITRI Joint Research CenterA common service platform is considered as the key enabler to catalyze the development of IoT/M2M applications for a large variety of vertical markets such as smart energy, smart transportation, home and industry automation, eHealth and connected vehicles. This paper reports an initial effort at National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan with such an experimental approach. We first train our graduate students with an ETSI M2M architecture-compliant service platform OpenMTC from FOKUS, and then charter them with the tasks of developing diverse M2M applications. The effort is used as a feasibility study to investigate how useful the notion of a common service platform for IoT/M2M is and how urgent an international standard is required in defining such a platform. We intend to use the result of the study to create a suitable IoT/M2M curriculum for our students.Item type:Item, Analysis of Security Protocols and Corresponding Cipher Suites in ETSI M2M Standards(2015) ;Adrianto, Daniel ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系 ;電機資訊國際碩士學位學程Department of Computer ScienceETSI, as a standard body in telecommunication industry, has defined a comprehensive set of common security mechanisms to protect the IoT/M2M system. They are Service Bootstrapping, Service Connection, and mId Security. For each mechanism, there are several protocols that we can choose. However, the standards do not describe in what condition a particular protocol will be the best among the others. In this paper we analyze which protocol is the most suitable for the use case where an IoT/M2M application generates a large amount of data in a short period of time. The criteria used include efficiency, cost, and effectiveness of the protocol. Our analysis is done based on the actual measurement of an ETSI standard-compliant prototype.Item type:Item, Challenges of Incorporating OMA LWM2M Gateway in M2M Standard Architecture(2016) ;Chang, Wei-Gang ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceThe Internet of Things (IoT) enables the connections of billions of devices to the Internet. It is thus very important to effectively manage this huge amount of devices. Among many available device management protocols, Open Mobile Alliance Lightweight M2M (OMA LWM2M) has been adopted by the global M2M standards, ETSI M2M and oneM2M as the standard for device management. However, OMA LWM2M-supported devices are still not widely available because the standard is relatively recently published. On the other hand, there are millions of legacy devices and sensors that do not support the OMA LWM2M protocol. Consequently, how to integrate non-OMA LWM2M devices so that they can be managed by OMA LWM2M Server is urgently needed. Moreover, how to exercise OMA LWM2M device management from the M2M standards is also not well addressed by the standard. In this paper, we address both challenges by first designing an OMA LWM2M gateway between OMA LWM2M server and non-OMA LWM2M devices (legacy devices). Then we further integrate this gateway in the ETSI M2M and oneM2M-like standard architecture. The paper not only explains the capabilities of our system in detail but also analyzes the differences between the OMA system standalone and the one embedded in the M2M standard architecture.Item type:Item, Charging Architecture for M2M Communications(2016-01-01) ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;Chen, Bo-Yan ;Lin, Bo-Ting ;Hu, Wan-Hsun交大名義發表Machine to Machine (M2M) communications or the Internet of Thing (IoT) is emerging as a new form of communications in our society. With such proliferation of the IoT/M2M, we have started to experience various smart services such as smart home, connected car, e-health, smart grid, etc. These IoT/M2M services are set to improve our life significantly. However, in IoT/M2M many things only exchange a small amount of data while generate a large amount of requests such as network connectivity requests, notification requests and storage requests. The traditional charging models such as those based on amount of data transfer are no longer adequate for M2M communications. As new charging factors and charging models are identified for M2M communications, a new charging architecture needs to be designed for M2M communications. This paper proposes such an M2M charging architecture that is designed to collect charging information for M2M communications based on the notions of charging factors and charging models.Item type:Item, Charging Models for M2M Communications(2016) ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;Tsai, Wandu ;Lin, Bo-Ting ;Hu, Wan-Hsun交大名義發表The emerging of M2M communications enables many new applications such as smart grid, connected vehicle, eHealth and smart city. The telecom network is an ideal environment to support the implementation of these applications. However, the property of M2M communications is very different from that of traditional telecomm. Consequently, charging models designed for traditional telecomm such as pricing by