Item type:Item, Aggregation of zinc protoporphyrin in anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) nanoporous environments(2006-02-01) ;Lin, JS ;Chen, YC ;Chen, CC ;Diau, EWGLiu, TFThe aggregation behavior of zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPP) inside nanoporous environments of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) has been investigated through observation of the variation of UV/visible absorption and emission spectra of the system. The Soret band in the absorption spectrum of ZnPP/AAO thin-film samples becomes much broader than that observed for ZnPP/THF solutions, and the relative intensity of the Q band is distinctly enhanced for the former. The broad Soret band overlaps the enhanced Q band increasingly as the degree of aggregation increases with increasing duration of immersion, with initial concentration of ZnPP/THF solutions, or with decreasing pore size of AAO nanotubes. A strong excitonic coupling between the Soret and Q transition dipoles causes the absorption spectrum of the ZnPP/AAO system to cover the entire visible spectral region. Emission spectra of ZnPP/AAO samples in the steady state contain multiple resolvable components assigned to monomer, dimer and higher aggregates. The observed systematic variation of emission spectra of ZnPP/AAO samples is consistent with the observation in absorption spectra of the system and reflects the significance of aggregation of ZnPP in a specific nanoporous environment.Item type:Item, Control of particle re-entrainment by wetting the exposed surface of dust samples(2003-10-01) ;Tsai, CJ ;Lee, CI ;Lin, JS ;Huang, CH環境工程研究所Experiments have been conducted in a Wind tunnel to measure the emission factor of re-entrained particles from a dry or wetted dust sample with a smooth or rough surface. Effects of wind velocities and water contents in the sample on the emission factor also were investigated. The results show that re-entrainment of particles can be controlled efficiently in a certain period of time when the surface watering density is between 60 and 80 g/m(2) at a wind velocity from 7 to 15 m/sec for both smooth and rough surfaces. After the effective period is elapsed, which depends on wind speeds and environmental conditions, water will eventually evaporate, and re-entrainment starts to occur again. The experimental water evaporation rates at different wind speeds are in good agreement with theoretical values. After watering for 210, 130, and 110 min at average wind velocities of 0, 2, and 4 m/sec, respectively, the dust sample must be replenished with water to avoid dust re-entrainment.Item type:Item, Crosstalk studies of in-plane switching mode under different pixel- and common-electrode configurations(2004-04-01) ;Lin, JS ;Yang, KH ;Chen, SH ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsIn thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD), particularly pixel-electrode configuration of in-plane switching (IPS) mode, crosstalk caused by capacitive coupling between pixel electrodes and data lines could result in image degradation. We derived the capacitive coupling ratio (CCR) of the IPS cell and analyzed the CCR of three conventional TFT-IPS pixel- and common-electrode structures to quantity the crosstalk properties. The effect of coupling voltage on electro-optics characteristics has been investigated. Our results showed that a common electrode placed adjacent to the data line could shield capacitive coupling between the data line and the pixel electrodes, and reduce CCR from 13% to 2.4% and crosstalk intensity ratio (CIR) from 21.2% to 3.9%. We also report the common-overlapping-pixel structure that not only increases the aperture ratio by 1.28 times but also reduces CCR from 13% to 9.1%.Item type:Item, Electrostatic charge measurement and charge neutralization of fine aerosol particles during the generation process(2006-04-01) ;Tsai, CJ ;Lin, JS ;Deshpande, CG ;Liu, LC環境工程研究所An aerosol charge analyzer has been constructed to measure the charge distribution of NaCl particles generated in the laboratory. A radioactive electrostatic charge neutralizer utilizing Po-210 was used to neutralize the electrostatic charge of the particles. The atomization technique was used to generate NaCl particles with diameters of 0.2 to 0.8 mu m, while the evaporation and condensation method was adopted to generate particles of 0.01 to 0.2 mu m in diameter. The experimental data demonstrates that the absolute average particle charge depends on the particle diameter, and is higher than that calculated by the Boltzmann charge equilibrium for particles within the range of 0.2 to 0.8 mu m. The charge increases with decreasing NaCl concentration. When these particles are neutralized using the Po-210 neutralizer, it is found that the electrostatic charge reaches the Boltzmann charge equilibrium. For 0.01. to 0.2 mu m NaCl particles generated using the evaporation and condensation method, test results show that the absolute average particle charge is higher than that calculated by the Boltzmann charge equilibrium for particles larger than 0.03 to 0.05 mu m in diameter, while it is lower than that predicted by the Fuchs theory [1], for particles smaller than 0.03 to 0.05 mu m. However, after charge neutralization, particles with diameter above 0.05 mu m reach the Boltzmann charge equilibrium condition, and the charges for particles with diameters of 0.010 to 0.05 mu m, agree well with Fuchs' theory.Item type:Item, Formulation of a family of sure-success quantum search algorithms(2004-09-01) ;Hsieh, JY ;Li, CM ;Lin, JS ;Chuu, DS電子物理學系In this work, we consider a family of sure-success quantum algorithms, which