Item type:Item, A macro analysis of Taiwan's international tourist hotel industry by using the sliding window method(2006-09-01) ;Yang, Chyan ;Lu, Wen-Min ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementThis paper proposes an alternative data envelopment analysis for assessing the operational performance of 46 international tourist hotels (ITHs) in Taiwan over the period 1997-2002. This study is the first research that combines the discriminant power of a slack-based measure and the dynamic view of window analysis in applying DEA. It is shown that the trend of mean managerial efficiency is increasing, whereas the variation converges. Most ITHs operate at decreasing returns to scale, indicating that ITHs are facing a highly competitive environment. Taiwan's 921 earthquake in 1999, the 911 incident in 2001, and the compulsory government subsidies all play key roles which affect the ITHs' managerial performance for different operating characteristics in the short term. Results also indicate that differences in management style do have a very significant influence upon ITHs' performance over time (1997-2002). Finally, the efficiency/profitability matrix of ITHs is further examined.Item type:Item, Performance benchmarking for Taiwan's international tourist hotels(2006-08-01) ;Yang, Chyan ;Lu, Wen-Min ;經營管理研究所Institute of Business and ManagementThis study proposes an alternative data envelopment analysis (DEA) method to explore the managerial performance, the input congestion, and the benchmarks of international tourist hotels (ITHs) for a small open economy, Taiwan. Several empirical results are shown: (1) most ITHs operate at decreasing returns to scale, indicating that ITHs are facing a highly competitive environment; (2) the international chain ITHs are generally more efficient than independent-owned ones; (3) ITHs located in resort areas operate slightly better on average than ones located in metropolitan areas; (4) ITHs that are close to CKS international airport operate slightly worse on average than ones far from CKS international airport; (5) congestion analysis reveals that inefficient ITHs lack the ability to integrate their resources, especially in the total area of the catering division and the number of guest rooms; and finally, (6) the reference-share measure shows that efficient international chain ITHs are able to more easily become benchmarks. The findings show that efficient international chain ITHs are more competitive and they should provide examples of operating practice.Item type:Item, Performance measurement in military provisions: The case of retail stores of Taiwan's General Welfare Service Ministry(2007-06-01) ;Yang, Chyan ;Wang, Tsung-Cheng ;Lu, Wen-Min ;管理科學系經營管理研究所This paper aims to explore the operating efficiency and the benchmark-learning roadmap of the military retail stores for Taiwan's General Welfare Service Ministry (GWSM). This study also presents an extension to the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method, by incorporating the traditional DEA, stratification DEA, attractiveness measure, and progress measure for assessing the performance of 31 retail stores of GWSM. The assessment can assist the Ministry of National Defense to improve the operational management of GWSM and to help the military retail stores on better delivering and efficient service to soldiers, veterans, and their dependents. The potential applications and strengths of DEA in assessing the military retail stores are highlighted.
