Item type:Item, A convenient modular approach of functionalizing aromatic polyquinolines for electrooptic devices(1999-08-01) ;Ma, H ;Jen, AKY ;Wu, JY ;Wu, XMLiu, SA versatile and generally applicable synthetic method for making second-order nonlinear optical (NLO)side-chain aromatic polyquinolines has been developed. This approach emphasizes the ease of incorporating NLO chromophores onto the pendent phenyl moieties of parent polyquinolines at the final stage via a mild Mitsunobu reaction, which provides the synthesis of NLO polyquinolines with a broad variation of polymer backbones and great flexibility in the selection of chromophores. The synthesized NLO side-chain polyquinolines possess high glass transition temperature (T-g > 200 degrees C), good processability, and excellent thermal stability. The promising results of electrooptic (EO) activity (up to 35 pm/V at 830 nm and 22 pm/V at 1300 nm), optical loss (1.5-2.5 dB/cm), and long-term stability of the poling-induced polar order (r(33) values retained > 90% of their original values at 85 degrees C for more than 1000 h) have demonstrated the advantages of this design approach. The excellent combination of these properties in the resulting polymers have also provided a great promise in the development of EO devices.Item type:Item, A new synthetic approach for nonlinear optical chromophores possessing enhanced thermal stability(1996-09-23) ;Shu, CF ;Tsai, WJ ;Jen, AKY ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryA synthetic strategy for NLO chromophores containing cyclic-locked, conjugated triene segment has been developed. The presence of the rigid spirobifluorene linkage imparts significant improvement in the material's glass transition temperature and morphological stability, while preserving most of the photophysical and electronic properties of its non-spiro, biphenyl analogue, DPVBi. Organic electroluminescent devices having the structure ITO/NPB/DPVSBF/AlQ/LiF/Al display bright emissions with a lambda(max) at 474 nm (CIE coordinates: 0.16, 0.24) and exhibit maximum luminescence exceeding 40,000 cd/m(2). At a driving current density of 100 mAcm(2) (6.4 V), a luminance of 4110 cd/m(2) was obtained with external quantum efficiency of 2.54%, luminance efficiency of 4.1 cd/A, and power efficiency of 2.0 lm/W. Moreover, the DPVSBF-based device exhibits a 16-fold enhancement in the operation lifetime relative to that of a similar device based on DPVBi. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Due to a balanced charge injection and transport in PF-TPA-OXD and very efficient energy transfer from this polymer to the Os complex, the resulting device (indium tin oxide/HTL/OsCF3:PF-TPA-OXD/Ca/Ag) reaches a maximum external quantum efficiency of 2.1% with a peak brightness of 2920 cd/m(2). These results are significantly higher than those obtained from the commonly used host, PVK:PBD (0.49% and 1270 cd/m(2)). The resulting white light-emitting device reaches a maximum external quantum efficiency of 0.82% and a maximum brightness of 12 900 cd/m(2) at 12 V. The Commission Internationale d'Enclairage chromaticity coordinates of the device remain very close to that of pure white emission at a relatively broad bias range from 6 V (x=0.36, y=0.37) to 12 V (x=0.34, y=0.34). Particular relevance is given to the calculation of the vibrational properties (i.e. force constants, infrared and Raman intensities) which are used for the evaluation of the vibrational contribution to static molecular hyperpolarizabilities. The theoretical predictions are compared with experimental measurements of the quantities of interest on suitable molecules purposely synthesized. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. We have investigated this polymer's thermal properties, electronic properties (viz., absorption and photoluminescence), and electrochemical behavior. Photoluminescence studies indicate that color tuning can be achieved through efficient Forster energy transfer from the higher-energy polyfluorene backbone to the lower-energy pendant DPAS units. We have fabricated light-emitting diodes with the structure indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/ emitting layer/1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene (TPBI)/Mg:Ag. The devices, based on blends of PF-DPAS in polyfluorene-triphenylamine-oxadiazole (PF-TPA-OXD), exhibit significant improvements in device performance relative to that of the pure PF-TPA-OXD device; we attributed this improvement to both a red-shift of the electroluminescence (EL) spectra and an enhancement in quantum efficiency. At a blend ratio of 1:20, the EL spectrum is voltage-independent and stable, and exhibits the characteristic emission of a DPAS moiety: a peak at 461 nm and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.1.5, 0.18). The maximum external quantum efficiency is 2.08 % (2.87 cd A(-1)) at a bias of 9 V (86.1 mA cm(-2)) with a brightness of 2467 cd m(-2); the maximum brightness (6916 cd m-2) occurred at an applied voltage of 13 V and a current density of 361 mA cm(-2).Item type:Item, Dendritic poly(ether-imide)s: synthesis, characterization, and modification(2001-03-01) ;Leu, CM ;Shu, CF ;Teng, CF ;Shiea, J應用化學系A convergent approach to the preparation of dendritic macromolecules with an aromatic ether-imide inner structure and modifiable benzyl ether chain ends is described. The structural component that constitutes the branching regions was derived from 1-(4-aminophenyl)-1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane. The key steps