Item type:Item, Bit-error bounds for trellis-coded MPSK in mixed fading channels(1997-11-01) ;Lin, WC ;Su, YT ;交大名義發表 ;電信工程研究所National Chiao Tung UniversityBit-error probability (BEP) bounds of trellis-coded MPSK systems over two classes of mixed fading channels are studied, These two classes of channels have been proposed as candidate models for mobile satellite communications, The first class consists of slow and frequency-nonselective fading channels whose output field strengths follow a probability law characterized by a convex combination of Rician and Rayleigh/lognormal distributions, For the other class of fading channels, the received signal amplitude has a convex combination of Rician and Rician/lognormal distributions. We analyze performance bounds for trellis codes that belong to the class of either geometrically uniform codes (GUC's) or quasi-regular codes (QRC's), Receivers with either ideal channel state information (CSI) or no CSI at all are considered, We examine asymptotic behaviors of these codes and identify key design parameters, Numerical results are provided to illustrate and compare the BEP performances of various codes and to validate the usefulness of the asymptotic analysis.Item type:Item, Differential matched filter architecture for spread spectrum communication systems(1996-08-15) ;Lin, WC ;Liu, KC ;Wang, CK ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThe authors present a new digital matched filter architecture: digital differential matched filter (DDMF), that employs novel schemes to reduce the number of multiplications and accumulations (M and A). Theoretical analysis shows that the DDMF saves half of the M and A hardware in comparison with the conventional filter, and maintains identical processing gain. This makes the proposed DDMF more suitable for direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) communication systems and low power VLSI implementations.Item type:Item, Differential matched filter architecture for spread spectrum communication systems(1996-08-15) ;Lin, WC ;Liu, KC ;Wang, CK ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringThe authors present a new digital matched filter architecture: digital differential matched filter (DDMF), that employs novel schemes to reduce the number of multiplications and accumulations (M and A). Our results indicate that the recombination lifetime of donor-bound-exciton transition of pure GaN exhibits strong dependence on temperature. When In is doped into GaN, the recombination lifetime decreases sharply from 68 ps to 30 ps, irregardless of measured temperature and In doping concentration. The cause for this appearance is not clear at present. It might be related to the isoelectronic In impurity itself in GaN, which creates shallow energy levels that predominate the recombination process.Item type:Item, Gallium K-edge EXAFS study of GaN : Mg films(2000) ;Pan, YC ;Wang, SF ;Lee, WH ;Lin, WCShu, CKGa K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurement was employed to investigate the local structure of GaN:Mg films grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) with various Cp,Mg dopant flow rates using both in-plane and out-of-plane polarization modes of X-ray. The near edge absorption spectra were found to depend on X-ray polarization strongly for undoped GaN sample and weakly to minutely for heavily Mg-doped and amorphous films. The results indicate Mg incorporation modifies the local structure around the absorber Ga atom and, hence, alters the molecular orbital electron transition of GaN sample. EXAFS analysis showed both vacancy and Mg-interstitial defects contribute to the reduction of coordination numbers along the hexagonal c-axis of GaN:Mg film.Item type:Item, Hemocompatibility and anaphylatoxin formation of protein-immobilizing polyacrylonitrile hemodialysis membrane(2005-04-01) ;Liu, TY ;Lin, WC ;Huang, LY ;Chen, SYYang, MCPlasma proteins were covalently immobilized onto polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane to evaluate the hemocompatibility and anaphylatoxin formation. This is used as a model to study the effect of protein-adsorption on the blood-contacting response of hemodializing membranes. The proteins used were either platelet-adhesion-promoting collagen (COL) or platelet-adhesion-inhibiting human serum albumin (HSA). The microstructure and characterization of the protein-immobilizing PAN membranes were evaluated by Coomassie dye assay, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and water contact angle measurement. PAN-HSA membrane improved not only hemocompatibility including less platelet adhesion, longer blood coagulation times, and higher thrombin inactivity level, but also induced lower complement activation. On the other hand, PAN COL membrane exhibited blood incompatibility, although induced less increase of C3, C4 antigens of serum. Overall results of this study demonstrated that the immobilization of HSA onto the surface of PAN membrane would be beneficial to improve the hemocompatibility and to reduce the anaphylatoxin formation during hemodialysis. What the underlying mechanisms are and how they work along visual pathways are still problems largely unresolved, which, receive a great deal of attention in various fields of vision research such as neurophysiology, psychophysics and computer vision, etc.. In this paper, via emulating the behaviors of ganglion cells (in the retinas of our eyes) of center-on and center-off receptive fields, the authors would like to show that, from computational perspective, the interactions between both types of receptive fields may play a role that is partially contributory to holistic visual perception: as indicated by many test cases of ours wherein such visual targets as animals in the wild and human faces are holistically picked up, without the use of models of animal shapes and of human face.Item type:Item, Isoelectronic As doping effects on the optical characteristics of GaN films grown by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition(2000-10-30) ;Huang, HY ;Lin, WC ;Lee, WH ;Shu, CKLiao, KCWe have studied the As doping effects on the optical characteristics of GaN films by time-integrated photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence. When As is incorporated into the film, the localized defect levels and donor-acceptor pair transition become less resolved. The recombination lifetime of neutral-donor-bound exciton (I-2) transition in undoped GaN increases with temperature as T-1.5. However, the I-2 recombination lifetime in As-doped GaN first decreases exponentially from 98 to 41 ps between 12 and 75 K, then increases gradually to 72 ps at 250 K. Such a difference is related to the isoelectronic As impurities in GaN, which generate nearby shallow levels that dominate the recombination process. