Item type:Item, Coda Stop and Taiwan Min Checked Tone Sound Changes(2016-01-01) ;Pan, Ho-hsien ;Huang, Hsiao-tung ;Lyu, Shao-ren ;外國語文學系Department of Foreign Languages and LiteraturesThis acoustical and Electroglottography (EGG) study investigates the effect of coda deletion and co-articulatory phasing on vowels and final coda stops, [p t k ?], in Taiwan Min checked tones 3 and 5 syllables. Vowel duration, f0, spectral tilt (H1*-A3*), cepstral peak prominence (CPP) and glottal contact quotient (CQH) were analyzed. Compensatory lengthening, f0 lowering and increasing periodic phonation during the production of vowels after coda deletion were observed. During gradual phasing when codas were produced as energy damping, the vowels were found to be shorter in duration and less periodic in voicing than vowels abruptly phased with coda that were produced as full stop closure. However, spectral tilt H1*-A3* was not affected by either coda deletion or co-articulatory phasing. Therefore, these findings suggest that H1*-A3* may play a salient role in checked tone identification, and, as a result, is unaffected by sound change.Item type:Item, Reexamine the Sandhi Rules and the Merging Tones in Hakka Language(2013-01-01) ;Lyu, Shao-ren ;Pan, Ho-hsien ;外國文學與語言學碩士班Graduate Institute of Foreign Literatures and LinguisticsThis paper tried to probe the merging tones and the application of sandhi rule for unchecked tones (/24/[33] and /33/[33]) in Hailu variety of Hakka language. Generally speaking, the sandhi rule was applied in both the younger (under 30) and the older (above 50) groups. Tone merging phenomenon (/24/[24] merging toward /33/[33]) was not found in the older group. Yet, the merging phenomenon was found in the younger group. The sandhi rule for /24/ and /33/ was not observed in most of the young speakers. It is proposed that the /24/ and /33/ tones were undergoing sound change by the younger generation.Item type:Item, The Effects of Lexical Tones and Nasal Coda /-n/ to Sadness in Taiwan Hakka(2012) ;Lyu, Shao-ren ;外國文學與語言學碩士班Graduate Institute of Foreign Literatures and LinguisticsThis paper concerns the relation between the emotion of sadness & lexical tone types, and the relation between the emotion of sadness & nasal coda /-n/ for non-Hakka speakers with Hakim stimuli. We try to probe what factors cause non-Hakka speakers to receive the expression of sadness in Hakka language successfully. The results showed that in both level tones and checked tone, the average ID values is crucial to the perception of sadness; falling tone is predominant in the perception of sadness than rising tones. The contribution of nasal coda /-n/ to the sadness is also significant.