is grouped into even and odd members for solving a generalized Grover search problem. We prove the matching conditions for both groups and give the corresponding formulae for evaluating the iterations or oracle calls required in the search computation. We also present how to adjust the phase angles in the generalized Grover operator to ensure the sure-success if minimal oracle calls axe demanded in the search.Item type:Item, High-transmittance pixel- and common-electrode structures design for in-plane switching mode with low crosstalk(2004-07-01) ;Lin, JS ;Yang, KH ;Chen, SH ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsThe replacement of cathode ray tube (CRT) by thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) in TV applications requires the implementation of LC modes with wide viewing angles and excellent video display quality. Although the in-plane switching (IPS) mode has been known as an excellent technology for realizing wide viewing angles, it has a low aperture ratio that has been improved by Advanced Super-IPS (AS-IPS). In this paper, we propose a novel electrode structure that not only increases substantially the aperture ratio of the current AS-IPS but also reduces the crosstalk in terms of a capacitive coupling ratio from 1.2% to 0.05%.Item type:Item, Measurement of electrically tunable liquid-crystal Fabry-Perot interferometer using a monochromatic light source(1999-07-05) ;Lin, KC ;Lin, JS ;Chen, PL ;Chuang, WC光電工程學系We propose a novel technique to characterize an electrically tunable liquid-crystal Fabry-Perot interferometer. Only one usual set of a monochromatic light source and an optical power meter is needed. Various characteristic parameters were estimated based on the equivalent refractive index analysis and the measured voltage-dependent transmittance. The in-plane switching (IPS) mode has been known as an excellent technology for realizing a wide viewing angle for LCD-TV, but it has the drawback of a low aperture ratio. An advanced super-IPS (AS-IPS) structure with an organic insulator layer was invented to achieve a high aperture ratio with increasing manufacturing cost. In this paper, we proposed a simple method of analyzing the optimum thickness of the organic insulator layer for AS-IPS. We derived the capacitive coupling ratio (CCR) of the IPS cell and analyzed the delay time of the AS-IPS panel to quantify the crosstalk properties. Furthermore, we also analyzed our electrode structure (AS'-IPS), which not only increases substantially the aperture ratio over that of AS-IPS but also reduces the crosstalk using the same optimized thickness of the organic insulator layer.Item type:Item, Suppression of particle deposition in tube flow by thermophoresis(2004-10-01) ;Lin, JS ;Tsai, CJ ;Chang, CP ;環境工程研究所Institute of Environmental EngineeringSuppression of particle deposition from flow through a tube with circular cross-section was investigated numerically and experimentally for the case when the wall temperature exceeds that of the gas. Particle transport equations for convection, diffusion and thermophoresis were solved numerically to obtain particle concentration profiles and deposition efficiencies. The numerical results were validated by particle deposition efficiency measurements with monodisperse particles. For all particle sizes, the particle deposition efficiency was found to decrease with increasing tube wall temperature and gas flow rate. Particle deposition was suppressed completely when the tube wall was heated to a certain temperature slightly above that of the gas flow. An empirical expression has been developed to predict the dimensionless temperature difference needed for zero deposition efficiency in a laminar tube flow for a given dimensionless deposition parameter. When both flow and temperature are fully developed (combined fully developed), present results agree with previous theories for the long tube where the flow temperature approaches that of the wall. When the flow is fully developed and temperature is developing, it is found that only near the thermal entrance region (or temperature jump region) of the tube the deposition efficiency is slightly higher than the combined fully developed case (flow and temperature), while the deposition efficiency remains the same for the long tube. When both flow and temperature are developing (or combined developing), the deposition efficiency is about twice that of the combined fully developed case for the long tube and is much higher near the entrance of the tube. Non-dimensional equations are developed empirically to predict the thermophoretic deposition efficiency in combined developing and combined fully developed cases under laminar flow conditions. In the previous study by Romay et al., theoretical thermophoretic deposition efficiencies in turbulent flow regime do not agree well with the experimental data. In this study, particle deposition efficiencies due to other deposition mechanisms such as electrostatic deposition for particles in Boltzmann charge equilibrium and laminar and turbulent diffusions were carefully assessed so that the deposition due to thermophoresis alone could be measured accurately. As a result, the semiempirical equation developed by Lin and Tsai in laminar flow regime and the theoretical equation of Romay et al. in turbulent flow regime are found to fit the experimental data of thermophoretic deposition efficiency very well with the differences of less than 1.0% in both flow regimes. It is also found that Talbot's formula for the thermophoretic coefficient is accurate while Waldmann's free molecular formula is only applicable when Kn is greater than about 3.0.