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. The miscibility of PLLA/PTAT blends was studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermal mechanical analysis (TMA) in a tensile mode. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement was carried out. The surface microstructure and tensile properties of the blend membranes were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and tensile tester. It was concluded that PLLA/PTAT blends should be partially miscible for all ranges of compositions. Higher roughness and porosity were observed for the blend containing 50% PTAT, suggesting more phase separation occurred. The DSC analysis showed that the fusion enthalpy and crystallinity (X-c) of the PLLA-rich phase decreased with increasing PTAT content. Solidification process strongly suggested that the crystallization rate was accelerated by blending with 25% PTAT content, which served as the nucleation agent. Furthermore, the crystallization rate coefficient (CRC) depended on the blending miscibility and cooling rate in the non-isothermal crystallization process. Besides, PTAT addition could be proved to enhance the thermal stability and elongation of resulting blend membranes, even superior to those properties of poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). Taking data modulation and timing uncertainty into account and using the generalized maximum likelihood (GML) or maximum likelihood (ML) detection approaches, we derive optimal detectors in the sense of Bayes or Neyman-Pearson and propose various suboptimal detectors. A simple systematic means for their realization is suggested and the numerical performance of these detectors is presented. We also compare their performance with that of the noncoherent combining (NC1) detector that had been proposed to serve the same need. Numerical results show that even the proposed suboptimal detectors can outperform the NC1 detector in most cases of interest.Item type:Item, Optimal and suboptimal noncoherent detectors for PN code acquisition in the presence of data modulation(1998) ;Su, YT ;Lin, WC ;Wu, RC ;電信工程研究所Institute of Communications EngineeringNoncoherent detectors for use in acquiring data-modulated direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS/SS) signals are considered in this paper. Taking data modulation into account, we examine maximum likelihood (ML) and generalized maximum likelihood (GML) detection structures and then derive suboptimal detectors. We call one of the suboptimal detector as noncoherent partially matched filter (PMF) as it matches only part of the family of legitimate data patterns, We compare the detector operating characteristic (DOC) performance of the PM filter and that of the noncoherent combining (NC) detector that had been proposed to serve the same need. Although the PM filter requires a little more computing it does give better performance.Item type:Item, Structure study of GaN : Mg films by X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy(2001) ;Pan, YC ;Wang, SF ;Lee, WH ;Lin, WCChiang, CIX-ray absorption near-edge fine structure (XANES) spectroscopy from N K-edge measurement was employed to examine the crystal structure of metallorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) grown Mg-doped GaN (GaN:Mg) films. The result showed that Mg doping induced crystal stacking faults to occur at the film surface causing a fraction of hexagonal phase to transform into cubic phase. As a consequence of this, XANES spectra of the films were found to vary with the dopant concentration and to lose pure hexagonal character when examined with the incident angle theta of the X-ray beam. Spectral characteristic variation between the two phases allows us to estimate the phase composition of the samples. The trend of increasing cubic phase component in dopant concentration is consistent with the observed Normaski optical micrograph. The hemocompatibility of the resulting membranes was evaluated based on human plasma proteins adsorption, platelet adhesion, thrombus formation, and blood coagulation time. The PAN/PVDF blends exhibited partial miscibility according to the inward shifting of their two glass transition temperatures. The microstructures of blend membranes examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) indicated that the roughness increased with the PVDF content, and the phase separation was too severe to form a membrane when the PVDF content was more than 30%. The water contact angle of PAN/PVDF blend membranes increased with the PVDF content. By blending with 20wt% apolar PVDF the adsorption of blood proteins could be reduced, and hence the platelet adhesion and thrombus formation was also reduced. However, when the PVDF content was 30 wt%, severe thrombogenicity was observed due probably to the more porous structure of blend membrane. These results demonstrated that the hemocompatibility would be improved for PAN/PVDF blend membranes with appropriate hydrophilicity and roughness. Galactosyl donors of sulfide and phosphite types bearing benzoyl protecting groups of 4- and 6OH underwent glycosylation in excellent alpha-anomeric selectivity. A variety of alpha-galactosyl, fucosyl and glucosyl ceramides and serine-type lipids were prepared, and their activities involved in the proliferation of mouse splenocytes and the expression of cytokines were elucidated. Besides alpha-galactosyl ceramides, a galactosyl serine-type lipid also exhibited substantial effect on the expression of cytokines IFN-gamma and IL-4. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. One basic observation used in our work is that the lattice structure of a dynamic NRT remains invariant despite its drastic geometry or appearance variations. On the other hand, dynamic NRT imposes special computational challenges to the state of the art tracking algorithms: including highly ambiguous correspondences, occlusions, and drastic illumination and appearance variations. Our tracking algorithm takes advantage of the topological invariant property of the dynamic NRT by combining a global lattice structure that characterizes the topological constraint among multiple textons and an image observation model that handles local geometry and appearance variations. Without any assumptions on the types of motion, camera model or lighting conditions, our tracking algorithm can effectively capture the varying underlying lattice structure of a dynamic NRT in different real world examples, including moving cloth, underwater patterns and marching crowd.
