Giving them the widest possible access to the education they need for their careers is a major goal of education administration. In this paper we present a pedagogical approach based on networked dynamic assessment to promote learning performance in the engineering field. Test results are assessed and in the light of any deficiencies revealed, recommendations about suitable learning material for individual needs are made. The focus of this paper is on engineering courses, in particular introductory electronics, and the proposed method of dynamic assessment is specially adapted to take account of the characteristics of engineering courses. The experimental results show that the proposed system has significant effects on the learning process of those participating.Item type:Item, Networked portfolio with real time learning monitoring system(2004) ;Lin, HT ;Liu, ZF ;Yuan, SM ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer SciencePortfolio is a process which systematically and purposefully collects artifacts or works created by students. These works and artifacts not only can be treated as a reference to improve students' learning process, but also as a learning outcome when passing into next learning stage or seeking a job. Assessment in such a way is called authentic assessment, since it assesses students' real learning performance. Portfolio process requires administrative staffs, students, and teachers to put effort on. To keep this process working, teachers take most of burden. In this paper we present a web-based system which will let teachers take burden as low as possible while provide most beneficial to students. This system has been installed at an Institute of Technology in Taiwan, the result shows positive and most of students appreciate functionality of this system.Item type:Item, Neural-network-based optimal fuzzy controller design for nonlinear systems(2005-09-01) ;Wu, SJ ;Chiang, HH ;Lin, HT ;Lee, TT電控工程研究所A neural-learning fuzzy technique is proposed for T-S fuzzy-model identification of model-free physical systems. Further, an algorithm with a defined modelling index is proposed to integrate and to guarantee that the proposed neural-based optimal fuzzy controller can stabilize physical systems; the modelling index is defined to denote the modelling-error evolution, and to ensure that the training data for neural learning can describe the physical system behavior very well; the algorithm, which integrates the neural-based fuzzy modelling and optimal fuzzy controlling process, can implement off-line modelling and on-line optimal control for model-free physical systems. The neural-fuzzy inference network is a self-organizing inference system to learn fuzzy membership functions and fuzzy-subsystems' parameters as data feeding in. Based on the generated T-S fuzzy models for the continuous mass-spring-damper system and Chua's chaotic circuit, discrete-time model car system and articulated vehicle, their corresponding fuzzy controllers are formulated from both local-concept and global-concept fuzzy approach, respectively. The simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed neural-based fuzzy modelling technique and of the integrated algorithm of neural-based optimal fuzzy control structure. The attribution of nonlinearity from fiber dispersion and laser chirping are also concerned. The dependences on the variations of parameters of rate equations are intensively investigated to figure out the dominant factor for CSO degradation. This approach explains quite well the experimental results and gives a clue of constructing the predistortion circuit with at least 10 dB improvement.Item type:Item, Nonlinear distortions and compensations of DFB laser diode in AM-VSB lightwave CATV applications(1996-11-01) ;Lin, HT ;Kao, YH ;電信工程研究所 ;電信研究中心Institute of Communications EngineeringThe nonlinear distortions of direct modulated laser diode applying to AM-VSB lightwave CATV systems are studied from the viewpoint of rate equations, A simple method for calculating composite second-order distortion (CSO) is proposed, which is denoted as the quasidynamic approach. In other words, if student does not learn something well, say integer addition in mathematics education, then poor learning performance of following consecutive course, say integer multiplication can be expected. Bloom advocated concept of mastery learning in 1960s [1]. Bloom claimed that giving sufficient learning time and good lecturing quality, almost every student learns everything taught by teacher well. In this manner, if student gets mastery at every learning unit, then it may solve problem stated above. The very important part of mastery learning is remedial learning. In remedial learning, teaching content will be tailored to meet each individual student's need. It will put a lot of burden on teacher if students who need remedial learning are not a few. In this paper, a web-based mastery learning system is introduced to make mastery learning process more practical and more effective. An experimental study has been done on an Institute of Technology in Taiwan. The result showed students appreciated this system, and almost all students got mastery based on predefined criteria.Item type:Item, The construction of Web-based portfolio system(2004) ;Lin, HT ;Liu, ZF ;Yuan, SM ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer SciencePortfolio-assessment refers to a process that involves the targeted collection of a student's work and the utilization of this piecemeal record to illustrate how hard a student works and the process by which said student grows and matures. A successful portfolio requires students. themselves, instructors, and peer spend considerable effort to participate activity. To facilitate portfolio process, a web-based portfolio system WebPor based on the concept of portfolio- and peer-assessment is presented in this paper. WebPor consists of a web-based peer-assessment segment called NetPea, a learning by discussion segment, and a web storage facility. The developed system has been implemented at an Institute of Technology in Taiwan, the result shows it achieves effectiveness significantly.
