Item type:Item, Anomalous magnetic ordering in b-axis-oriented orthorhombic HoMnO(3) thin films(2008-03-31) ;Lin, T. H. ;Hsieh, C. C. ;Shih, H. C. ;Luo, C. W.Uen, T. M.Orthorhombic HoMnO(3) films with well-aligned crystallographic orientations were deposited on LaAlO(3)(110) single crystal substrates by using pulsed laser deposition. The nearly perfect b-axis-oriented films provide the opportunity of investigating the orientation-dependent physical property of this material. The temperature dependent magnetization evidently displays an antiferromagnetic ordering near 42 K, irrespective to the direction of applied field. Furthermore, the theoretically expected lock-in transition was clearly observed at around 30 K when field was applied along the c axis and was undetectable along the a and b axes. The 30 K transition was suppressed to 26 K when the applied field increased from 100 to 500 Oe. Y.We have observed the coherent acoustic phonons in the hexagonal manganite HoMnO(3) single crystals using wavelength-dependent femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The oscillatory component of the photoinduced transient reflectivity change (Delta R/R) at various pump-probe wavelengths is consistent with the model of strain pulse propagation. Furthermore, the oscillation period of the oscillation is strong temperature- and wavelength-dependent. In particular, the period of all oscillations in Delta R/R for various wavelengths are very similar in the vicinity of the Neel temperature (T(N)), which associates with the appearance of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-range ordering.Item type:Item, Effects of compressive epitaxial strain in the b-axis on the magnetization response of orthorhombic HoMnO(3) thin films(2009) ;Lin, T. H. ;Hsieh, C. C. ;Shih, H. C. ;Luo, C. W.Uen, T. M.The orthorhombic phase HoMnO(3) (o-HMO in Pbnm symmetry setting) thin films were prepared on LaAlO(3)(110) (LAO(110)) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. While for films grown on LAO(110) substrates, the compressive strain along the b-axis was resulted from the tensile strain in the a-c plane. The films provide the opportunity of investigating the effects of strain, hence lattice elasticity, on the physical properties of this material. For o-HMO films an antiferromagnetic ordering with T(N)similar to 42 K, irrespective to the direction of applied field was clearly observed. However, an additional magnetic ordering occurring around 26.4 K was observed when the field was applied along the c-axis of o-HMO. This transition, however, was absent when the field was applied along a-and b-axis. These results indicate that the second magnetic ordering observed along the c-axis could be more relevant to the Mn moments lying along the partially strained b direction of the o-HMO which has been theoretically expected to result in incommensurate-commensurate lock-in transition.Item type:Item, Electronic Structure and Magnetic Anisotropies in Orthorhombic Multiferroic YMnO(3) Thin Films(2009-01-01) ;Hsieh, C. C. ;Lin, T. H. ;Shih, H. C. ;Lin, J-YHsu, C-HThermodynamically YMnO(3) (YMO) can only exist with hexagonal structure at ambient conditions. In this study, we demonstrate that the stain between film and substrate can play an important role in forming orthorhombic YMO (o-YMO). o-YMO films with nearly perfect crystallographic orientation alignment were obtained on LaAlO(3)(110) substrates. These films allow us to unambiguously disclose the intrinsic magnetic property and electronic structure anisotropies along different crystallographic orientations. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition was around 42 K. Moreover, we observed a signature of spin reordering at lower temperatures when the applied field was parallel to the a- or c-axis. On the other hand, only the AFM transition was observed when the field is parallel to the b-axis. By comparing the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) results to standard manganese oxides, YMnO(3) exhibits the dominant Mn(+3) characteristics as that obtained from the standard Mn(2)O(3) powder. The polarization dependent XAS also revealed anisotropic bonding behavior along each crystalline axis.Item type:Item, Electronic Structure and Magnetic Anisotropies in Orthorhombic Multiferroic YMnO3 Thin Films(2009-01-01) ;Hsieh, C. W. ;Wang, Y. T. ;Chen, F. W. ;Shih, H. C.Kobayashi, T.The coherence spike of femtosecond laser pulses in the reflection-type pump-probe measurements has been systematically studied in the semiconductor (100) InP. By varying the setup of the pump-probe measuring system, i.e. the polarizations of pump and probe pulses, the incident angles of pump and probe beams, and the interval of delay time between pump and probe pulses, the dramatic changes in