Item type:Item, 10 Gb/s optical carrier distributed network with W-band (0.1 THz) short-reach wireless communication system(2012-10-01) ;Chow, C. W. ;Yang, L. G. ;Yeh, C. H. ;Huang, C. B.Shi, J. W.Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) operated in W-band (75 GHz-0.11 THz) is of particular interests, since this frequency band can carry signals at much higher data rates. We demonstrate a 10 Gb/s optical carrier-distributed network with the wireless communication system. The mm-wave signal at carrier frequency of 0.1 THz is generated by a high speed near-ballistic uni-traveling carrier photodiode (NBUTC-PD) based transmitter (Tx), which is optically excited by optical short pulses. The optical pulse source is produced from a self-developed photonic mm-wave waveform generator (PMWG), which allows spectral line-by-line pulse shaping. Hence these optical pulses have high tolerance to fiber chromatic dispersion. The W-band 10 Gb/s wireless data is transmitted and received via a pair of horn antennas. The received 10 Gb/s data is envelope-detected and then used to drive an optical modulator at the remote antenna unit (RAU) to produce the upstream signal sending back to the central office (CO). 20 km single mode fiber (SMF) error free transmission is achieved. Analysis about the optimum repetition rate of the optical pulse source and the transmission performance of the upstream signal are also performed and discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. H.Wu, Y. F.Fiber-to-the-antenna (FTTA) system can be a cost-effective technique for distributing high frequency signals from the head-end office to a number of remote antenna units via passive optical splitter and propagating through low-loss and low-cost optical fibers. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an optical ultra-wideband (UWB) - impulse radio (IR) FTTA system for in-building and in-home applications. The optical UWB-IR wireless link is operated in the W-band (75 GHz - 110 GHz) using our developed near-ballistic unitraveling-carrier photodiode based photonic transmitter (PT) and a 10 GHz mode-locked laser. 2.5 Gb/s UWB-IR FTTA systems with 1,024 high split-ratio and transmission over 300 m optical fiber are demonstrated using direct PT modulation. K. ;Lee, M. D. ;Pan, C. L.Yao, Y. D.WOx formed by plasmas oxidation shows promising multibit/cell resistance memory characteristics [1]. The simple memory is completely self-aligned, requiring no additional masks and has a small 6F(2) cell size. In this work we introduce a graded oxide device that is highly reliable (250 degrees C baking for > 2,000 hrs). The conduction mechanism and factors affecting the memory reliability are examined extensively.Item type:Item, Adaptive upstream rate adjustment by RSOA-ONU depending on different injection power of seeding light in standard-reach and long-reach PON systems(2012-08-01) ;Yeh, C. H. ;Chow, C. W. ;Shih, F. Y. ;Pan, C. L.光電工程學系The wavelength division multiplexing-time division multiplexing (WDM-TDM) passive optical network (PON) using reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA)-based colorless optical networking units (ONUS) is considered as a promising candidate for the realization of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). And this architecture is actively considered by Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) for the realization of FTTH in Taiwan. However, different fiber distances and optical components would introduce different power budgets to different ONUs in the PON. Besides, due to the aging of optical transmitter (Tx), the power decay of the distributed optical carrier from the central office (CO) could also reduce the injection power into each ONU. The situation will be more severe in the long-reach (LR) PON, which is considered as an option for the future access. In this work, we investigate a WDM-TDM PON using RSOA-based ONU for upstream data rate adjustment depending on different continuous wave (CW) injection powers. Both standard-reach (25 km) and LR (100 km) transmissions are evaluated. Moreover, a detail analysis of the upstream signal bit-error rate (BER) performances at different injection powers, upstream data rates, PON split-ratios under stand-reach and long-reach is presented. W. ;Yeh, C. H. ;Yang, L. G. ;Sung, J. Y.Huang, S. P.To extend the fiber access network into the home, using optical fiber is a good choice. Bend and twist insensitive optical fiber with a large core diameter is particularly attractive, since it is easy to install and connectorize. However, its bandwidth will be severely limited by its large multimodal dispersion. Here, we first reported the design and fabrication of a novel bend and twist insensitive, 80-mu m core-diameter large-core multimode fiber (LCMMF) for in-home data communication. We experimentally demonstrated 10 Gb/s multiple bands data transmission at distances for residential buildings and data centers. The bit-error-rate (BER) performances of the LCMMF under bending and twisting were evaluated. Finally, we also discovered experimentally an important relation between the differential-mode-delay (DMD) and the BER of the fabricated LCMMF. This relationship could be a valuable tool for fiber manufacturers. