Item type:Item, Energy transfer within small molecule/conjugated polymer blends enhances photovoltaic efficiency(2017-09-14) ;Lin, Yu-Che ;Su, Yu-Wei ;Li, Jia-Xing ;Lin, Bo-HsienChen, Chung-HaoIn this study, we employed ternary blends capable of energy transfer-a synthesized high-band-gap small molecule (SM-4OMe) comprising benzodithiophene (BDT) and rhodanine units (a molecular structure that was designed for energy transfer), a low-band-gap polymer (PTB7-TH) comprising BDT and thienothiophene units with desired packing orientation, and a fullerene-as active layers for singlejunction photovoltaic devices. The light absorption of the small molecule and the polymer was partially complementary, owing to their band gap difference, thereby broadening the absorption spectrum of solar light while maintaining the energy band structures that facilitated energy and charge transfer. The synthesized small molecule SM-4OMe and the PTB7-TH had somewhat similar chemical structureswith the same planar BDT donor units-and thus allowed sufficient mixing between them for energy transfer to take place. The power conversion efficiency of a device incorporating a ternary blend of PTB7-TH:SM-4OMe:PC71BM (0.9 :0.1 :1.5, w/w/w) as the active layer, processed with diiodooctane (2 vol%) in chlorobenzene, was 10.4%, which is higher than the value of 8% of the corresponding device incorporating PTB7-TH:PC71BM (1 :1.5, w/w)-an increase of 30%. We attribute this enhancement to the energy transfer from the high-band-gap small molecule SM-4OMe to the low-band-gap polymer PTB7-TH and to the optimal phase-separated bulk heterojunction morphology that comprises a mean PC71BM cluster size of 6 nm, which is lower than 12 nm for the PTB7-TH and PC71BM binary blends, and slightly better in-plane packing, arising from the inducements of the presence of SM-4OMe. This approach provides a facile and effective way to enhance the power conversion efficiency of single junction organic photovoltaics.Item type:Item, Engineering the Core Units of Small-Molecule Acceptors to Enhance the Performance of Organic Photovoltaics(1970-01-01) ;Wang, Hao-Cheng ;Chen, Chung-Hao ;Li, Ren-Hao ;Lin, Yu-CheTsao, Cheng-SiUnderstanding the chemical structures of next-generation small molecules is a critical step for increasing the performance of organic photovoltaics (OPVs); an OPV's small molecule determines not only the extent of light absorption but also the morphology. Herein, four small molecules featuring different cores-indaceno dithiophene, dithienoindeno indaceno dithiophene (IDTT), substituted IDTT, and dithienothiophene-pyrrolobenzothiadiazole-denoted as ID-4Cl, IT-4Cl, m-ITIC-OR-4Cl, and Y7, respectively, are selected to form active layers with poly(quinoxaline) (PTQ10) and poly(benzodithiophene-4,8-dione) (PM6). The Y7 devices exhibit the best performance in both systems, with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) reaching 14.5%; in comparison, ID-4Cl device gives a PCE of 10.0% for blending with PTQ10 and a relative efficiency enhancement of 45%. The same trend occurs for the cases of PM6 blend devices. This enhancement is attributed to i) the improved short-circuit current density that is provided by the greater degree of conjugation in S, N-heteroarenes ladder-type fused-ring cores of Y7, ii) an induced face-on Y7 orientation and smaller domain sizes that result from the sp(2)-hybridized nitrogen side chain, and iii) smaller energy loss. This study reveals the importance of the core structure on the device performance and provides guidelines for the design of new materials for OPV technologies.Item type:Item, Enhancing performance of ternary blend photovoltaics by tuning the side chains of two-dimensional conjugated polymer(2019-08-01) ;Chen, Chung-Hao ;Lu, Yi-Ju ;Su, Yu-Wei ;Lin, Yu-CheLin, Hsi-KueiWe prepared the ternary blends active layer by incorporating a new two-dimensional donor-acceptor (D/A) conjugated polymer (BDTTBO) comprising benzo-dithiophene-thiophene-thiophene-benzo oxadiazole chemical units that has three different conjugated side chains bithiophene (BT), benzothiophene (BzT) and thienothiophene (TT) BDTTBO-BT, BDTTBO-BzT and BDTTBO-TT into poly (benzodithiophene-fluorothienothiophene) (PTB7-TH) and PC71BM as for organic photovoltaics (OPVs). We expected that incorporating these BDTTBO with different side chains into the blend of PTB7-TH and PC71BM not only can