amount of data transfer are no longer adequate for M2M communications. More general charging models are needed to accommodate new charging factors identified for M2M communications. With appropriate charging models, the amount of resources consumed by M2M communications can be assessed fairly and charged accordingly. This paper proposes general charging models for M2M communications based on two innovative ingredients: charging factors and pricing parameters.Item type:Item, Converging MQTT resources in ETSI standards based M2M platform(2014) ;Chen, Hsiang Wen ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系 ;交大工研院聯合研發中心Department of Computer ScienceOne of the key challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT) is the integration of heterogeneous technologies and communications solutions. This paper proposes a method to integrate Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol with the ETSI M2M architecture via a new network function called MQTT proxy. The MQTT proxy, on the one side, acts as an MQTT broker to the MQTT clients. While on the other side, it serves as a Gateway Application (GA) for interfacing with the ETSI M2M-compliant architecture, specifically OpenMTC developed by Fraunhofer FOKUS. By the MQTT Proxy, MQTT resources can be converged in the ETSI M2M architecture. Finally, we compare the MQTT Proxy with our previous HTTP Proxy.Item type:Item, Distributed Artificial Intelligence enabled by oneM2M and Fog Networking(2018-01-01) ;Cai, Kun Lun ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceDeep learning enabled by neural networks has been proven to be an effective Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm in sophisticated applications. The algorithm is normally divided into two phases: learning phase and inference phase. In this research, we assume the learning phase is already accomplished offline and focus on expediting the inference phase by replacing the centralized processing of Cloud with the distributed processing of Fog. In our approach, inference algorithms in AI are distributed to multiple layers of Fog networking, constructed from oneM2M Middle Nodes. We verify the performance improvement of our proposed distributed AI/Fog system by comparing it against a Cloud-centric system based on a use case of smart shopping mall.Item type:Item, EasyConnect: A Management System for IoT Devices and Its Applications for Interactive Design and Art(2015-12) ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;Lin, Yun-Wei ;Chih, Chang-Yen ;Li, Tzu-YiTai, Chia-ChunMany Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have been used in applications for money flow, logistics flow, people flow, interactive art design, and so on. To manage these increasing disparate devices and connectivity options, ETSI has specified end-to-end machine-to-machine (M2M) system architecture for IoT applications. Based on this architecture, we develop an IoT EasyConnect system to manage IoT devices. In our approach, an IoT device is characterized by its "features" (e.g., temperature, vibration, and display) that are manipulated by the network applications. If a network application handles the individual device features independently, then we can write a software module for each device feature, and the network application can be simply constructed by including these brick-like device feature modules. Based on the concept of device feature, brick-like software modules can provide simple and efficient mechanism to develop IoT device applications and interactions.Item type:Item, Efficient Device Group Management in oneM2M(2018-01-01) ;Chen, Hung-Chi ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceWith an increasingly large number of devices in the IoT/M2M systems, device management has become a very challenging task. This is especially true when an IoT/M2M server needs to handle each and every device individually via a gateway. In this research, we propose a new way of realizing "group management" defined in oneM2M to efficiently handle a large number of devices behind a gateway. To achieve this efficient group management for devices, we not only have to leverage the flexible group management in oneM2M but also extend OMA LWM2M device management with the group management capability. This paper reports our research results in integrating oneM2M group management and device management.Item type:Item, Enhancing Semantic Discovery in oneM2M with Direct Query(2018-01-01) ;Purnomo, Setiawan Wibowo ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系 ;電機資訊國際碩士學位學程Department of Computer ScienceSemantic information has been proven to be necessary in order to increase IoT interoperability by adding meaningful annotations to the data under exchange. The oneM2M as a global standard for IoT middleware has already supported semantic capabilities and allows semantic information to be annotated in its resources. Based on the added semantic information, oneM2M can support more effective resource discovery with semantic discovery. However, the oneM2M approach for semantic discovery