Item type:Item, Fuzzy logic control of a stiffness-adaptable seismic isolation system(2015-01-01) ;Lin, Tzu-Kang ;Lu, Lyan-Ywan ;Chang, Hsun ;土木工程學系Department of Civil EngineeringTraditional passive isolation systems have been shown to provide satisfactory seismic mitigation performance under typical far-field earthquake conditions. However, because of the untunable designated isolation period, the performance of these systems is still strongly affected by the low-frequency resonance phenomenon observed during near-fault earthquakes, which are usually dominated by a long-duration impulse. The use of semi-active isolation systems with variable stiffness, which are usually equipped with a customized control algorithm to determine the isolation stiffness or period in real time, could be a promising solution to overcome this problem. To realize this technology, this study develops a smart isolation system that combines the leverage-type stiffness-controllable isolation system (LSCIS) with a simple fuzzy logic control (FLC). Because the proposed FLC merely requires feedback from the velocity and displacement responses of the isolation base, it is quite easily implemented. Theoretical analysis shows that the extreme displacement of the isolation level caused by near-fault seismic waves can be mitigated by the proposed system with tolerable acceleration response variations compared with that of the traditional passive isolation system. The movement of the pivot point of the LSCIS can also be adjusted to address the inherent hardware constraint that limits its practical application. Experimental verification conducted on a shake table further demonstrates the feasibility of integrating the LSCIS system with FLC after proper consideration of the friction effect generated by the leverage mechanism and the inevitable time delay effect. The main concept behind this type of system is to adjust the stiffness in the isolator to match the fundamental period of the isolated system by using a simple leverage mechanism. Although this system achieves high performance under far-field earthquakes, it is unsuitable for near-fault strong ground motion. To overcome this problem, this study considers the potential energy effect in the control law of the semi-active isolation system. The minimal energy weighting (MEW) between the potential energy and kinetic energy was first optimized through a series of numerical simulations. Two MEW algorithms, namely generic and near-fault MEW control, were then developed to efficiently reduce the structural displacement responses. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed method, a two-degree-of-freedom structure was employed as a benchmark. Numerical results indicate that the dynamic response of the structure can be effectively dampened by the proposed MEW control under both far-field and near-fault earthquakes, whereas the structural responses resulting from conventional control methods may be greater than those for the purely passive control method. Moreover, according to experimental verifications, both the generic and near-fault MEW control modes yielded promising results under impulse-like earthquakes. The practicability of the proposed control algorithm was verified.Item type:Item, Theoretical and experimental investigation of position-controlled semi-active friction damper for seismic structures(2018-01-06) ;Lu, Lyan-Ywan ;Lin, Tzu-Kang ;Jheng, Rong-Jie ;Wu, Hsin-Hsien土木工程學系A semi-active friction damper (SAFD) can be employed for the seismic protection of structural systems. The effectiveness of an SAFD in absorbing seismic energy is usually superior to that of its passive counterpart, since its slip force can be altered in real time according to structural response and excitation. Most existing SAFDs are controlled by adjusting the clamping force applied on the friction interface. Thus, the implementation of SAFDs in practice requires precision control of the clamping force, which is usually substantially larger than the slip force. This may increase the implementation complexity and cost of SAFDs. To avoid this problem, this study proposes a novel position-controlled SAFD, named the leverage-type controllable friction damper (LCFD). The LCFD system combines a traditional passive friction damper and a leverage mechanism with a movable central pivot. By simply controlling the pivot position, the damping force generated by the LCFD system can be adjusted in real time. In order to verify the feasibility of the proposed SAFD, a prototype LCFD was tested by using a shaking table. The test results demonstrate that the equivalent friction force and hysteresis loop of the LCFD can be regulated by controlling the pivot position. By considering 16 ground motions with two different intensities, the adaptive feature of the LCFD for seismic structural control is further demonstrated numerically. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