broaden the absorption of solar spectrum thereby increasing short-circuit current density but also tune the packing of PTB7-TH and the dispersion of PC71BM. In particular, we found that incorporating 10% of BDTTBO-BT to form the PTB7-TH:BDTTBO-BT:PC71BM ternary blend (active layer) device could improve the power conversion efficiency to 10.4% from 9.0% for the binary blend of PTB7-TH:PC71BM device-a relative increase of 15%. We examined the packing orientations of the PBDTTBO:PTB7-TH:PC71BM ternary blend films using synchrotron two-dimensional grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, and found that the incorporation of 10% relatively higher crystallinity PBDTTBO-BT, PBDTTBO-BzT or PBDTTBO-TT not only altered the packing orientation of PTB7-TH substantially but also reduced PC71BM cluster size in the ternary blend system, as compared to that in the case of PTB7-TH with PC71BM binary blend, thereby providing more pathways for electrons and thus enhancing the carrier transport in the ternary blend, as evidenced by the carrier mobility.Item type:Item, Enhancing photovoltaic performance by tuning the domain sizes of a small-molecule acceptor by side-chain-engineered polymer donors(2019-02-21) ;Lin, Yu-Che ;Lu, Yi-Ju ;Tsao, Cheng-Si ;Saeki, AkinoriLi, Jia-XingThis paper reports two new fluorine-substituted polymer donors (BO2FC8, BO2FEH), with different side-chain architectures, and a new chlorine-substituted small-molecule acceptor (m-ITIC-OR-4Cl) that are capable of simultaneous charge and energy transfer as the binary blend active layer for organic photovoltaics. We first resolved the single-crystal structure of m-ITIC-OR-4Cl and then used simultaneous grazing-incidence wide-and small-angle X-ray scattering to decipher the multi-length-scale structures-such as the shape and size of aggregated domains and molecular orientation-of the blends of BO2FEH and BO2FC8 with m-ITIC-OR-4Cl. The linear side chains of BO2FC8 facilitated its packing and, thus, induced m-ITIC-OR-4Cl to form smaller disc-shaped aggregated domains (thickness: 2.9 nm) than its aggregate domain (thickness: 5.4 nm) in the blend of the branched BO2FEH. That is, the binary blend system of linear-side-chain BO2FC8 with m-ITIC-OR-4Cl featured larger interfacial areas and more pathways for charge transfer and transport, as evidenced by their carrier mobilities. The highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.0% was that for the BO2FC8: m-ITIC-OR-4Cl device, being consistent with the predicted PCE of 11.2% using machine learning based on random forest algorism; in comparison, the PCE of the BO2FEH:m-ITIC-OR-4Cl device was 6.4%. This study has not only provided insight into the photovoltaic performances of new polymer donor/small-molecule acceptor blends but has also, for the first time, deciphered the hierarchical morphologies-from molecule orientation to nano-domain shape and size-of such blend systems, linking the morphologies to the photovoltaic performances. The use of side-chain architectures suggests an approach for tuning the morphology of the polymer/small-molecule binary blend active layer for use in organic photovoltaics.Item type:Item, Evolving molecular architectures of donor-acceptor conjugated polymers for photovoltaic applications: from one-dimensional to branched to two-dimensional structures(2017-12-14) ;Su, Yu-Wei ;Lin, Yu-Che ;Wei, Kung-Hwa ;材料科學與工程學系Department of Materials Science and EngineeringOver the last ten years, the molecular architectures of p-type donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers designed for bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaics, when mixed with fullerenes or n-type polymers, have progressed substantially from one-dimensional (1-D) to branched to two-dimensional (2-D) D-A conjugated structures. In the 1-D structures, alternating D and A units allow internal charge transfer along the conjugated backbone and increase the effective resonance length, as a result of facilitated pi-electron delocalization. Upon progressing from 1-D structures to branched D-A conjugated polymers (comprising repeating donor units in the main chain with electron-withdrawing side chain units) to 2-D conjugated polymers (having D-A repeating units on their backbones as well as perpendicular electron-donating groups on their D units), the solubility, effective conjugation length, and photophysical and BHJ photovoltaic