the strength of coherence spike could be clear observed. Furthermore, the proposed methods to remove the coherence spike from the transient reflectivity curves have been demonstrated in the time-domain measurements. S.Hwang, C.The Global Positioning System (GPS) uses static relative positioning to mitigate common errors and has the ability to remove the effects of ocean tidal loading (OTL). OTL effects cannot be completely removed by increasing the baseline length during GPS data processing and must be corrected with OTL models, especially in Taiwan, which is surrounded by the ocean. In this paper, we collected GPS data from ten stations that are located along the coast of Taiwan. The periodic effect of OTL is discussed through a wavelet analysis and a harmonic analysis. We also calculated the amplitudes and phases of the semi-diurnal and diurnal tides to understand the effect of OTL on the GPS heights along the coast of Taiwan. The GPS data were divided into short-term (1 month) and long-term (2 years) categories and were calculated using the Bernese 5.0 software. The tidal data and the GPS heights were transferred into a wavelet spectrum for analysis. We found that in the tidal data, the periodic M2 signal was stronger than the K1 signal, which was not the case for the GPS height data. This result indicated that the common errors were not completely removed from the GPS heights and that the corresponding period was approximately 1 day, which might result in a stronger K1 signal. Moreover, five OTL models were chosen and compared in this case. Although the GPS heights with different OTL corrections were very similar, NAO. 99b was the best fitting model for the ocean around Taiwan. Finally, we analyzed the tidal data and the M2 amplitudes and phases of the GPS heights using a harmonic analysis and compared the results with the NAO. 99b model. The comparison indicated that the best agreement occurred in southwestern Taiwan and that the poorest agreement occurred in southeastern Taiwan with a maximum error of 0.3 cm. The phase results showed that the OTL model overlapped with the tidal data in the open ocean around central Taiwan, and both the GPS heights and the heights from the OTL model were 1.5 to 2 h earlier than the tidal data.Item type:Item, Magnetic ordering anisotropy in epitaxial orthorhombic multiferroic YMnO(3) films(2008-11-15) ;Hsieh, C. C. ;Lin, T. H. ;Shih, H. C. ;Hsu, C. -H.Luo, C. W.Orthorhombic YMnO(3) thin films with (200), (020), and (001) orientations were, respectively, obtained by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO(3)(110), LaAlO(3)(110), and SrTiO(3)(001) substrates. The results demonstrate that the strain between film and substrate can serve as an alternative in transforming the thermodynamically stable hexagonal YMnO(3) into the orthorhombic phase, which previously could be obtained with high-pressure high temperature syntheses and epitaxy-stabilized thin film processes. More importantly, these films allow us, for the first time, to unambiguously disclose the intrinsic magnetic property along different crystallographic orientations. Our results show that, although the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering remains the same, there is an additional spin reordering transition which is very much dependent on the crystallographic orientation along which the measuring field was applied and on the in-plane crystallographic alignment of the films. Detailed analyses indicate that the origin of the observed second reordering may be due to some strain-induced canted AFM state instead of the incommensurate lock-in transitions conceived previously.Item type:Item, Magnetic ordering anisotropy in epitaxial orthorhombic multiferroic YMnO3 films(2008-11-15) ;Hsieh, C. M.We analyze the photo-induced carrier and magnetization dynamics in antiferromagnetic (AFM) HoMnO(3) single crystals, delineated by wavelength-dependent femtosecond spectroscopy. The emergence of long-range and short-range magnetic order are unambiguously revealed in association with an abnormal blueshift of Mn(3+) 3d level around the Neacuteel temperature and the slope variation in the temperature-dependent transient reflectivity change (Delta R/R) near the Neacuteel transition, respectively. Furthermore, the disturbance (in ps time scale) of the AFM ordering and its reordering time (in a few 100 ps time scale) are clearly identified in the negative Delta R/R..Item type:Item, Magnetization dynamics and the Mn3+ d-d excitation of hexagonal HoMnO3 single crystals using wavelength-tunable time-resolved femtosecond spectroscopy(2009-07-01) ;Shih, H. W. ;Lee, C. C. ;Li, C. H. ;Shih, H. C.Chen, Y. -J.We report on the formation of organized sub-micron YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) (YBCO) dots induced