Item type:Item, A continuously tunable and filterless optical millimeter-wave generation via frequency octupling(2009-10-26) ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Shih, Po-Tsung ;Jiang, Wen-Jr ;Chen, Jason (Jyehong)Peng, Peng-ChunThis work proposes a cost-effective, continuously tunable and filterless optical millimeter-wave (MMW) signal generation employing frequency octupling. Optical MMW signals with 30-dB undesired sideband suppression ratios can be obtained. Since no optical filtering is required, the proposed system can be readily implemented in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) systems. V-band 60-GHz and W-band 80-GHz optical MMW signals are experimentally demonstrated. Because of the high undesired sideband suppression ratio, 60-GHz waveform with 50% duty cycle is observed. The single-sideband (SSB) phase noise of the generated 60-GHz signal is -73 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz. The proposed system is a viable solution for the future ultra-high frequency MMW applications up to 320 GHz using the external modulator with a limited bandwidth of 40 GHz. Unlike conventional star networks, the proposed network is divided into several delta regions, each containing only one feeder fiber. This delta-star structure significantly reduces the complexity and implementation cost of conventional star networks. A concatenated dual-ring structure with the self-healing function is designed to overcome the star's weakness in reliability. Numerous sensor ring subnets (SRSNs) are utilized to serve a large number of fiber Bragg grating sensors. Delta regions are partitioned upon the criterion of inter-region traffic uniformization; this simplifies the interrogation process and time slot assignment. The reconfigurable function for this multipoint sensor network, which is based on the optical switching technique, is utilized to ensure service continuity when fibers fail. The protection mechanism is illustrated with several multiple link failure cases. Finally, an experimental network is implemented to demonstrate the feasibility and survivability of the proposed sensor network.Item type:Item, A Full duplex radio-over-fiber link with Multi-level OFDM signal via a single-electrode MZM and wavelength reuse with a RSOA(2010-02-01) ;Jiang, Wen-Jr ;Lin, Chun-Ting ;Shih, Po-Tsung ;Chen, Jason (Jyehong)Peng, Peng-ChunThis work demonstrates the feasibility of a full duplex Radio-over-fiber (RoF) link employing multi-level OFDM signal via a single-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator and wavelength reuse for uplink utilizing a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). A High spectral efficiency 5-Gb/s 16-QAM OFDM signal with frequency multiplication for the RoF downstream link is demonstrated, and negligible penalty is achieved after 25-km standard single mode fiber transmission. Furthermore, wavelength reuse for a 1.25-Gb/s OOK signal via a RSOA for the upstream link is also demonstrated with a receiver penalty of less than 0.5 dB following 25-km SMF transmission. Unlike the traditional double-sideband with optical carrier suppression modulation scheme, which can carry only the on-off keying data format, the proposed scheme encodes the electrical vector signal on either the upper sideband (USB) or the lower sideband (LSB) only and a pure optical subcarrier on the other sideband. Therefore, phase and amplitude information will be preserved after direct detection. A frequency doubling scheme is employed to reduce the cost of RoF systems. Additionally, the relative intensity between USB and LSB can be easily tuned by adjusting the individual power of electrical driving signals to optimize the performance of the optical radio-frequency signals. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted by using a 1.25 Gb/s BPSK signal at a carrier frequency of 20 GHz. After transmission over 50-km single-mode fiber, the receiver sensitivity penalty is less than 0.5 dB.Item type:Item, A simple model for cavity enhanced slow lights in vertical cavity surface emission lasers(2008-04-01) ;Chou, Chia-Sheng ;Lee, Ray-Kuang ;Peng, Peng-Chun ;Kuo, Hao-ChungLin, GrayWe develop a simple model for the slow lights in vertical cavity surface emission lasers (VCSELs), with the combination of cavity and population pulsation effects. The dependences of probe signal power, injection bias current and wavelength detuning for the group delays are demonstrated numerically and experimentally. Up to 65 ps group delays and up to 10 GHz modulation frequency can be achieved at room temperature at a wavelength of 1.3 mu m. The most significant feature of our VCSEL device is that the thickness of the active region is only several micrometers long. Based on the experimental parameters of quantum dot VCSEL structures, we show that the resonance effect of the laser cavity plays a significant role in enhancing the group delays.Item type:Item, A star-ring-bus architecture for WDM fiber-wireless system(2006-01-01) ;Chiou, Hung-Yu ;Peng, Peng-Chun ;Feng, Kai-Ming ;Peng, Wei-RenChen, JyeHongA self-healing star-ring-bus architecture for high-capacity WDM fiber-wireless system is proposed and verified experimentally. The electrical-pulse modulation induced gain switching of the VCSEL is initiated under external optical NRZ data injection that increases the relaxation oscillation frequency of the homemade VCSEL from 2.2 to 7.4 GHz, thereby enabling its electrical modulation bandwidth up to 10 GHz. The external NRZ injection reduces the lasing threshold and enlarges the modulation depth of the VCSEL so that the converted RZ data pulsewidth can be shortened to 27 ps with a slightly increased peak-to-peak negative frequency chirp of 4.3 GHz (corresponding to a chirp parameter of 122 MHz/ps). The chirp and bit error rate (BER) display strong correlations with the injection power and the biased current of the VCSEL. With external injection, the receiving power required for achieving a BER below 10(-9) at 10 Gbit/s is -19.5 dBm, and a power penalty of 16 dB is observed when the dc bias of the electrical-pulse modulated VCSEL is decreased by only 10% from the threshold condition.Item type:Item, Bit-Error-Rate and Chirp analyses of a Gain-Switching VCSEL based All-Optical NRZ-to-RZ Converter(2008) ;Chi, Yu-Chieh ;Lin, Chia-Chi ;Kuo, Hao-Chung ;Peng, Peng-ChunLin, Gong-RuSingle-wavelength gain-switching VCSEL based all-optical converter is demonstrated to generate RZ data with 2.5Gbit/s bit-error-rate of 10(-9) at receiving power of -29 dBm and reduced frequency chirp of 178 MHz/ps at input optical NRZ power of -21dBm.Item type:Item, Chirp and error rate analyses of an optical-injection gain-switching VCSEL based all-optical NRZ-to-PRZ converter(2008-03-31) ;Lin, Chia-Chi ;Kuo, Hao-Chung ;Peng, Peng-Chun ;Lin, Gong-Ru交大名義發表Optically injection-locked single-wavelength gain-switching VCSEL based all-optical converter is demonstrated to generate RZ data at 2.5 Gbit/s with bit-error-rate of 10(-9) under receiving power of -29.3 dBm. A modified rate equation model is established to elucidate the optical injection induced gain-switching and NRZ-to-RZ data conversion in the VCSEL. The peak-to-peak frequency chirp of the VCSEL based NRZ-to-RZ is 4.5 GHz associated with a reduced frequency chirp rate of 178 MHz/ps at input optical NRZ power of -21 dBm, which is almost decreasing by a factor of 1/3 comparing with chirp on the SOA based NRZ-to-RZ converter reported previously. The power penalty of the BER measured back-to-back is about 2 dB from 1 Gbit/s to 2.5 Gbit/s. The proposed scheme offers better performance, has no RF fading issue, can carry vector signals, and requires no optical filter at remote nodes. After transmission over 25-km single-mode fiber, the proposed scheme successfully achieves less than 0.5-dB sensitivity penalties.Item type:Item, Dynamic Characteristics and Linewidth Enhancement Factor of Quantum-Dot Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers(2009-05-01) ;Peng, Peng-Chun ;Lin, Gray ;Kuo, Hao-Chung ;Yeh, Chao-EnLiu, Jui-NungThis study explores the relative intensity noise characteristics of quantum-dot vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (QD VCSELs). A cost-effective frequency-quadrupling technique capable of generating millimeter-wave signals up to 72 GHz is proposed. The generated optical millimeter-wave signals have very high quality, with an optical carrier and harmonic distortion suppression ratio exceeding 36 dB. An optical modulation scheme that can support a 64-QAM, 16 Gbits/s orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing RoF system is also demonstrated. Results of this study demonstrate that both methods offer realistic solutions to support future wireless systems. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America
