With its diamond like qualities and an extremely competitive price it has more than made a name for itself in the diamond simulants market. However now its about to take on a full fledged center stage role in an all but entirely different industry, the Flat Panel Displays Industry. CZ's optical properties and physical properties makes it the most ideal material for the backbone of a radially new flat panel display technology herein termed The Digital Micro Hinge [DMH] display technology. Using well established concepts from thin film optics we hereby present a forward looking new design for a high performance display system with CZ at the core of its architecture. The system design is centered around the selective reflections and transmissions of well defined and constructed thin films on specific substrates. By computing the relevant parameters for specific thin films that can reflect and transmit only Red, Green and Blue light and marrying the result to an RGB LED backlight system a rather unique display system emerges. This display system does away with almost all the other familiar components in Flat Panel Displays as we know them today This is due to the fact that the resulting systems uses no Color Filters, no Polarizers, no Color Wheel, no Phosphors and last but not least no Liquid Crystal Material either The impact of by passing these display staples is a drastically increased Optical Efficiency and Color Saturation orders of magnitude higher.Item type:Item, Digital Micro Hinge [DMH] Display System(2009) ;Mphepoe, Wallen ;Huang, Yi-Pai ;Shieh, Han-Ping D. ;Rudquist, Per光電工程學系Using well established concepts from thin film optics we hereby present a forward looking new design for a high performance display system. The method entails modifying and enhancing the protrusion structure of conventional Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment (MVA) pixel arrays plus the Storage Capacitors (Cst) of the pixel circuitry which increase effective pixel transmission area by a factor of 1.07. Hiding the modified storage capacitor under the parallax barrier strip increases the barrier gap or slit size by a factor of 1.52. The result is a structure that enhances mobile displays' optical efficiency by a compounded factor slightly over 60% without compromising power consumption.Item type:Item, High transmittance LC pixel design for multi-view 3D mobile display(2008) ;Mphepoe, Wallen ;Wu, Chi-Lin ;Huang, Yi-Pai ;Chuang, Shang-ChihChen, Cheng-HuanUsing a 6-view 3D mobile display, a modified LC pixel mode that increases transmittance and brightness uniformity for each viewing zone plus pixel electrode physical re-configuration capable of increasing Aperture Ratio were investigated The pixel mode utilized was the single-domain VA. In the modified case of the single domain VA mode with the reconfiguration, it was observed that by optimizing each pixel, the transmittance of the single-domain VA could be improved by more than 24% at relatively wide, mobile display, viewing angles from similar to 9 degrees to similar to 30 degrees compared with conventional multi-domain VA.Item type:Item, Liquid crystal panel for high efficiency autostereoscopic 3D displays(2008-01-01) ;Chuang, Shang-Chih ;Chen, Cheng-Huan ;Mphepoe, Wallen ;Wu, Chi-LinHuang, Yi-PaiThis paper proposes a configuration of liquid crystal panel for 3D application with the viewing angle property of each pixel varied and optimized for the direction to the corresponding perspective view, and the light blocking area of each pixel is located in accommodation to the lenticular and barrier design. The simulation result shows better performance on efficiency and cross talk comparing to the similar 3D display using traditional liquid crystal panel with the same pixel count and pixel Size.Item type:Item, Liquid crystal panel for high efficiency barrier type autostereoscopic three-dimensional displays(2009-06-20) ;Chen, Cheng-Huan ;Huang, Yi-Pai ;Chuang, Shang-Chih ;Wu, Chi-LinShieh, Han-Ping D.An autostereoscopic display with parallax barrier attached onto a liquid crystal panel suffers from the trade-off between brightness and crosstalk. One approach for making improvement by modifying the layout of light blocking components, such as thin film transistor, storage capacitor, and protrusion, in the liquid crystal pixel has been proposed. Ray tracing simulation shows that the aperture of the slanted barrier can be significantly increased, hence increasing efficiency, while keeping the same crosstalk level if those light blocking components can be shifted to the corner of the pixel. A six-view 2.83 in. (7.19 cm) prototype has shown improvement on both brightness and crosstalk compared to its counterpart using a traditional liquid crystal panel, which demonstrates an effective approach for a high-efficiency barrier-type autostereoscopic 3D display with a liquid crystal panel. The proposed design's goals were specifically aimed at tackling the, until now, mutually exclusive properties of most parallax based autostereoscopic 3D Displays i.e. staggeringly high Display Optical Efficiency and drastically low levels of image Crosstalk. By uniquely patterning a film stack onto a projection screen so that the projected left and right images are reflected to their respective viewers locations without the need for barrier or lenticular lens, we were able to achieve a 0% Image Crosstalk at similar to 90% Optical Efficiency in a 4 concurrent autostereosocopic 3D viewers Home Theater Display System.