in ether-imide dendron synthesis involve an aromatic nucleophilic displacement of an activated nitro group with phenoxide leading to the ether linkage and cyclocondensation of the amino group with 3-nitrophthalic anhydride, to give rise to the imide ring containing an activated nitro functionality. The dendritic wedges are then coupled to a polyfunctional core to complete the synthesis. The benzyl ether chain ends can be selectively removed by catalytic hydrogenolysis to produce a dendrimer with phenolic chain ends. Further modification of the chain ends is accomplished by etherfication of the phenolic groups. Structures of these dendritic poly(etherimide)s were confirmed by H-1 NMR,C-13 NMR and FTIR spectroscopy as well as by mass spectrometry. Properties such as the glass transition temperature and solubility of the dendrimer are greatly affected by the nature of the end groups. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. The presence of the rigid spiro-cycloalkyl pendent groups not only hinders the close packing and intermolecular interactions between polymer chains, but also preserves the molecular rigidity of the polymer, leading to polyfluorenes with high glass transition temperatures and improved thermal and spectral stabilities. The results of photoluminescence measurements of the isothermally heated spiro-polyfluorene thin films (150degreesC for 20h) show that the commonly observed aggregate/excimer formation is suppressed effectively in these polymers. Blue electroluminescence was demonstrated in a double-layer LED device using the spiro-derivatized polyfluorene as the emitting layer. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. This structural feature leads to a reduction in the tendency to crystallize and an increase in the glass transition temperature. Electrochemical studies revealed that these materials undergo reversible reductions and have high electron affinities. Each fluorene-based oxadiazole exhibited reasonably good performance when it was used as the electron-transporting layer in a multi-layer organic EL device. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The N-phenylpyrazole ligands, dfpzH = 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyrazole, fpzH = 1-(4-fluorophenyl)-pyrazole, dfmpzH = 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-3,5-dimethylpyrazole, and fmpzH = 1-(4-fluorophenyl)-3,5-dimethylpyrazole, show a similar reaction pattern with respect to the typical cyclometalated (C boolean AND N) chelate, which utilizes its orthosubstituted phenyl segment to link with the central Ir(III) atom, while the second 2-pyridylpyrazole (or triazole) ligand, namely, fppzH = 3-(trifluoromethyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole, fptzH = 3-(trifluoromethyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)triazole, and hptzH = 3-(heptafluoropropyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)triazole, undergoes typical anionic (N boolean AND N) chelation to complete the octahedral framework. X-ray structural analyses on complexes [(dfPZ)(2)Ir(fppz)] (1a) and [(fMPZ)(2)Ir(hptz)] (3d) were established to confirm their molecular structures. Increases of the pi pi* energy gaps of the Ir(III) metal complexes were systematically achieved with two tuning strategies. One involves the substitution for one or two fluorine atoms at the N-phenyl segment or the introduction of two electron-releasing methyl substituents at the pyrazole segment of the H(CAN) ligands. Alternatively, we have applied the more electron-accepting triazolate in place of the pyrazolate segment for the third (N boolean AND N)H ligand, Our results, on the basis of steady-state, relaxation dynamics, and theoretical approaches, lead to a conclusion that, for complexes 1-3, the weakening of iridium metal-ligand bonding strength in the T-1 state plays a crucial role for the fast radiationless deactivation. For the case of [(fMPZ)(2)Ir(hptz)] (3d), a thermal deactivation barrier of 4.8 kcal/mol was further deduced via temperature-dependent studies. The results provide a theoretical basis for future design and synthesis of the corresponding analogues suited to blue phosphorescent emitters.Item type:Item, High-efficiency polymer light-emitting diodes using neutral surfactant modified aluminum cathode(2006-03-30) ;Niu, YH ;Jen, AKY ;Shu, CF ;應用化學系Department of Applied ChemistryHigh-efficiency polymer light-emitting diodes were fabricated by inserting a layer of nonionic neutral surfactant between the electroluminescent (EL) layer and the high-work-function aluminum cathode via spin coating. It was found that both the poly(ethylene glycol)- and poly(propylene glycol)-based surfactants as well as their copolymers can all demonstrate similar performance enhancement. Device performances comparable to or even better than those of the control devices using calcium as the cathode have been achieved for both poly(p-phenylene)-based and polyfluorene-based conjugated polymers with orange-red, green, and blue emission colors. It is possible that when both surfactant and aluminum are used as the cathode, the abundant hole injection through a hole-transporting layer and hole pile-up at the inner side of the EL/surfactant interface might cause an effective electric field to induce the realignment of the dipole moment of those polar surfactant molecules, thus lowering the barrier for electron injection. In addition, the coordination between the aluminum and oxygen atoms on the surfactant might cause n-type doping in the areas near surfactant in the