Item type:Item, A cascade add/drop transceiver structure to solve the optical beat interference problem in subcarrier-multiplexed passive optical networks(2000-04-05) ;Lin, WP ;Kao, MS ;Chi, S ;電信工程研究所光電工程學系A cascade add/drop transceiver (CAT) structure in a star-ring architecture for subcarrier-multiplexed passive optical networks (SCM-PONs) is demonstrated to overcome the optical beat interference (OBI) problem. The proposed CAT structure is a simple, reliable, and feasible approach for SCM-PONs. Our experimental results reveal that the CAT structure in a ring can completely eliminate the OBI problem, and maintain a good transmission quality. The embedded FBGA in the external cavity loop encodes the input pulses both temporally and spectrally. Before feeding back into the FP-LD, the encoded optical pulses propagate the FBGA with reverse direction and are again temporally combined. With the corporation of the variable fiber delay line, the limitation of the pulse rate by the fixed external cavity length is removed and makes the scheme more flexible. The output with sidemode suppression ratio of more than 20 dB has been obtained. With three fiber Bragg gratings on the FBGA, we demonstrate the encoded chip rate of 1.425 GHz under the driving radio frequency of 475 MHz. It is proved that a different codeword can be generated by simply reconfiguring the encoder without changing the rest of the experimental setup.Item type:Item, A DWDM/SCM self-healing architecture for broad-band subscriber networks(2003-02-01) ;Lin, WP ;Kao, MS ;Chi, S ;電信工程研究所光電工程學系A high-capacity dense wavelength-division multiplexing/subcarrier multiplexing (DWDM/SCM) network based on a self-healing star-bus-ring architecture (SBRA) is proposed and demonstrated. This architecture has a star subnet on the upper level to be a high-capacity infrastructure for the network, several bus subnets on the middle level to offer broad-band channels for multiwavelength signals, and many ring subnets on the lower level to serve a number of nodes. We design remote nodes and bidirectional wavelength add-drop multiplexers (WADMs) by using simple optical switches to reconfigure the network under link failure. We further employ M-quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) and frequency shift-keyed (FSK) signals for downstream and upstream channels, respectively. The SBRA ensures an optical-beat-interference-free (OBI-free) and high-reliability optical network. Finally, we set up an experimental network to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed architecture.Item type:Item, A novel architecture for dense wavelength-division multiplexing/subcarrier multiplexing networks(2002-01-05) ;Lin, WP ;Kao, MS ;Chi, S ;電信工程研究所光電工程學系We propose and demonstrate a new survivable dense wavelength-division multiplexing/subcarrier multiplexing (DWDM/SCM) network based oil the star-bus-ring architecture (SBRA). This architecture ensures an OBI-free optical network and can serve tremendous subscribers, In addition, remote nodes and bidirectional wavelength add/drop multiplexers (B-WADMs) are designed by, using simple optical switches to reconfigure the network under link failure. We further set up an experimental network to demonstrate the feasibility, of the proposed architecture. Moreover, we also propose an upstream injection-locked longitudinal mode scheme in a remote node to offer a simple ROF interface. Experimental results demonstrate that these technologies can provide robust and reliable characteristics for large radio terminals.Item type:Item, Generation of wavelength-tunable optical pulses using EDFA as external-injection light source and amplifier for Fabry-Perot laser diode(2004-11-01) ;Peng, PC ;Peng, WR ;Lin, JH ;Lin, WPChi, SWe propose and experimentally demonstrate a system for the generation of wavelength-tunable pulses using a gain-switched Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). The EDFA is used as both an external-injection light source and an amplifier for the FPLD. The wavelength tuning is achieved by a tunable filter. The optical sidemode suppression ratio of this system is better than 32 dB over the wavelength-tunable range of 34.5 nm. Moreover, the repetition frequency is 2000 MHz, and the pulsewidth is between 49.3 and 65.3 ps. The whole system is simple and can be easily constructed.Item type:Item, Improved fiber Bragg grating array OFFH-CDMA system using a novel frequency-overlapping multigroup method(2006-03-01) ;Peng, WR ;Lin, WP ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsThe authors propose a novel frequency-overlapping multigroup scheme for a passive all-optical fast-frequency hopped code-division multiple-access (OFFH-CDMA) system based on fiber Bragg grating array (FBGA). In the conventional scheme, the users are assigned those codes constructed on the nonoverlapping frequency slots, and therefore the bandgaps; between the adjacent gratings are wasted. To make a more efficient use of the optical spectrum, the proposed scheme divided the users into several groups, and assigned the codes, which interleaved to each other to the different groups. In addition to the higher utilization of the spectrum, the interleaved nature of the frequency allocations of different groups will make the groups less correlated and, hence, lower the multiple-access interference (MAI). The corresponding codeset and its constraints for this new scheme are also developed and analyzed. The performance of the system in terms of the correlation functions and bit error rate (BER) are given in both the conventional and the proposed schemes. The numerical results show that, with the multigroup scheme, performance is much improved compared to the conventional scheme.Item type:Item, Star-bus-ring architecture for fiber Bragg grating sensors(2004-10-01) ;Peng, PC ;Lin, WP ;Chi, S ;光電工程學系Department of PhotonicsA star-bus-ring architecture for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors is proposed and demonstrated. The FBG survivability and capacity of a multipoint sensor system are enhanced by adding remote nodes and 2 x 2 optical switches to the star-bus-ring architecture. Moreover, to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the sensor system, we adopt a FBG laser scheme in constructing our proposed star-bus-ring architecture. The fiber laser adopted in this system resulted in an SNR of more than 50 dB for the sensor system. Finally, the network survivability is experimentally verified.Item type:Item, The modified star-ring architecture for high-capacity subcarrier multiplexed passive optical networks(2001-01-01) ;Lin, WP ;Kao, MS ;Chi, S ;電信工程研究所光電工程學系A modified star-ring architecture (MSRA) consisting of a star network on the upper level and many concatenated ring subnets on the lower level is proposed for subcarrier multiplexed passive optical network (SCM-PON), The upper level star network ensures high network capacity and its weakness in reliability is overcome by the concatenated ring subnets with self-healing capabilities, The self-healing function can be performed at remote nodes (RNs) by using optical switches (OS) to reconfigure the ring subnets if any link fails, Moreover, we design the cascade add/drop transceiver (CAT) structure in the lower level ring subnets to completely eliminate the optical beat interference (OBI) problem and achieve an OBI-free optical network. Finally, we set up an experimental network to demonstrate the feasibility of this cost-effective survivable structure.