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Y. ;Chow, C. W. ;Yeh, C. H.Cheng, K. T.We demonstrate experimentally Manchester (MC) coding based W-band (75 - 110 GHz) radio-over-fiber (ROF) system to reduce the low-frequency-components (LFCs) signal distortion generated by two independent low-cost lasers using spectral shaping. Hence, a low-cost and higher performance W-band ROF system is achieved. In this system, direct-beating of two independent low-cost CW lasers without frequency tracking circuit (FTC) is used to generate the millimeter-wave. Approaches, such as delayed self-heterodyne interferometer and heterodyne beating are performed to characterize the optical-beating-interference sub-terahertz signal (OBIS). Furthermore, W-band ROF systems using MC coding and NRZ-OOK are compared and discussed. F. ;Sung, J. Y. ;Chow, C. W. ;Yeh, C. H.Chou, GaryIn this work, we propose and demonstrate a single-mode square-core optical fiber for optical communications. In the proposed square-core single-mode-fiber (SC-SMF), high bandwidth-distance product and low bending loss can be achieved. In this paper, first of all, we discuss the single mode condition of the SC-SMF theoretically and numerically. Then, we discuss the fabrication of the SC-SMF. We also characterize the performances of the proposed SC-SMF, such as the bending loss, and compare it with the standard single mode fiber (SSMF). A 10 Gb/s transmission experiment using 200 m, 500 m and 1 km SC-SMFs are performed. Negligible power penalty is observed.Item type:Item, Mitigation of Signal Distortions Using Reference Signal Distribution With Colorless Remote Antenna Units for Radio-Over-Fiber Applications(2009-11-01) ;Chow, C. W. ;Xu, L. ;Yeh, C. H. ;Wang, C. H.Shih, F. Y.In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a bidirectional radio-over-fiber (ROF) system using a reference signal distribution. In order to minimize the radio-frequency (RF) signal attenuation as well as limit the transmit power to moderate levels, small cell size, or picocell is used in the ROF system. This will result in the need of many base stations (BSs) to provide sufficient network coverage. Because of this, colorless remote antenna unit (RAU) with optical carrier generated and distributed from the head end (HE) is employed. Experimental results show that error-free signal transmission and remodulation using downstream differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and upstream ON-OFF keying (OOK) is achieved in a 20-km reach ROF system. Experimental characterization of the reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA)-based remodulation unit is also performed. Numerical simulation is performed to compare the proposed scheme with several conventional optical millimeter-wave (mm-wave) schemes, including double sideband (DSB), optical carrier suppression (OCS), and single sideband (SSB). Results show that the proposed scheme could be a potential candidate to mitigate signal distortions due to signal fading and code time shifting.Item type:Item, Ring-Based WDM Access Network Providing Both Rayleigh Backscattering Noise Mitigation and Fiber-Fault Protection(2012-10-15) ;Yeh, C. H. ;Chow, C. W. ;Huang, S. P. ;Sung, J. Y.Liu, Y. L.In this paper, we propose and investigate a ring-based wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) providing both Rayleigh backscattering (RB) noise mitigation and fiber-fault protection. The proposed ring-based WDM-PON has a dual-ring architecture to protect and restore any fiber fault. Besides, the ring architecture also can mitigate the RB beat noise, since the RB and the upstream wavelengths are propagating in opposite directions. Here, we discuss and analyze the characteristics of the downstream signals using 10 Gb/s ON-OFF keying (OOK), 10 Gb/s differential phase-shift keying, and 10 Gb/s orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulations, respectively. Moreover, we also investigate the upstream traffic using the 2.5 Gb/s OOK and 10 Gb/s OFDM generated by the directly modulated reflective semiconductor optical amplifier-based optical network unit, respectively.Item type:Item, Stable Multiwavelength Semiconductor Laser Using FWM and SBS-Assisted Filter(2011-11-01) ;Yeh, C. H. ;Chow, C. W. ;Wu, Y. F. ;Shih, F. Y.Chen, J. H.A stable and flattened quadruple-wavelength laser system is proposed and experimentally investigated. The laser consists of an external injection Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) and a stimulated-Brillouin-scattering (SBS)-assisted filter. In the measurement, the power difference (Delta P) of the lasing quadruple-wavelength can be enhanced within 2.0 dB by SBS-assisted filtering after 22-km single-mode fiber (SMF) propagation. In addition, we can change the two injected wavelengths for tuning the quadruple-wavelength. Besides, the output stability of the proposed laser has been studied and analyzed.