properties have all been altered dramatically. The ideal p-type 2-D conjugated D-A polymer for use in BHJ photovoltaic devices should possess a low band gap (to broaden the absorption range), excellent packing characteristics (particularly along the out-of-plane direction, ensuring good carrier transport), and suitable energy levels for efficient electron transfer (to fullerene moieties or n-type polymers). In this review, we discuss the effects of the structural characteristics and optical properties of these conjugated polymers as well as their packing characteristics on the device performances.Item type:Item, High-Efficiency Organic Tandem Solar Cells With Effective Transition Metal Chelates Interconnecting Layer(2017-10-01) ;Chang, Sheng-Yung ;Lin, Yu-Che ;Sun, Pengyu ;Hsieh, Yao-TsungMeng, LeiOrganic tandem solar cells have two sub-cells vertically connected via a tunnel junction (or interconnecting layer, ICL), which the ICL plays a critical role of determining the performance of the tandem cell. In this manuscript, we report a new design of the ICL consisting of zirconium (IV) acetylacetonate (Zr-Acac) as the electron transport layer. The Zr-Acac has a suitable work function to pin the Fermi-level of the ICL and hence, can effectively behave as the charge recombination function for the tandem device. Comparing to the reference device consisting of ZnO ETL layer, the Zr-Acac ICL can effectively enhance the efficiency by 20%, from 8.4 to 10.1% power conversion efficiencies. More importantly, the Zr-Acac ETL layer functions effectively without thermal annealing, which not only simplifies the tandem solar cell processing, but also widens the front sub-cell material selection.Item type:Item, Hydrogen plasma-treated MoSe2 nanosheets enhance the efficiency and stability of organic photovoltaics(2019-10-07) ;Wang, Hao-Cheng ;Lin, Yu-Che ;Chen, Chung-Hao ;Huang, Chi-HsienChang, BinIn this paper we report the effect on the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of photovoltaic devices after incorporating hydrogenated two-dimensional (2D) MoSe2 nanosheets into the active layer of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaics (OPV). The surface properties of 2D MoSe2 nanosheets largely affect their dispersion in the active layer blend and, thus, influence the carrier mobility, PCE, and stability of corresponding devices. We treated MoSe2 nanosheets with hydrogen plasma and investigated their influence on the polymer packing and fullerene domain size of the active layer. For the optimized devices incorporating 37.5 wt% of untreated MoSe2, we obtained a champion PCE of 9.82%, compared with the champion reference PCE of approximately 9%. After incorporating the hydrogen plasma-treated MoSe2 nanosheets, we achieved a champion PCE of 10.44%-a relative increase of 16% over that of the reference device prepared without MoSe2 nanosheets. This PCE is the one of the highest ever reported for OPVs incorporating 2D materials. We attribute this large enhancement to the enhanced exciton generation and dissociation at the MoSe2-fullerene interface and, consequently, the balanced charge carrier mobility. The device incorporating the MoSe2 nanosheets maintained 70% of its initial PCE after heat-treatment at 100 degrees C for 1 h; in contrast, the PCE of the reference device decreased to 60% of its initial value-a relative increase in stability of 17% after incorporating these nanosheets. We also incorporated MoSe2 nanosheets (both with and without treatment) into a polymer donor (PBDTTBO)/small molecule (IT-4F) acceptor system. The champion PCEs reached 7.85 and 8.13% for the devices incorporating the MoSe2 nanosheets with and without plasma treatment, respectively-relative increases of 8 and 12%, respectively, over that of the reference. These results should encourage a push toward the implementation of transition metal dichalcogenides to enhance the performances of BHJ OPVs.Item type:Item, Linear solubilizing side chain substituents enhance the photovoltaic properties of two-dimensional conjugated benzodithiophene-based polymers(2015-11-19) ;Jiang, Jian-Ming ;Raghunath, Putikam ;Lin, Yu-Che ;Lin, Hsi-KueiKo, Chen-LinIn this study we synthesized medium-band gap, two-dimensional (2-D) conjugated polymers comprising electron-rich benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b\'] dithiophene (BDT) units presenting conjugated thiophene (T) side chains and electron-deficient alkoxy-modified 2,1,3-benzooxadiazole (BO) moieties. We introduced various solubilizing substituents-linear alkyl, alkoxy, and alkythio units-on the thiophene side chains to obtain a series of 2-D conjugated D-pi-A polymers: PBDTT-C-BO, PBDTT-O-BO, and PBDTT-S-BO. The solubilizing substituents of the BDT units altered the solubility, conformations, and electronic properties of the synthesized conjugated polymers, allowing tuning of the photovoltaic properties when blended with fullerenes. We investigated the effects of the different linear solubilizing substituents of the BDT units on the structural, optical, and electronic properties (e.g., band gap energies) of the resulting 2-D conjugated polymers, as determined from quantum-chemical calculations, UV-Vis absorption spectra, and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. Atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images revealed the morphologies of active layers comprising these 2-D conjugated polymers and the fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM). Through rational structural modifications of the solubilizing substituents in the 2-D conjugated polymers with alkoxy, alkythio or alkyl units, the resulting PCEs varied from 5.4 to 7.5%. A polymer solar cell based on a blend of PBDTT-C-BO and PC71BM exhibited the best photovoltaic performance among our three studied systems, with a high short-circuit current density (J(sc)) of 15.7 mA cm(-2) and a power conversion efficiency of 7.5%, without the need for any processing additives or post-treatment processes, highlighting the importance of careful selection of appropriate solubilizing substituent that attached to the donor segments when designing efficient D-pi-A polymers for use in solar cells. C.We synthesized and characterized a series of novel two-dimensional Se-atom-substituted donor (D)-p-acceptor (A) conjugated polymersPBDTTTBO, PBDTTTBS, PBDTTSBO, PBDTSTBO, PBDTTSBS, PBDTSTBS, PBDTSSBO, and PBDTSSBSfeaturing benzodithiophene (BDT) as the donor, thiophene (T) as the p-bridge, and 2,1,3-benzooxadiazole (BO) as the acceptor with different number of Se atoms at different p-conjugated locations, including the pi-bridge, side chain, and electron-withdrawing units. We then systematically investigated the effect of different locations and the number of Se atoms in these two-dimensional conjugated polymers on the structural, optical, and electronics such as band-gap energies of the resulting polymers, as determined through quantum-chemical calculations, UVvis absorption spectra, and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. We found that through the rational structural modification of the 2-D conjugated Se-substituted polymers the resulting PCEs could vary over 3-fold (from 2.4 to 7.6%), highlighting the importance of careful selection of appropriate chemical structures such as the location of Se atoms when designing efficient D-p-A polymers for use in solar cells. Among these tested BO-containing polymers, PBDTSTBO that has moderate band gaps and good open-circuit voltages (up to 0.86 V) when mixed with PC71BM (1:2, w/w) provided the highest power conversion efficiency (7.6%) in a single-junction polymer solar cell, suggesting that these polymers have potential applicability as donor materials in the bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells.Item type:Item, Molecular engineering of side chain architecture of conjugated polymers enhances performance of photovoltaics by tuning ternary blend structures(2018-01-01) ;Lin, Yu-Che ;Cheng, Hao-Wen ;Su, Yu-Wei ;Lin, Bo-HsienLu, Yi-JuSeveral approaches, including the use of small molecule acceptors, novel polymer structures, and tandem cell structures, have been adopted to prepare polymer solar cells displaying high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). The application of ternary blends as the active layer for polymer solar cells-for which the absorption spectra can be tuned by varying the composition ratios of components-is another facile approach toward optimizing the PCEs of devices. The selection of suitable ternary blends active layer often relies on intuition and remains a formidable challenge. Here, we adopted a systemic approach of not only using the same donor chemical units in the two donor-acceptor (D/A) conjugated polymers with complementary light absorption (energy band gaps) but