Item type:Item, A stochastic cost efficiency analysis of international tourist hotels in Taiwan(2010-03-01) ;Hu, Jin-Li ;Chiu, Chia-Ning ;Shieh, Hwai-Shuh ;Huang, Chia-Hui管理科學系The one-stage stochastic frontier approach (SFA) is used in this study to simultaneously estimate cost efficiency scores and factors of cost inefficiency for 66 international tourist hotels in Taiwan during 1997-2006. An SFA model with three outputs and three inputs is defined. The three outputs are room revenue, food and beverage revenue, and other operation revenue while the three inputs are price of labor, price of other operation, and price of food and beverage. This model also takes into account five environmental variables, including dummy variable of the hotels located in non-metropolitan area, dummy variable of chain hotels, the number of tourist guides, the minimum distance from each hotel to Taoyuan international airport and the minimum distance from each hotel to Kaohsiung international airport. Empirical results show that international tourist hotels in Taiwan are on average operating at 91.15% cost efficiency. All nominal variables are transformed into real variables in 1997 prices by GDP deflators. Chain systems, tourist guides, and international transportation can significantly improve the cost efficiency of international tourist hotels in Taiwan. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Using the four-stage approach of Fried etal. [1999. Incorporating the operating environment into a nonparametric measure of technical efficiency. Journal of Productivity Analysis, 12(3), 249-267] and the dynamic DEA model by Tone and Tsutsui [2010. Dynamic DEA: A slacks-based measure approach. Omega, 38(3), 145-156], the study considers the effects of the external operating environments and carry-over activities between two consecutive terms, and calculates managerial efficiency of international tourism hotels in Taiwan. The empirical results show that dynamic DEA provides more stable pure managerial efficiencies than traditional DEA, reflecting the continuity of the links between terms. Then the study employs Tobit regression to estimate the effects of location, management style, and occupancy rate on input slacks. The location in resort area leads to less slacks of employee and room. The chain system helps reduce slacks in room and area of meal department. The slack of employee and room gets lower while occupancy rate gets higher. After controlling the three external environment variables, the efficiency scores of 28 hotels increase, 9 hotels fall, and other 8 hotels still sustain on the efficient frontier.Item type:Item, Cost Efficiency of International Tourist Hotels in Taiwan: A Data Envelopment Analysis Application(2009) ;Hu, Jin-Li ;Shieh, Hwai-Shuh ;Huang, Chia-Hui ;Chiu, Chia-Ning管理科學系This paper uses the data envelopment analysis approach to measure cost, allocative and overall technical efficiencies of international tourist hotels (ITHs) in Taiwan during 1997-2006. There are three outputs, three inputs, three input prices and four environmental variables in the empirical model. The cost inefficiency of these hotels is from overall technical inefficiency. International tourist hotels in Taiwan have an average efficiency of 57%. Chain systems, non-metropolitan areas and occupancy rate have significantly positive impacts on all efficiency scores of Taiwan's ITHs. The distance from the nearest international airport significantly worsens their efficiency scores.Item type:Item, Efficiency of Life Insurance Companies: An Empirical Study in Mainland China and Taiwan(2020-01-01) ;Shieh, Hwai-Shuh ;Hu, Jin-Li ;Ang, Yong-Ze ;交大名義發表National Chiao Tung UniversityThe study employs metafrontier and four-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) to measure the overall and individual efficiency of life insurance companies in mainland China and Taiwan, after applying the slack-based measure (SBM)-DEA model to adjust the differences in the operating environment across production units. The empirical findings show the following: (a) The environmental factors significantly affected the efficiency of all life insurance companies. After the adjustments, the efficiency score of life insurance companies in mainland China and Taiwan drops for 14.01% and 26.64% in regional frontier, and 38.31% and 12.22% in metafrontier frontier. (b) Before 2008, the life insurance companies in Taiwan are more efficient than those in mainland China.Item type:Item, EMPIRICAL APPLICATION OF THE GREEN HOTEL RATING(2012) ;Sheu, Her-Jiun ;Hu, Jin-Li ;Shieh, Hwai-Shuh ;管理科學系經營管理研究所The paper is based on the general conceptual framework of the green hotel rating system Shieh et al, proposed in 2012. We apply this conceptual framework to compare 7 well-known green hotel rating programs, including Green Leaf in North America; Green Seal in the US, Canada's Green Key, the EU's Eco-label and Green Key, Britain's Green Tourism Business Scheme, China's Green Hotel Standard, and LEED. This study finds all 7 green hotel rating programs to date are voluntary, meaning that they are not imposed on tourism businesses by the government or in any other way. Besides, almost all of these 7 rating programs currently have no clear criteria for evaluation to emphasize the ecological conservation dimension, especially in non-ionizing radiation (environmental protection); wildlife conservation, wildlife habitat protection and biodiversity (natural conservation); and ecological engineering method (building infrastructure).Item type:Item, GOING GREEN: DEVELOPING A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE GREEN HOTEL RATING SYSTEM(2012) ;Shieh, Hwai-Shuh ;Hu, Jin-Li ;Shen, Her-Jiun ;管理科學系經營管理研究所Going green is more than a mere fad in the hotel industry, green hotel is becoming the mainstream. Based on the relative literature review, this study tries to develop a general conceptual framework of the green hotel rating system, it consists of 3 main parts including environmental protection, natural conservation and building infrastructure and comprises a total of 20 attributes. The paper proposes a general conceptual framework featuring its complex, multiple, relativistic and dynamic nature as a more comprehensive framework of green hotel rating system to provide authorities and hoteliers a guideline for identifying and implementing practical and measurable criteria to assess green hotels.Item type:Item, SETTING STANDARDS FOR GREEN: AN ANALYSIS OF TAIWAN GREEN HOTEL RATING PROGRAM(2012) ;Shieh, Hwai-Shuh ;Deng, Wen-Ling ;管理科學系Department of Management ScienceThis study first focuses on Taiwan's newly implemented green hotel evaluation scheme, the "Regulatory Standards for Accrediting Green Hotels" and introduces the latest advancement and development in the field. Then, we compare this program with 7 well-known green hotel rating programs. Similar to other programs, Taiwanese is also strong in environmental protection. However, there are two significant differences of Taiwan's rating program: certification not by NGO, and no symbolized rating sign. No matter what kind of rating programs, the results of this study show that almost all of the rating programs' criteria get very little involvement in ecological conservation, so we suggest that rating programs would be made more effective by adding factors of ecological conservation. Surveys should also be conducted on an ongoing basis to clarify and incorporate ecological viewpoints and to keep green hotel rating systems updated. These measures should also enhance the hotel buildings being compatible with the local environment, and the concept of food miles.
