Item type:Item, Disrupted long-range spin-spiral ordering and electric polarization in the Zn-substituted quantum helimagnet LiCu(2-x)Zn(x)O(2)(2010-06-18) ;Hsu, H. C. ;Lee, W. L. ;Lin, J. -Y. ;Liu, H. L.Chou, F. C.Long-range spin-spiral ordering in quantum quasi-two-dimensional helimagnet LiCu(2)O(2) is destroyed by similar to 8% Zn(2+) substitution and a magnetic anomaly near similar to 14 K of different character emerges. Zn substitution may have introduced either a magnetic ground state of spin glass in nature, antiferromagnetic ordering with complex easy-plane anisotropy, or a gapped phase which is phase separated and proportional to the Zn substitution level on a short-range ordered background. The magnetic ground state is modified at the same time that the electric polarization disappears.Item type:Item, Disrupted long-range spin-spiral ordering and electric polarization in the Zn-substituted quantum helimagnet LiCu2-xZnxO2(2010-06-18) ;Hsu, H. J. ;Hsieh, C. C. ;Chung, T. Y. ;Hsu, S. Y.Wu, K. H.The authors have fabricated NaxCoO2 thin films via lateral diffusion of sodium into Co3O4 (111) epitaxial films (reactive solid-phase epitaxy [Ohta , Cryst. Growth Des. 5, 25 (2005)]). The environment of thermal diffusion is key to the control of the sodium content in thin films. From the results of x-ray diffraction and in-plane rho(ab), the epitaxial growth and the sodium contents of these films were identified. The thermoelectric measurements show a large thermoelectric power similar to that observed in single crystals. The quasiparticle scattering rate is found to approach zero at low temperatures, consistent with the small residual resistivity, indicating high quality of the NaxCoO2 thin films. C.Lin, J. -Y.The vibrational and magnetic Raman excitation spectra were examined in overdoped Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films. Below T-c, certain phonons in undoped YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) show strong self-energy effects, which gradually vanish with increasing Ca concentration into the overdoped regime. The observed B-1g symmetry two-magnon excitation peak near 2900 cm(-1) in YBCO is significantly broadened, weakened, and shifts to the lower frequency with increasing Ca content, indicating the effective value of magnetic superexchange energy decreases and that the life time of the magrions becomes shorter with increasing hole concentrations. C. ;Lin, J. -Y. ;Lee, W. L. ;Chu, M. -W.Imai, T.A complete phase diagram of Zn-substituted quantum quasi-two-dimensional helimagnet LiCu(2)O(2) has been presented. Helical ordering transition temperature (T(h)) of the original LiCu(2)O(2) follows finite size scaling for less than similar to 5.5% Zn substitution, which implies the existence of finite helimagnetic domains with domain boundaries formed with nearly isolated spins. Higher Zn substitution >= 5.5% quenches the long-range helical ordering and introduces an intriguing Zn-level-dependent magnetic phase transition with slight thermal hysteresis and a universal quadratic field dependence for T(c)(Zn > 0.055, H). The magnetic coupling constants of nearest-neighbor J(1) and next-nearest-neighbor J(2) (alpha = J(2)/J(1)) are extracted from high temperature series expansion fitting and N = 16 finite chain exact diagonalization simulation. We have also provided evidence of direct correlation between long-range helical spin ordering and the magnitude of electric polarization in this spin-driven multiferroic material.Item type:Item, Nonmagnetic impurity perturbation to the quasi-two-dimensional quantum helimagnet LiCu2O2(2010-09-29) ;Hsu, H. L. ;Zhang, Kenneth Y. -J. ;Wu, L. C. ;Uba, L.Uba, S.The optical and magneto-optical (MO) properties of (La(0.7)A(0.3))MnO(3) (A = Sr, Ca, and Ce) thin films have been investigated. It is found that the value shape of spectra is strongly dependent on different cation dopings. The Sr-doped thin film exhibits a strong Drude response and maximum Kerr rotation angle of 0.32 degrees at similar to 3.4 eV. Interestingly, the replacement of Sr ions with the smaller Ca ions and the tetravalent Ce ions all lead to a remarkable suppression of the carrier density and the MO response. Such differences are interpreted as due to their different electronic band structures. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Y.電子物理學系The optical reflectance of single-crystalline Na0.68CoO2 (thickness around 3000 angstrom) thin film has been measured over a wide frequency (40-55000 cm(-1)) and at temperatures between 20 and 300 K. The room-temperature optical conductivity spectrum displays a metallic character. In addition, one E-1u phonon mode at about 518 cm(-1) is identified, while the other four phonon peaks are due to the sapphire substrate. As the temperature is lowered, the Drude plasma frequency exhibits little temperature dependence, whereas the scattering rate monotonically decreases with decreasing temperature. Notably, the Drude scattering rate at 20 K is found to approach zero, consistent with the small residual resistivity, indicating high quality of Na0.68CoO2 thin film. H.Spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to investigate the strain-dependent optical properties of BiFeO3 thin films. At room temperature, the compressively strained BiFeO3/LaAlO3 thin films show the largest band gap of about 3.12 eV. It redshifts to 2.75 eV for the tensile strained BiFeO3/NdScO3 thin films. With increasing temperature, observable anomalies in the band gap for all strained thin films near 640K indicate that antiferromagnetic transition temperature is independent of strain and close to its bulk value, which are in good agreement with the first-principles calculations. These results further suggest a complex nature of charge-spin coupling in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films. C.Dong, C. L.Rubidium tungsten bronzes (RbxWO3) have recently attracted much attention due to their intriguing phenomena, such as complex structural phase transitions, strong electron-phonon coupling, and superconducting properties. This study investigates the local atomic and electronic structures of RbxWO3 (0.17 <= x <= 0.33). X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed a hexagonal tungsten bronze (HTB) phase. X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) at the W L-3-edge and Rb K-edge of RbxWO3 were carried out. The XAS analysis indicated a local distorted WO6 octahedron which leads to a splitting of e(g) and t(2g) energy states in the tungsten 5d orbital and this splitting of energy levels exhibited an asymmetrical behavior at x = 0.23 and 0.27. Overall analysis revealed a distortion of local atomic structure of the WO6 octahedra by rubidium doping, leading to the modification of the electronic structures of e(g) and t(2g) states in the tungsten 5d orbital, thereby accounting for the property changes in CDW formation and superconducting transition temperature of these materials.