also varying the side chains architectures as a means of tuning the packing of these semi-planar conjugated polymers, thereby influencing the carrier transport and optimizing the PCE. We employed linear, branch and mixed linear-and-branch side-chain attached benzooxadiazole (BO) as the acceptor (A) units in poly [benzodithiophene-thiophene-benzooxadiazole] (PBDTTBO) conjugated polymers and monitored their interactions with poly[benzodithiophene-fluorothienothiophene] (PTB7-TH), both of which featured the same benzodithiophene (BDTT) donor (D) units. We found that incorporating a minor amount (10%) of D/A conjugated PBDTTBO with such side chains into the PTB7-TH with a fullerene allowed us to tune the packing of the two polymers and, thereby, enhance the PCEs of corresponding ternary blend devices; the PCE of the ternary blend device incorporating PBDTTBO with two branched-side chains, PTB7-TH, and PC71BM increased to 11.4% from 9.0% for the device incorporating only the binary blend of PTB7-TH and PC71BM-a relative increase of more than 25%. This approach of using side chain engineering to tune the structure of a minor conjugated polymer and, thus, influence the packing of another major conjugated polymer that features the same donor chemical units appears to be an effective means of preparing highly efficient polymer cells.Item type:Item, Potassium-Presenting Zinc Oxide Surfaces Induce Vertical Phase Separation in Fullerene-Free Organic Photovoltaics(2020-01-01) ;Cheng, Hao-Wen ;Raghunath, Putikam ;Wang, Kai-li ;Cheng, PeiHaung, TianyiBulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure based organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have recently showed great potential for achieving high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). An ideal BHJ structure would feature large donor/acceptor interfacial areas for efficient exciton dissociation and gradient distributions with high donor and acceptor concentrations near the anode and cathode, respectively, for efficient charge extraction. However, the random mixing of donors and acceptors in the BHJ often suffers the severe charge recombination in the interface, resulting in poor charge extraction. Herein, we propose a new approach-treating the surface of the zinc oxide (ZnO) as an electron transport layer with potassium hydroxide-to induce vertical phase separation of an active layer incorporating the nonfullerene acceptor IT-4F. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the binding energy difference between IT-4F and the PBDB-T-2Cl, to the potassium (K)-presenting ZnO interface, is twice as strong as that for IT-4F and PBDB-T-2Cl to the untreated ZnO surface, such that it would induce more IT-4F moving toward the K-presenting ZnO interface than the untreated ZnO interface thermodynamically. Benefiting from efficient charge extraction, the best PCEs increased to 12.8% from 11.8% for PBDB-T-2Cl:IT-4F-based devices, to 12.6% from 11.6% for PBDB-T-2Cl:Y1-4F-based devices, to 13.5% from 12.2% for PBDB-T-2Cl:Y6-based devices, and to 15.7% from 15.1% for PM6:Y6-based devices.Item type:Item, Realizing Efficient Charge/Energy Transfer and Charge Extraction in Fullerene-Free Organic Photovoltaics via a Versatile Third Component(2019-08-01) ;Cheng, Hao-Wen ;Zhang, Huotian ;Lin, Yu-Che ;She, Nian-ZuWang, RuiSolution-processed organic photovoltaics (OPVs) based on bulk-heterojunctions have gained significant attention to alleviate the increasing demend of fossil fuel in the past two decades. OPVs combined of a wide bandgap polymer donor and a narrow bandgap nonfullerene acceptor show potential to achieve high performance. However, there are still two reasons to limit the OPVs performance. One, although this combination can expand from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared region, the overall external quantum efficiency of the device suffers low values. The other one is the low open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of devices resulting from the relatively downshifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the narrow bandgap. Herein, the approach to select and incorporate a versatile third component into the active layer is reported. A third component with a bandgap larger than that of the acceptor, and absorption spectra and LUMO levels lying within that of the donor and acceptor, is demonstrated to be effective to conquer