Item type:Item, Emillective display with integration of reflective liquid crystal display and organic light emitting diode(2007-01-01) ;Yang, Bo-Ru ;Liu, Kang-Hung ;Shieh, Han-Ping D. ;光電工程學系顯示科技研究所A novel emi-flective display which integrates a reflective liquid crystal display (R-LCD) and an organic light emitting diode (OLED) was demonstrated, whose OLED achieved a gain factor of 8 in contrast ratio (CR) compared with the conventional OLED. Under the high light ambience, the R-LCD is sustained with the CR of 10:1 at the viewing angle between +/- 55 degrees; while in the dim ambience, the OLED is operated with the CR of 5000 : 1 at +/- 50 degrees. By replacing the backlight system with OLED, emi-flective display has the benefits of lighter weight (< 90%), thinner form factor (< 40%), and lower power consumption (< 2%, under sunlight) compared with the conventional LCD; therefore, to be very applicable for mobile products.Item type:Item, Innovative plasma alignment method in flexible liquid crystal display films(2007) ;Liu, Kang-Hung ;Lee, Chin-Yang ;Ho, Cheng-Ta ;Cheng, Horng-LongLin, Shih-TingLiquid crystals (LCs) in flexible cell were aligned on polyimide (PI) surface treated by a paperlike plasma beam. The beam had energy of 450 eV and incident angle of 70 with respect to normal flexible indium-zinc oxide-coated substrate. The pretilt angle and anchoring energy of LCs on plasma-aligned PI surface were almost identical to the angle and energy of the rubbing PI. However, optical performance of the plasma-aligned cell was superior to the rubbing cell under various bending conditions. Furthermore, such noncontact alignment technology is suitable for large area and roll-to-roll fabrication of flexible LC films. These novel flexible LCDs comprise microcell replication, alignment treatments, and cell assembly. The cell gap of such flexible LCDs was maintained well by cross-type spacers formed by photolithography, despite bending: moreover, the deviation in cell gap under various bending states was less than 0.1 mu m. The structure, fabrication technique, and basic display characteristics of the flexible LCD are also described. Finally, this device shows high mechanical stability against external bending, a high contrast ratio of 500 : 1, and an acceptable response time. Compared with photopolymerisation-induced phase separation, the micro-cell LCD has a higher contrast ratio, a more reliable fabrication process, and a strong potential as a high-performance flexible LCD.Item type:Item, Ultrathin Reflective Flexible Liquid Crystal Display Film(2012-04-01) ;Liu, Kang-Hung ;Shieh, Han-Ping D. ;光電工程學系 ;顯示科技研究所Department of PhotonicsIn this investigation, we present a thin reflective liquid crystal film with a mixed-mode twisted nematic mode. A low-temperature alignment process is used to obtain good orientation of the liquid crystal molecules. A microcell process is utilized to maintain a uniform cell gap of the flexible display under various bending conditions. To simplify the structure of a flexible mixed-mode twisted nematic liquid crystal display film, a layer of Zeonor optical plastic material is used in place of conventional plastic substrates; this material exhibits quarter wave retardation. The ultrathin device exhibits good cell gap uniformity, a high reflectivity of 35%, and a short response time of 6.67 ms. Under high light ambience (reflected luminance of 250 nits), a LCD incorporated with a volumetric scattering layer (VSL) showed a contrast ratio of 10 : 1 at the viewing cone of 60 degrees in the reflection mode. By adding the VSL to the LCD, the haze component was increased by a factor of 3.3. With the advantages of small form factor, flexibility, power-saving, and legibility in bright ambience, the FTF-LCD is very applicable to mobile products.