is based on indirect query that requires pre-collection of all semantic information distributed in the resource tree while performing the discovery, thus results in very slow response. In this research, we propose a method of direct query to expedite the function of semantic discovery in oneM2M. In our approach, instead of storing the semantic information in the resource tree, we store the semantic information separately and centrally in a permanent RDF store. Our method significantly reduces the response time when performing semantic querying.Item type:Item, Extending IoT/M2M Scalability by Network Slicing(2018-01-01) ;de la Bastida, David ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系 ;電機資訊國際碩士學位學程Department of Computer ScienceIn this research, we have extended our initial effort in cloud-based IoT/M2M system scalability and developed a more robust solution by considering diverse QoS requirements from various IoT/M2M traffic patterns. Though our initial effort created a highly scalable architecture for IoT/M2M platforms based on OpenStack, it treated all IoT/M2M traffic without any discrepancy in the same underlying network (i.e. in the same network slice). Now, by leveraging software-defined networking in OpenStack and by using our traffic-slice optimal matching algorithm, we can direct different types of IoT traffic to feasible network slices in terms of QoS. Our experiments show that when compared with a system without network slicing, our scalability system performs better in terms of response time, power consumption, and computational cost.Item type:Item, Extending Scalability of IoT/M2M Platforms with Fog Computing(2018-01-01) ;Tseng, Chih-Lung ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceAs more and more IoT/M2M devices are connected to the Internet, the IoT/M2M platforms normally deployed in the Cloud are increasingly overloaded with a large amount of data traffic. Though more resources in the cloud may be allocated to alleviate such overloading issues, this research proposes the alternative of utilizing Fog computing to extend the scalability of IoT/M2M platforms in the cloud. The Fog is used not only to offload the over congested cloud but also to provide low latency required by critical applications. Our first step is to migrate oneM2M, a global IoT/M2M platform, to a Fog computing architecture in which the middle nodes of oneM2M are organized into a highly scalable hierarchical container-based Fog nodes. We then design a mechanism to dynamically scale in/out the serving instances of the middle nodes in order to make the whole IoT/M2M platform more scalable. The paper illustrates our system design and demonstrates our system scalability capacity using an industrial IoT (IIoT) use case. Finally, we compare the performance of our dynamic scaling mechanism with those based on a static and fixed pool of serving instances.Item type:Item, Gesture-based Control in a Smart Home Environment(2017-01-01) ;Alemuda, Fariz ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系 ;電機資訊國際碩士學位學程Department of Computer ScienceGesture is a convenient and natural way to control a smart home. The wearable device provides an excellent vehicle for getting a user's hand gesture. Recognition models for gestures can be divided into two types: user dependent and user independent. In this research, we propose a hybrid model that combines both user dependent and user independent models to distinguish a user's hand gestures. Our research investigates which model among three is the best approach for recognizing hand gestures. We employ ten hand gestures as the test cases for comparison. First, from a 6-axis wearable device we extract features based on the collected raw data of hand gestures. Then these extracted features are analyzed by a oneM2M-compliant platform to detect gestures based on Decision Tree and Logistic Regression algorithms. With a data set of over 7 users and 20 repetitions of tests for each user, we tested the effectiveness of recognition models and gesture detection algorithms. The results show that our proposed hybrid model could achieve the best accuracy with either of two detection algorithms.Item type:Item, High Scalability for Cloud-Based IoT/M2M Systems(2016) ;Cerritos, Eduardo ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;de la Bastida, David ;資訊工程學系電機資訊國際碩士學位學程International standards such as ETSI SmartM2M and oneM2M have defined a client-server model as the common service architecture for IoT/M2M systems. Moreover, the IoT/M2M servers are normally provisioned in a cloud environment. This paper proposes a highly scalable architecture for all such cloud-based IoT/M2M systems. The uniqueness of our architecture is the incorporation of a Master Node in the cloud that is aware of system resources and incoming traffic so that it not only can dynamically decide load balancing policies but also proactively react to scalability needs. When compared with other cloud implementations without such a Master Node, our proposed system achieves faster response time and lower energy