Item type:Item, AlGaInP light-emitting diodes with stripe patterned omni-directional reflector(2006-02-01) ;Lee, YJ ;Lu, TC ;Kuo, HC ;Wang, SCLiou, MJAn n-side-up AlGaInP-based light-emitting diode (LED) with a stripe-patterned omni-directional reflector (ODR) was fabricated by adopting the adhesive-layer bonding scheme. Comparing to the conventional ODR LED, the stripe-patterned ODR LED significantly enhanced the output power with an only slight higher forward voltage. This improvement was analyzed by the scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) and could be attributable to the geometrical shape of stripe patterns that redirects the guided light towards to the escaping cone of the LED surface. The optimized dimension of stripe patterns was also calculated by simply modeling a LED dice with a stripe-patterned ODR structure, according to optical ray-tracing method.Item type:Item, An aberrant autocrine activation of the platelet-derived growth factor alpha-receptor in follicular and papillary thyroid carcinoma cell lines(2006-01-18) ;Chen, KT ;Lin, JD ;Liou, MJ ;Weng, HFChang, CAPlatelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) can bind to its ligand and consequently possess a kinase activity, and which is associated with the carcinogenesis of different cell types, including astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas. and glioblastoma. In a cDNA microarray analysis, we observe the over-expressed mRNA of both PDGF-A and PDGF-alpha receptor in thyroid carcinoma cells. And the elevated protein expressions of PDGF-A and PDGF-alpha receptor in thyroid carcinoma cells were also confirmed by a Western blot analysis. The phosphorylation of PDGF-alpha receptor evaluated by an antibody against Tyr 720-phosphate was found in thyroid carcinoma cells. The tyrosine kinase activity of PDGF-alpha receptor was inhibited by tyrphostin AG1295 and showed a dose-dependent inhibition for the proliferation of thyroid carcinoma cells. These findings imply that autocrine activation of PDGF-alpha receptor plays a crucial role in the carcinogenesis of thyroid cells. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. It is demonstrated that the periodic and geometrical shape of the stripe-patterned array improves the light extraction efficiency by increasing the extraction of guided light. Compared to the conventional ODR LED, the stripe-patterned ODR LED significantly enhanced the output power and with only a slightly higher forward voltage. This improvement was analysed by the scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) and the optimized dimension of stripe patterns was also calculated on the basis of a Monte Carlo ray tracing simulation. According to the above analysis, the increase of light extraction could not only be attributed to the geometrical shape of the stripe patterns that redirect the trapped light towards the top-escaping cone of the LED surface but also to the repetitive stripe-patterned array of diffracting elements that effectively diffract the guided light outside the LED surface. Moreover, the optimized dimension of the stripe pattern is 3 mu m wide, 2 mu m deep and spaced 3 mu m apart, which coincides with experimental results.Item type:Item, Oxidation of TNT by photo-Fenton process(2004-12-01) ;Liou, MJ ;Lu, MC ;Chen, JN ;環境工程研究所Institute of Environmental EngineeringA series of photo-Fenton reactions have been performed for the degradation of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in a 4.2-1 reactor. The degradation reaction rate of TNT followed a pseudo-first-order behavior; and the rate constants for 2.4 mW cm(-2) UV only, 2.4 mWcm(-2)UV/H2O2, Fenton, photo-Fenton (2.4 mW cm(-2)) and photo-Fenton (4.7 mW cm(-2)) were 0.002 min(-1), 0.007 min(-1), 0.014 min(-1), 0.025 min(-1) and 0.037 min(-1), respectively. Increasing the intensity of UV light, and the concentrations of ferrous ions and hydrogen peroxide promoted the oxidation rate under the experimental conditions in this study. The weighting factor (f), the Fe(II)-promoted efficiency (r) and the promoted-UV light efficiency (p) were calculated to clarify their effects on the TNT oxidation. Moreover, the inhibition effect of hydroxyl radical was also observed in both Fenton and photo-Fenton oxidation when the concentration of Fe(II) were higher than 2.88 mM. Solid phase micro-extraction was first applied to the separation of the organic byproducts from TNT oxidation. GC/MS was employed to identify the byproducts during the Fenton and photo-Fenton oxidation of TNT. These compounds were clarified as 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, 1-methyl-2,4-dinitrobenzene 2,5-dinitrobenzoic acid and 1,3-dinitrobenzene. By these byproducts, the mechanisms of the methyl group oxidation, decarboxylation, aromatic ring breakage, and hydrolysis can be recognized and demonstrated. The pathway of TNT oxidation by photo-Fenton process was also proposed in this study. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
