Item type:Item, A hybrid simulated method for analyzing the optical efficiency of a head-mounted display with a quasi-crystal OLED panel(2014-03-10) ;Chang, Kao-Der ;Li, Chang-Yi ;Pan, Jui-Wen ;Cheng, Kuei-Yuan光電系統研究所Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) with a quasi-crystal (QC) structure are analyzed and applied in a head-mounted display (HMD) system in this study. We adopt a hybrid simulated method to evaluate the light extraction efficiency (LEE) and far-field pattern in the air, and study the relationship between them. The simulation results show that OLEDs implanted with the QC structure can provide a collimated far-field pattern to increase the brightness. Using this 10-fold QC arrangement the maxima LEE of the OLEDs can be increased by 1.20 times. Compared with conventional OLEDs, the viewing angle of the OLED panel decreases from 120 degrees to 26 degrees with an improvement in the optical efficiency of the HMD system by 2.66 times. Moreover, the normalized on-axis intensity in the pupil of the eyepiece can be enlarged up to 3.95 times which suggests that the OLED panel can save 74.68% energy while achieving the same onaxis intensity as conventional OLEDs. The lateral color aberration at the corners of the DMD active area can be reduced to 0.48 mu m by our compact ATIR prism. The total prism size is 4091 mm(3). The spot sizes at the corner and the edge are also controlled under 198 mu m. Moreover, we use a light pipe for color uniformity at the center of the DMD active area. Under the two components for color uniformity, the Delta u' v' is well controlled under 0.016 by a 20 mm length of light pipe. The illuminance uniformity at the active area of the DMD chip is higher than 92.8%. The optical efficiency of the light pipe is 94.1%. The UST lens has a throw ratio of 0.23 and a total track of 195mm. The optical elements of the UST lens are comprised of two parts. First, a catadioptric projection lens where the catadioptric function permits reaching an ultrashort throw ratio, short total track, while at the same time requiring fewer lens elements. The second part is a collimating lens which takes advantage of the telecentric condition to generate uniform total internal reflection (TIR) in the TIR prism. With this design, an effective focal length of -1.96mm and a f-number of 2.4 can be obtained. The root mean square spot size and lateral colour of all fields are smaller than one pixel in size. The maximum optical distortion of -0.97% and TV distortion of 0.2% are acceptable. In terms of image quality, the modulation transfer function (MTF) values for all fields are above 0.65 at 0.245 line pairs/mm. Even when the tolerance error is considered, the MTF values for all fields are still above 0.3. The suitability of the novel UST lens design for projection applications is discussed.Item type:Item, Compact camera module testing equipment with a conversion lens(2012-02-27) ;Pan, Jui-Wen ;光電系統研究所 ;生醫電子轉譯研究中心 ;Institute of Photonic SystemBiomedical Electronics Translational Research CenterModified testing equipment for adjusting the back focal length of a compact camera module (CCM) is proposed. The advantages of this modified testing equipment which includes a conversion lens are that it saves on testing space, offers a smaller sized testing chart, as well as high speed chart changing, and variable object distances. The modified testing equipment can produce a test chart of 38.32 mm compared to an equivalent testing chart of 5000 mm with the conventional testing equipment. At the regular object distance of 2000 mm, both total track and testing chart size for the modified test equipment were 8.3% that of the conventional testing equipment. By using this testing equipment, the testing space can be shrunk significantly. The illumination system consists of an RGB LED light source with a collimator lens group and a mirror with a color filter and a lens array integrator instead of an integrated rod so as to improve the uniformity of the light intensity. By using a new total internal reflection prism and projection lens, the whole optical engine is smaller in size and has a higher contrast ratio for image quality. The imaging optical system consists of a total of eight lenses (six spherical lenses and two aspherical lenses), for a total length of 52 mm; a tolerance analysis is conducted. Optical simulation software is used for the system analysis in order to determine the efficiency and uniformity of the light intensity. In this design, the uniformity of the screen reaches more than 82%, and the efficiency increases by more than 44%. The main capability of the novel light separator is to direct the uncontrolled light away from the image system. The working theorem for the novel light separator is derived as well. Uncontrolled light is kept away from the image system by a total internal reflection surface, thereby effectively improving the image quality. Compared