Item type:Item, A Bandwidth-Efficient INT System for Tracking the Rules Matched by the Packets of a Flow(2019-01-01) ;Wang, Shie-Yuan ;Chen, Yo-Ru ;Li, Jun-Yi ;Hu, Hsien-WenTsai, Jia-AnTracking the rules matched by the packets of a flow when they traverse multiple switches in a network is very important and useful. In this paper, we design and implement a bandwidth-efficient In-Band Network Telemetry (INT) system that can track the rules matched by the packets of a flow in real time or in the past. We have evaluated the real performance of our system on a testbed composed of several hardware P4 switches. Our experimental results show that the system works correctly and its traffic reduction scheme can reduce the rate of generated INT reports by a factor of 39, 394, 2,055, or even up to 12,500, depending on the type of network states monitored and the threshold used to filter out less important INT reports.Item type:Item, A cache approach for supporting life-time UPT number(1996-06-01) ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceA life-time Universal Personal Telecommunication (UPT) number allows a user to change the Personal Communications service provider without changing his/her UPT number. Since a translation from the life-time UPT number to a routing address must be done for every call placed, it is essential to make this process efficient. Two general approaches are the table lookup method and the database query method. The life-time UPT number can be easily implemented in the database query method. However, the UPT-routing address translation cost in the database query method is much higher than in the table lookup method. Address translation can be done efficiently in the table lookup method, but pointer forwarding is required to support a life-time UPT number. To reduce the pointer forwarding cost, we modify the table lookup method by adding a cache at each cellular switch (in Taiwan, the number of cellular switches that need to equip with the caches is 8 for AMPS and 7 for GSM). We show that the cache scheme can remove most pointer forwarding operations for an originating switch if some PCS users are accessed more frequently than others.Item type:Item, A Cache Scheme for Femtocell Reselection(2010-01-01) ;Lee, Hsin-Yi ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn a cellular network, femto base stations may be deployed to improve indoor coverage that cannot be accommodated by the macro base stations. However, to switch from the macro-tier to the femto-tier, a user equipment may be required to scan the whole femto radio spectrum, which is an expensive operation. We propose a cache scheme that may significantly speed up the macro-tier to femto-tier switching.Item type:Item, A chapter preloading mechanism for e-reader in mobile environment(2013-05-01) ;Chuang, Chen-Yuan ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;Ren, Zhihao Julie ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceE-book is a fast growing service for mobile Internet. A user reads e-books through an e-reader that could be a dedicated reading device or a mobile application on the smartphones or the tablets. With content protection of Digital Right Management (DRM), e-books take longer chapter loading time due to necessary data decryption. This paper propose a mechanism that preloads a small number of chapters into the buffer for DRM-protected e-books. When the user reads a chapter in the buffer, our solution reduces the user waiting time without affecting existing content protection. We also analyze the buffer replacement cost and effects of the limited buffer resource. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. Because of the small coverage of a small cell, there are usually a large number of small cells deployed in the mobile network, and it is likely that there are no User Equipments (UEs) in a small cell. A small cell may be idle most of the time and waste energy. In this paper, we propose a Connection-Driven (CD) mechanism for energy saving of small cells, where a small cell in the sleep mode is woken up when there are UEs (that have ongoing dedicated bearers) within its service area. We propose an analytical model and simulation experiments to investigate the performance of the CD mechanism.Item type:Item, A dynamic paging scheme for long-term evolution mobility management(2015-03-01) ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;Liou, Ren-Huang ;Chang, Chun-Ting ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn long-term evolution, the service area is partitioned into several tracking areas (TAs), which comprise one or more cells (the radio coverages of base stations). The TAs are grouped into TA list (TAL). When an incoming call arrives, the network attempts to connect to the user equipment (UE) by paging the cells in the UE's TAL, which may incur large paging traffic that significantly consumes the limited radio resources. To resolve this issue, this paper proposes a dynamic paging scheme that determines the paging sequence of cells in real time according to the UE movement and call behavior. We compare the performance of the dynamic paging with that of the previously proposed Cell-TA-TAL (CTT) paging. Our study indicates that the dynamic paging outperforms the CTT paging when movement pattern is regular and the UE moves frequently. During NOMS content transmission, data may be lost. Three file repair schemes were proposed to retransmit the corrupted MBMS data. However, these schemes may introduce extra data traffic or signaling overheads. This paper proposes the Reuse Bearer Service (RBS) file repair scheme to resolve this issue. We analyze the four file repair schemes by analytical models and simulation experiments. This paper shows that the proposed RBS scheme may significantly outperform the previously proposed schemes.Item type:Item, A Handset-Based Solution for Reducing International Roaming Costs(2011-05-01) ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;Liou, Ren-Huang ;Chen, Yuan-Kai ;Gan, Chai-Hien資訊工程學系Today's mobile service providers allow their users to receive telecom services when they roam to other countries. However, international roaming is very expensive. In the standard mobile call setup procedure, a call from the visited country to a roaming user in that country results in two international calls. This phenomenon is referred to as the tromboning effect. Several third-party solutions have been proposed to resolve the tromboning problem by replacing two international calls with two local calls. These solutions require one or more gateways for call re-routing. This paper proposes a handset-based solution that does not need to add/modify network nodes in the existing mobile telecom systems. Analytic modeling and simulation experiments indicate that our solution is effective in international trunk elimination and call setup signaling.Item type:Item, A Key Caching Mechanism for Reducing WiMAX Authentication Cost in Handoff(2009-10-01) ;Hsu, Shih-Feng ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceThe IEEE 802.1X is utilized in mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) authentication. This procedure incurs a long delay in WiMAX handoff. To resolve this issue, this paper proposes a key caching mechanism to eliminate the nonnecessary IEEE 802.1X authentication cost in WiMAX handoff. This mechanism is investigated through analytic and simulation modeling. Our study indicates that the key caching scheme can effectively speed up the handoff process.Item type:Item, A Local IP Access Mechanism for VoIP Service in LTE Home eNodeB Systems(2013) ;Chang, Chia-Hsuan ;Chao, Hsi-Lu ;Liu, Chia-Lung ;Huang, Kuei-LiLin, Yi-BingThe need for multimedia communication through wireless media brings development of 4G cellular wireless networks. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is one of 4G standards and specified in 3GPP. In an LTE system, home base station (HeNB) is designed for indoor usage. Since packets are always routed back to the core network before to destination, if two user equipments (UEs) stay in the same HeNB, the routing path is detour and results in longer packet delivery delay, jitters and thus lower data throughput. As a result, the idea of local IP Access (LIPA) was drawn and two solutions have been proposed. However, the two solutions would suffer from poor voice quality in a VoIP application. We propose a novel solution which establishes an additional data radio bearer (DRB) between UE and HeNB to detect local packets. Once local packets are detected, the data radio bearer is then responsible for local packet delivery. Simulation results show that our method outperforms the other two solutions in terms of packet delivery delay and mean opinion score (MOS).Item type:Item, A Multi-link Mechanism for Heterogeneous Radio Networks(2014-06-01) ;Yang, Shun-Neng ;Lin, Yung-Chun ;Gan, Chai-Hien ;Lin, Yi-BingWu, Chien-TingNowadays, smart mobile devices drive the mobile traffic growth rapidly. Most smart mobile devices are equipped with multiple radio network interfaces, such as High Speed Packet Access (HSPA), Long Term Evolution (LTE), and Wi-Fi. Therefore, integration of multiple networks is a viable solution to fulfill traffic offloading and the Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirement of data usage for mobile users. In this paper, we propose a multi-link mechanism to handle the radio network selection and switching between LTE and Wi-Fi networks. A Multi-Link Adaptor (MLA) and a Multi-Connection Manager (MCM) are proposed for the User Equipment (UE) and the core network, respectively, to handle the multi-link mechanism. The applications executed in the UEs do not need to be modified under the proposed approach. The MLA maintains a QoS class table and a routing table for the network selection procedure and uses the GPRS Tunneling Protocol-Control plane (GTP-C) control messages to execute network switching. In the future, we will measure the throughput of the multi-link network and the switch delay between the heterogeneous radio networks.Item type:Item, A multi-RAT bandwidth aggregation mechanism with software-defined networking(2016-02) ;Yang, Shun-Neng ;Ho, Shu-Wei ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;Gan, Chai-Hien資訊工程學系The population of smart mobile devices drives the mobile traffic growth rapidly. To deal with the traffic explosion, heterogeneous radio network integration is considered as a cost-effective solution for mobile operators to reduce network congestion. With the coverage overlapping of various wireless networks (e.g., LTE and Wi-Fi), we can use multiple networks to transfer different services simultaneously. In this paper, we integrate the multiple radio access technology (multi-RAT) with software-defined networking (SDN) to make the multi-RAT network more programmable, dynamically manageable and adaptable. The analytic model and performance evaluation show that our mechanism can significantly reduce the response times when the multi-RAT network traffic is unbalanced, where the throughput degradation of adapting our mechanism is 4.15% on average. The Integration of multiple radio access technologies is a viable solution for mobile operators to fulfill users\' data usage. In this paper, we consider the interwork issue for the LTE and Wi-Fi integration network. Based on the GPRS Tunneling Protocol (GTP), a multi-link switch approach is proposed to solve the seamless handover and cooperating issues between LTE and Wi-Fi networks. The performance results show that the average switch delay is slight, which is efficient to support most of real-time application services, such as VOIP service and interactive games.Item type:Item, A study on Shared and non-Shared Billing for Mobile Service(2015) ;Wu, Jo-Ching ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;Lin, Yun-Wei ;Wang, Yung-ChingLin, Bo-TingIn this paper, we study on the price comparison between shared plan and non-shared plan for mobile service. A non-shared data plan is a traditional data plan for a single user with a limited monthly data allowance. A shared data plan allows a user to add different devices to one inclusive plan and receive one bill at the end of every month, which the monthly data allowance is shared by a group of users across multiple devices. Each data plan is charged by a fixed price for a monthly data allowance and there will be an extra charge if a user consumes more than the monthly data allowance. Therefore, the charged price is affected by the user\'s behaviors. We study the users\' behaviors by observing the measured data from Chunghwa Telecom and derive stochastic models for shared plan and non-shared plan to evaluate monthly prices based on different users\' behaviors. We recommend the most appropriate plan for a group of users based on users\' behaviors. On the other hand, mobile operators can attract more customers and earn more profit. We show that the shared plan is a \'win-win\' plan for users and operators.Item type:Item, A Weakly Consistent Scheme for IMS Presence Service(2009-07-01) ;Chen, Whai-En ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;Liou, Ren-Huang ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIP Multimedia Core Network Subsystem (IMS) provides presence service for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UNITS). In IMS, the presence server is responsible for notifying an authorized watcher of the updated presence information. If the updates occur more frequently than the accesses of the watcher, the presence server will generate many notifications. This paper uses a weakly consistent scheme (called delayed update) to reduce the notification traffic. In this scheme, a delayed timer is defined to control the notification rate. We propose an analytic model and simulation experiments to investigate the performance of delayed update. The study indicates that delayed update can effectively reduce the notification traffic without significantly degrading the valid access probability.Item type:Item, Active Location Reporting for Emergency Call in UMTS IP Multimedia Subsystem(2009-01-01) ;Tsai, Meng-Hsun ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;Wang, Hsiao-Han ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceThe IP Multimedia Core Network Subsystem (IMS) provides multimedia services for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). For example, multiple small packets can share a single copy of common Ethernet/IP/UDP headers to reduce the percentage of network bandwidth spent on transmitting headers. In the past, packet aggregation and disaggregation were done by a server CPU or a switch CPU, resulting in low throughputs. In this paper, we design and implement packet aggregation and disaggregation functions in the packet processing pipelines of P4 switches. Our novel designs allow packets with various sizes of payload to be aggregated and disaggregated purely in the data plane of a P4 switch. Experimental results show that the achieved throughputs of our aggregation and disaggregation methods can reach 100 Gbps, which is the line rate of the used P4 switch.Item type:Item, AgriTalk: IoT for Precision Soil Farming of Turmeric Cultivation(2019-06-01) ;Chen, Wen-Liang ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;Lin, Yun-Wei ;Chen, RobertLiao, Jyun-KaiThis paper proposes AgriTalk, an inexpensive Internet of Things (IoT) platform for precision farming of soil cultivation. We conduct experiments on turmeric cultivation, which indicates that the turmeric quality is significantly enhanced through AgriTalk. Specifically, the curcumin concentration is up to 4500-5500 mg/100 g, which is five times more than existing products. We demonstrate how to intuitively configure the connections between the sensors and the actuators with the desired farming intelligence, and to effectively maintain AgriTalk for precision farming. We conduct measurement, analytic analysis, and simulation experiments to investigate the IoT message delays of AgriTalk. This paper indicates that the delays for automatic control and automatic-manual control switching with long distances (more than 30 km) are very short (less than 0.2 s) and AgriTalk can easily respond to quick and dynamic change of the field environment conditions in soil cultivation.Item type:Item, An effective IPv4-IPv6 translation mechanism for SIP applications in next generation networks(2010-08-01) ;Chen, Whai-En ;Huang, Ya-Lin ;Lin, Yi-Bing ;資訊工程學系Department of Computer ScienceIn a next generation network, the IPv6-enabled IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) network may connect to an IPv4 network. When an IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack user equipment (UE) initiates a call by sending an IPv6 SIP INVITE message to an IPv4-only user agent (UA), the call cannot be established correctly. To resolve this problem, the IMS-application layer gateway solution, the redirect solution, and the interactive connectivity establishment solution have been proposed. In this paper, we propose an effective solution where only the IPv6 INVITE message is translated into an IPv4 INVITE message. Upon receipt of the IPv4 200 OK message replied from the IPv4-only UA, the dual-stack UE learns that the correspondent UA supports IPv4-only and utilizes IPv4 instead of IPv6 to send the subsequent SIP messages and real-time transport protocol (RTP) packets. The proposed solution is compared with the existing solutions in terms of network node modification, call setup complexity, and RTP transmission latency. Our study indicates that the proposed solution outperforms the other three solutions in the call setup and the RTP transmission. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