by irradiating femtosecond laser pulses on YBCO films prepared by pulse laser deposition with fluence in the range of 0.21 similar to 0.53 J/cm(2). The morphology of the YBCO film surface depends strongly on the laser fluences irradiated. At lower laser fluence (similar to 0.21 J/cm(2)) the morphology was pattern of periodic ripples with sub-micrometer spacing. Slightly increasing the laser fluence to 0.26 J/cm(2) changes the pattern into organized sub-micron dots with diameters ranging from 100 nm to 800 nm and height of 150 nm. Further increase of the laser fluence to over 0.32 J/cm(2), however, appeared to result in massive melting and led to irregular morphology. The mechanism and the implications of the current findings will be discussed. Arrays of YBCO sub-micron dots with T(c) = 89.7 K were obtained. C. ;Hsieh, C. C. ;Luo, C. W.Lin, J-YWe investigated the magnetic and ferroelectric properties of c-axis oriented orthorhombic phase HoMnO(3) (o-HMO in Pbnm symmetry setting) thin films grown on Nb-doped SrTiO(3)(001) substrates. The o-HMO films exhibit an antiferromagnetic ordering near 42 K, irrespective of the orientation of the applied field. However, an additional magnetic ordering occurring around 35 K was observed when the field was applied along the c-axis of o-HMO, which was absent when the field was applied in the ab-plane. The magnetocapacitance measured along the c-axis showed that although there is evidence of dielectric constant enhancement when the temperature is below 35 K the expected abrupt change in dielectric constant appears at a much lower temperature and reaches maximum around 13.5 K, indicating that the low-temperature c-axis polarization might be related to the ordering of the Ho(3+) moment. The lattice constant analyses using x-ray diffraction and the observation of a slight magnetization hysteresis suggest that the weak second magnetic transition along the c- axis at 35 K might be more relevant to the strain-induced effect on antiferromagnetism.Item type:Item, Strain-induced effects on antiferromagnetic ordering and magnetocapacitance in orthorhombic HoMnO3 thin films(2009-01-14) ;Lin, T. Y. ;Yang, J. C. ;Shih, H. C. ;Liang, C. W.Wu, T. -Y.The ultrafast dynamics in (100)-oriented BiFeO(3) thin films were studied from 20 K to 300 K by using the dual-color femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, which were performed by the 400 nm (3.1 eV) pump pulses above the energy gap of 2.67 eV and the 800 nm (1.55 eV) probe pulses below the energy gap of 2.67 eV. From the temperature-dependent transient reflectivity changes (Delta R/R), the anomalous changes were clearly observed below 200 K caused by magnons. Thus, the femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy could unambiguously reveal the magnetization dynamics in BiFeO(3) with strong magnetoelectric coupling.Item type:Item, Ultrafast Dynamics of BiFeO3 Thin Films Studied by Dual-Color Femtosecond Spectroscopy(2011-01-01) ;Chen, L. C. ;Lin, T. H. ;Hsieh, C. C. ;Lee, J. M.Luo, C. W.The photoinduced changes in reflectivity (Delta R/R) at energies closed to the Mn d-d optical transition of HoMnO(3) single crystal have been systematically measured from 300K to 30 K by time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy. The oscillation induced by the propagation of strain pulse was clearly observed in the Delta R/R signal with various probing wavelength. Moreover, the different relaxation processes of photoexcited carriers with in various wavelengths may be led by the blue shift of Mn(3+) d level.Item type:Item, Ultrafast optical probes of polaron dynamics in La(0.7)Ca(0.3)MnO(3) thin films(2009-02-15) ;Wu, K. H. ;Hsu, T. Y. ;Shih, H. C. ;Chen, Y. J.Luo, C. W.In this work, we use ultrafast optical pump-optical probe spectroscopy to probe the polaron dynamics in La(0.7)Ca(0.3)MnO(3) (LCMO) thin films. The temporal evolution in transient reflectivity change Delta R/R exhibits two relaxing components: a fast component with a time constant of subpicosecond and a slow component with time constant ranging from tens of picoseconds to hundreds of picoseconds. The amplitude of the fast component, though has been seldom discussed before, exhibits the similar temperature dependence with that of the resistivity and the neutron scattering intensity due to nanoscale correlated polarons. The results strongly suggest that the fast photoinduced reflectivity change may have been due to the photoexcitation and trapping process of correlated Jahn-Teller polarons in the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and, thus, implies the presence of electronic inhomogeneity in LCMO manganites.Item type:Item, Ultrafast optical probes of polaron dynamics in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin films(2009-02-15) ;Wu, K.