with the conventional contrast ratio enhancement method, the FO:FO contrast ratio can be improved from 839:1 to 48250:1, while the image system efficiency remains at 76.2%Item type:Item, Demonstration of a broad band spectral head-mounted display with freeform mirrors(2014-06-02) ;Pan, Jui-Wen ;Che-Wen, Chiang ;Huang, Kuan-Da ;Wu, Chung-Yu光電系統研究所It has been demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the retina can produce visual perception for blind patients suffering from macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. In order to let the retinal chip generate enough electrical stimulation, the near infrared ray source is added to enhance the stimulation current. However, it is a challenge to design a head-mounted display (HMD) that covers both visible and infrared rays. Since the HMD system covers such a broad spectral band, large color aberrations will be induced. In order to eliminate these large aberrations, a mirror system is adopted that will create a no color aberration system. We also use two freeform mirrors (FFMs) to reduce residual aberrations such as spherical aberrations and coma. The FFMs serve as the near-eye viewing optics that magnifies the image which is displayed through a microdisplay. Based on a 0.61 in. microdisplay, the HMD system demonstrates a diagonal field of view (FOV) of 30 degree and an f/# of 3.75, with an exit pupil diameter of 8 mm and eye clearance of 15mm. We integrated imprinting technology and free-form surface design to obtain a lighting module with high illumination efficiency and uniform intensity distribution. Comparison to the traditional direct light emitting diode (LED) luminaire in optical simulations showed an enhancement of the illumination uniformity from 64.9% to 80.0%. The optical efficiency was 79.5%, and the UGR value was controlled under 18.8. For the actual measurement, the finished product had an illumination uniformity of 77.0%, optical efficiency of 76.0%, UGR value of 19.0, and efficacy of 81.4 lm/w. Through this design, the lighting performance was greatly enhanced. But the main disadvantage of the traditional capsule endoscope is the limited field of view. In order to solve this problem, the dual view capsule endoscope (DVCE) was developed. In this work, a dual view illumination system is designed for a DVCE. The dual view illumination system is divided into two sub-systems with a front view illumination lens and a back view illumination lens. The Bezier curves for the front view and back view illumination lenses are used for optimization, based on which we change the radiation pattern of the LED so that the dual view illumination design can support energy for the front view and back view simultaneously while achieving low power consumption and high efficiency. Moreover, a non-uniform illumination process is used to compensate for the problem of uniformity and relative illumination for the DVCE lens. Through this design, we can obtain a uniformity of 91% and an efficiency of 25.2% for front view illumination and uniformity of 91% and an efficiency of 23.5% for back view illumination. Finally, tolerance analysis can also be completed for mass production.Item type:Item, Design of a Hybrid Light Guiding Plate With High Luminance for Backlight System Application(2013-12-01) ;Pan, Jui-Wen ;Hu, Ya-Wen ;光電系統研究所 ;生醫電子轉譯研究中心Institute of Photonic SystemWe proposed a novel backlight system, which consisted of a hybrid light guide plate (LGP) and one diffuser sheet. The hybrid LGP contains a flat plate without any microstructures and one layer of optically patterned film (OPF). Comparing with the conventional edge-lit backlight system, the on-axis luminance could be improved to 6.1 x by using the novel backlight system and the half-luminance angle decreased from 21 deg to 10 deg in vertical direction, and decreased from 21 deg to 6 deg in horizontal direction. At the same time, this design also achieved a uniformity of illumination of 89%. The design can predigest the fabrication and reduce the number of components. Moreover, since the microstructures arrangement was periodical, user could use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the both sides. When user turned on both side LEDs, the on-axis luminance were improved 1.7 x comparing with turning on single side LEDs.Item type:Item, Design of a Novel Integrated Light Guiding Plate without the Reflective Sheet for Backlight Module Application(2012-01-01) ;Hu, Ya-Wen ;Chen, Bo-Tsuen ;Pan, Jui-Wen ;光電系統研究所生醫電子轉譯研究中心We design a backlight system, which consists of a novel light guide plate (LGP) and one diffuser. The non-destructive microwave transmission technique for complex permittivity determination involving cavity perturbation was employed to characterize a set of Al2O3-BP sheets. This was done by filling a rectangular cavity resonator with a standard dielectric Teflon sample and then performing permittivity measurements for the buckypaper (BP) samples in the X-band frequency range (7-12 GHz). Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) was used to analyze the morphology of the MWCNT-BP and the alumina-loaded BP composites. DC electrical resistivity measurements clearly demonstrated conductor-insulator transition. The effect of alumina loadings on the dielectric properties of the synthesized hybrid Al2O3-BP sheet is discussed.Item type:Item, Double biprism arrays design using for stereo-photography of mobile phone camera(2016) ;Sun, Wen-Shing ;Chu, Pu-Yi ;Chao, Yu-Hao ;Pan, Jui-WenTien, Chuen-LinGenerally, mobile phone use one camera to catch the image, and it is hard to get stereo image pair. Adding a biprism array can help that get the image pair easily. So users can use their mobile phone to catch the stereo image anywhere by adding a biprism array, and if they want to get a normal image just remove it. Using biprism arrays will induce chromatic aberration. Therefore, we design a double biprism arrays to reduce chromatic aberration.Item type:Item, Dual view capsule endoscopic lens design(2015-04-06) ;Sheu, Ming-Jen ;Chiang, Che-Wen ;Sun, Wen-Shing ;Wang, Jhi-JoungPan, Jui-WenA dual view capsule endoscopic (DVCE) lens is proposed with front view and back view functions. This is a hybrid lens with a catadioptric mirror and an aspherical surface to support both view functions. The field of view (FOV) for the front view function is 90 degrees. The FOV for the back view function is 260 to 290 degrees. The TV distortion for the front view and back view function is under 30% and 25%. The corner relative illuminations for the two view functions are above 0.53. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) performance at the Nyquist Frequency for the two view functions can be kept above 0.35, even under tolerance they can remain above 0.2. Moreover, the telecentric conditions at the image plane of the DVCE system can support constant magnification through focusing. This condition can reduce the measurement error by slightly defocusing of the lens. Thus, the two view functions can offer physicians a wide viewing angle to deal with lesions over the fold. Comparison with the conventional edge-lit backlight module shows an improvement in the on-axis luminance of the narrow viewing angle mode of 4.3 times and a decrease in the half-luminance angle of 7 degrees in the horizontal direction. When using the wide viewing angle mode, there is an improvement in the on-axis luminance of 1.8 times and an improvement in the half-luminance angle of 54 degrees in the horizontal direction. The uniformity of illuminance can reach 80% in each mode. The backlight optical sheet number is reduced from 5 to 1. In order to obtain these optical parameters, the fractal parameters which includes periodic lengths (L-x, L-y) and fractal dimensions (D-x, D-y) in the modified three-dimensional formula for the fractal surface morphology have been solved first for the rolled surfaces. This three-dimensional formula can provide an effective way to correlate these fractal parameters with the optical parameters using TracePro software, which can help to define rolling conditions efficiently for the specific demand of optical properties. The deterministic results for fractal surface simulations using MATLAB in series and 20 incident angle simulation in TracePro software explain that an increase in D-x and D-y will yield dense profiles which elevates the maximum illuminance and lower down the minimum illuminance. While an increment in L-x and L-y would increase the characteristic distance between two predominant asperities and increase minimum illuminance and decrease maximum illuminance. Finite element analyses prove that different friction coefficients in the upper and lower rolls potentially induce surface deflection and thus affect the optical properties. A high illuminance uniformity can be achieved by making a compromise among the fractal parameters (D-x, D-y, L-x and L-y) such that a small difference in the maximum and minimum illuminances is available.Item type:Item, Efficiency balance of a light guide plate with microstructures for a see-through head-mounted display(2016-02-10) ;Zhao, Kai-Wei ;Pan, Jui-Wen ;光電系統研究所 ;照明與能源光電研究所生醫電子轉譯研究中心The efficiency balance phenomenon for see-through head-mounted displays with different microstructure conditions can be found both theoretically and using optical simulation software. A simple mathematical calculation is used to determine the relationship between the real image (see-through function) energy and the virtual image energy. The simulation is based on factors taken from previous research studies. It is found that the balance value of the optical efficiency remains almost constant (66.63% to 67.38%) under different microstructure conditions. In addition, suitable conditions for the microstructures in see-through head-mounted displays for daily applications can be predicted.