these issues. As a result, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) are enhanced by the elevated short-circuit current and V-OC; the champion PCEs are 11.1% and 13.1% for PTB7-Th:IEICO-4F based and PBDB-T:Y1 based solar cells, respectively.Item type:Item, Side Chain Structure Affects the Photovoltaic Performance of Two-Dimensional Conjugated Polymers(2014-01-14) ;Jiang, Jian-Ming ;Lin, His-Kuei ;Lin, Yu-Che ;Chen, Hsiu-ChengLan, Shang-CheWe used Stille coupling of electron-rich benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) presenting conjugated alkylthiophene (T), alkylphenyl (P), or alkylfuran (F) side chains with electron-deficient alkoxy-modified 2,1,3-benzooxadiazole (BO) moieties to obtain a series of two-dimensional, conjugated, D-pi-A polymers (PBDTTBO, PBDTPBO, and PBDTFBO). The side chains of the BDT units altered the solubility, conformations, and electronic properties of the synthesized conjugated, polymers, allowing tuning of their photovoltaic properties when blended with fullerenes. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the presence of these side chain groups on the BDT donor units affected the torsion angles between the side chain groups and the conjugated main chains but resulted in only slightly different energy levels for the highest occupied molecular orbitals for these polymers, consistent with results obtained experimentally using cyclic voltammetry. These polymers displayed excellent thermal stabilities (5 wt % degradation temperatures: >330 degrees C) and broad spectral absorptions (from 450 to 700 nm). Transmission electron microscopy images revealed that the morphologies of active layers comprising these two-dimensional conjugated polymers and the fullerene derivative PC71BM did, however, vary substantially depending on the structure of the side chains that affects the solubility of the polymers. As a result, the efficiencies of photovoltaic devices incorporating PBDTFBO, PBDTPBO, or PBDTTBO polymers and PC71BM varied greatly, from 3.6 to 5.9%. When using 1-chloronaphthalene (1 vol %) or 1,8-diiodooctane (1 vol %) as an additive for processing the active layer, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of photovoltaic devices incorporating blends of PBDTFBO, PBDTPBO, or PBDTTBO and PC71BM (1:2) improved to 5.4, 6.4, and 7.4%, respectively, due to their optimized morphologies, with the PCE of 7.4% being among the highest values reported for conjugated polymers involving BO moieties. Thus, the photovoltaic properties of these conjugated polymers were highly tunable through slight modifications of their side chain structures.Item type:Item, Synthesis of IrO(2)decorated core-shell PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres for bio-interface application(2020-09-11) ;Hsieh, Tsung-Lin ;Hung, Pei-Sung ;Wang, Chuan-Jyun ;Tso, Kuang-ChihWang, Han-YiIn this paper, an effective approach is demonstrated for the fabrication of IrO2-decorated polystyrene@functionalized polypyrrole (core@shell; PS@PPyNH2) microspheres. The synthesis begins with the preparation of monodispersive PS microspheres with a diameter of 490 nm, by a process of emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization, followed by a copolymerization process involving pyrrole and PyNH(2)monomers in a PS microsphere aqueous suspension, to produce uniform PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres with a diameter of 536 nm. The loading of 2 nm IrO(2)nanoparticles onto the PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres can be easily adjusted by tuning the pH value of the IrO(2)colloidal solution and the PS@PPyNH(2)suspension. At pH 4, we successfully obtain IrO2-decorated PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres via electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding simultaneously between the negatively-charged IrO(2)nanoparticles and the positively-charged PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres. These IrO2-decorated PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres exhibit a characteristic cyclic voltammetric profile, similar to that of an IrO(2)thin film. The charge storage capacity is 5.19 mA cm(-2), a value almost five times greater than that of PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres. In addition, these IrO2-decorated PS@PPyNH(2)microspheres exhibit excellent cell viability and biocompatibility.