consumption.Item type:Item, Improving Fast Velocity and Large Volume Data Processing in IoT/M2M Platforms(2016-01-01) ;Peng, Pohan ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn IoT/M2M platforms such as those defined by ETSI and oneM2M, all data collected by sensors are transmitted and stored in the platforms before they are processed. These data consume much of platform resources including network bandwidth, storage, CPU and memory. Nevertheless, in reality not all these data are needed by the IoT/M2M applications. In this paper, we propose to add a Streaming Data Preprocessor in the IoT/M2M platform to deal with fast velocity and large volume data from the IoT/M2M sensors. We experiment and compare the data processing capability of our enhanced platform with the one without a preprocessor based on an ETSI M2M-compliant platform OpenMTC. Our experiment was conducted for a factory management use case from which we show that our enhanced system demonstrates better performance.Item type:Item, Improving Utilization and Customer Satisfaction of Parking Space with M2M Communications(2015) ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;Chen, Haoru ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityThe shortage of parking spaces creates a challenging problem for both drivers and parking space operators. In this research, we implement a parking simulation system to study operators\' problems. The operator can use our method to evaluate different parking policies and find out the best policy. Furthermore, the operator can estimate the impact of smart parking system (SPS) on parking space management. An SPS not only tracks the number and locations of available parking spaces in a parking lot but also utilizes Machine-to-Machine communications (M2M) to provide drivers useful information. Based on the results, we are able to identify the best policy among all alternatives which achieves the highest satisfaction rate under the constraint of maintaining certain occupancy rate. Furthermore, our results show that the SPS can improve the satisfaction rate regardless scenarios under different assumptions.Item type:Item, IMU-Based Walking Workouts Recognition(2019-01-01) ;Wahjudi, Fanuel ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系 ;電機資訊國際碩士學位學程Department of Computer ScienceTo better accurately estimate the calories burnt during popular walking workouts, it is essential to detect the environment under which these workouts are conducted. To our best knowledge, no gait analysis studies have been done so far for such detection. This research addresses this problem by recognizing walking workouts under different environments based on the foot-mounted inertial sensor. Our objective is to recognize ten different workout activities including walking and brisk-walking under flat surface, ascending/descending staircase and upward/downward slope with no stairs. Our algorithm first identifies the extended foot-flat phase, then uses it as a boundary to extract key important features. Decision Tree, Random Forest and K-Nearest Neighbor machine learning algorithms are evaluated to decide which one works the best along with our algorithm.Item type:Item, Incorporating OMA Lightweight M2M Protocol in IoT/M2M Standard Architecture(2015) ;Putera, Christian Antonia Lusiarta ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系 ;電機資訊國際碩士學位學程Department of Computer ScienceIoT/M2M aims to integrate a large number of heterogeneous devices which are constantly required to be discovered and reconfigured in order to bring them up to date or to recover from their failures. A device management protocol enables the abstraction of an IoT/M2M device as a managed object to ease the management of the device. The M2M standards, such as ETSI and OneM2M, have adopted the use of OMA Lightweight M2M Device Management Protocol to manage and configure the IoT/M2M devices from the IoT/M2M platform. However, how to incorporate and do resource mapping of OMA LWM2M in the IoT/M2M standard architecture is not well addressed by those standards. In this paper, we present and analyze how to incorporate the OMA LWM2M in the IoT/M2M standard architecture. Through this seamless incorporation, an IoT/M2M application is enabled to manage IoT/M2M devices from the IoT/M2M service platform at a higher level of abstraction.Item type:Item, M2M-Enabled Real-Time Trip Planner(2014) ;Cerritos, Eduardo ;Lin, Fuchun Joseph ;資訊工程學系 ;電機資訊國際碩士學位學程Department of Computer ScienceUncertainty is a key factor that prevents a commuter from using public transportation system. More and more transportation agencies are incorporating real-time Trip Planners to empower commuters with opportune information. However, such systems require continuous status updates from the vehicles and involves expensive communication cost. In this paper we propose an architecture that takes advantage of Machine-to-Machine Communication concepts and provides a degree of intelligence to the vehicles, to alleviate unnecessary communication between the vehicles and the Trip Planner.
