Item type:Item, Hypericin-mediated selective photomodification of connective tissues(2017-01-01) ;Hovhannisyan, V. ;Hovhannisyan, A. ;Ghukasyan, V. ;Guo, H. W.Chen, Y. F.Hypericin (Hyp) has received attention due to its high phototoxicity against viruses and anti-tumor photoactivity. Using two-photon imaging, we demonstrated that Hyp induced photosensitized modification of collagen fibers in native tissues. Dynamics of photo-processes was monitored by time-lapse multiphoton imaging. We showed that Hyp-mediated processes in collagen tissues may be used for the selective modification of collagen fibers.Item type:Item, Photoactivation Studies of Zinc Porphyrin-Myoglobin System and Its Application for Light-Chemical Energy Conversion(2011) ;Chang, Chin-Hao ;Hu, Yi-Ting ;Lo, Chen-Fu ;Luo, LiyangLin, Hung-MingAn artificial zinc porphyrin-myoglobin- based photo-chemical energy conversion system, consisting of ZnPP-Mb or ZnPE1-Mb as a photosensitizer, NADP(+) as an electron acceptor, and triethanolamine as an electron donor, has been constructed to mimic photosystem I. The photoirradiated product is able to reduce a single-electron acceptor protein cytochrome c, but cannot catalyze the two-electron reduction of acetaldehyde by alcohol dehydrogenase, thus demonstrating a single electron transfer mechanism. Furthermore, the artificial system can bifunctionally promote oxidoredox reactions, depending on the presence or absence of a sacrificial electron donor, thus suggesting its potential application in electrochemical regeneration steps involved in chemical transformation and/or energy conversion.Item type:Item, Study on shear behavior of interbedded sandstone and mudstone slope using ring shear test(2007-01-01) ;Liao, Cheng-Jie ;Lin, Hung-Ming ;Lee, Der-Her ;Chen, Po-YingLiao, Jyh-JongAs slopes in the interbedded sandstone and mudstone formation are geologically characterized by proneness to landslides, past elaborations on the failure mechanism of such slopes were mostly confined to the fact that slope slides often occur after rainfalls when rainwater permeates through sandstone formation. Due to sharp difference in water permeability between sandstone and mudstone, the groundwater will accumulate on the interface of the interbedded formation, resulting in increased pore water pressures and reduced safety coefficients. In the process of slides with large displacement, however, change of mechanical properties on the sliding surface is a major factor that affects slope slides. For this purpose, the study aims to develop a ring shear test apparatus that can be applicable to weak rock materials to obtain their residual strength values under the condition of large displacement. The results show that ring shear tests are more effective in obtaining the actual residual strength of weak rock materials and complete post peak shear behaviors than direct shear tests. The results of this study also demonstrate that abrasion between grains of rock materials still continues till their residual strength values reach a stable condition, even though these rock materials are affected by the action of shear strength, and that the content of fine grained materials increases with the normal force in the shear zone.Item type:Item, The influence of different magnitudes and methods of applying preload on fusion and disc replacement constructs in the lumbar spine: a finite element analysis(2013-09-01) ;Zhong, Zheng-Cheng ;Hung, Chinghua ;Lin, Hung-Ming ;Wang, Ying-HuiHuang, Chang-HungIn a finite element (FE) analysis of the lumbar spine, different preload application methods that are used in biomechanical studies may yield diverging results. To investigate how the biomechanical behaviour of a spinal implant is affected by the method of applying the preload, hybrid-controlled FE analysis was used to evaluate the biomechanical behaviour of the lumbar spine under different preload application methods. The FE models of anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and artificial disc replacement (ADR) were tested under three different loading conditions: a 150N pressure preload (PP) and 150 and 400N follower loads (FLs). This study analysed the resulting range of motion (ROM), facet contact force (FCF), inlay contact pressure (ICP) and stress distribution of adjacent discs. The FE results indicated that the ROM of both surgical constructs was related to the preload application method and magnitude; differences in the ROM were within 7% for the ALIF model and 32% for the ADR model. Following the application of the FL and after increasing the FL magnitude, the FCF of the ADR model gradually increased, reaching 45% at the implanted level in torsion. The maximum ICP gradually decreased by 34.1% in torsion and 28.4% in lateral bending. This study concluded that the preload magnitude and application method affect the biomechanical behaviour of the lumbar spine. For the ADR, remarkable alteration was observed while increasing the FL magnitude, particularly in the ROM, FCF and ICP. However, for the ALIF, PP and FL methods had no remarkable alteration in terms of ROM and adjacent disc stress.