EL polymer layer that causes the enhancement of electron injection.Item type:Item, Highly efficient blue-light-emitting diodes from polyfluorene containing bipolar pendant groups(2003-09-09) ;Shu, CF ;Dodda, R ;Wu, FI ;Liu, MSJen, AKYA highly efficient blue-light-emitting copolymer with bulky hole-transporting triphenylamine (TPA) and electron-transporting oxadiazole (OXD) pendant groups at the C-9 position of fluorene was synthesized. The results from photoluminescence and electrochemical measurements reveal that both the side chains and the polyfluorene main chain retain their own electronic characteristics in the copolymer. It shows a pure blue emission with no aggregates or excimers formed even after being annealed at 150 degreesC under nitrogen for 20 h. In addition, it also demonstrates improved charge injection and balanced charge transport in electroluminescence. The maximum external quantum efficiency of a single-layer device using this copolymer as the emitting layer is 1.21% (at a brightness of 354 cd/m(2) with driving voltage of 7.6 V). The maximum luminance of the device reaches 4080 cd/m(2) at a bias of 12.0 V and a current density of 640 mA/cm(2).Item type:Item, Highly efficient electrophosphorescent devices with saturated red emission from a neutral osmium complex(2005-06-28) ;Niu, YH ;Tung, YL ;Chi, Y ;Shu, CFKim, JHHighly efficient electrophosphorescent polymer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with saturated red emission (Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates exactly at x = 0.67, y = 0.33) are achieved by blending a novel neutral Osmium complex into a single-component bipolar polymer host that possesses balanced hole- and electron-transporting ability. By using a tetraphenylenebiphenyldiamine (TPD)-based cross-linkable hole-transport layer as well as a layer of 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene (TPBI) as an electron-tran sport layer, a device structure with both effective hole/electron injection and efficient carriers/excitons blocking or confinement at both electrode sides is constituted. In this way, external quantum efficiency 12.8% is reached the first time with an organometallic complex with heavy metal core other than iridium.Item type:Item, Highly efficient light-emitting diodes based on fluorene copolymer consisting of triarylamine units in the main chain and oxadiazole pendent groups(2005-11-01) ;Wu, FI ;Shih, PI ;Shu, CF ;Tung, YLChi, YWe have synthesized a fluorene-based copolymer, PFA-OXD, which possesses bipolar charge-transporting functionalities, through the incorporation of electron-rich triphenylamine moieties and electron-deficient oxadiazole pendent groups into the polymer backbone and onto the C9 position of each fluorene repeating unit, respectively. The propeller-shaped triphenylamine units in the main chain and the rigid cardo-type OXD side chains endow this polymer with a very high glass transition temperature (306 degrees C) and good thermal stability, without sacrificing its good solution processability. Both in dilute solution and as a thin film, PFA-OXD exhibits a bright blue emission upon excitation of either the main chain or oxadiazole side chains; this phenomenon indicates that efficient energy transfer occurs from the photoexcited pendent groups to the polymer backbone. An organic light-emitting device incorporating this copolymer as the emitting layer exhibits a voltage-independent and stable blue emission having color coordinates (0.14, 0.15) at 9 V; the maximum brightness was 7128 cd m(-2) and the maximum luminance efficiency was 2.07 cd A(-1). In addition, doping PFA-OXD as a host material with 2.6 wt % of a red-emitting phosphorescent dye, Os(fppz), led to a high-brightness, highly efficient red electroluminescent device having CIE coordinates of (0.65, 0.34), a maximum brightness of 28 440 cd m(-2), and a maximum external efficiency of 9.30%.Item type:Item, Highly efficient red electrophosphorescent devices based on an iridium complex with trifluoromethyl-substituted pyrimidine ligand(2004-08-30) ;Niu, YH ;Chen, BQ ;Liu, S ;Yip, HBardecker, JHighly efficient red-emitting electrophosphorescent devices were fabricated by doping an iridium (Ir) complex containing trifluoromethyl (CF3)-substituted pyrimidine ligand into a conjugated bipolar polyfluorene with triphenylamine and oxadiazole as side chains. The device efficiency can be enhanced through effective exciton confinement using a layer of 1,3,5-tris(N- phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene on the cathode side and a layer of in situ polymerized tetraphenyldiamine-perfluorocyclobutane on the anode side. For a blend with 5 wt % of the Ir complex, a maximum external quantum efficiency of 7.9 photon/electron % and a maximum brightness of 15800 cd/m(2) are reached with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of x=0.65 and y=0.34. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.Item type:Item, Highly efficient red phosphorescent osmium(II) complexes for OLED applications(2004-07-19) ;Tung, YL ;Wu, PC ;Liu, CS ;Chi, YYu, JKThe nonionic, red-emitting complexes [Os(fppz)(2)L-2] (L = PPh2Me (1), PPhMe2 (2)) and [Os(bptz)(2)L-2] (L = PPh2Me (3)) were synthesized, showing highly intense red phosphorescent emission in CH2Cl2 solution at lambda(max) 617, 632, and 649 nm, respectively. The electroluminescent properties of these compounds on OLEDs showed promising device efficiencies required for future OLED applications.Item type:Item, Highly efficient red-electrophosphorescent devices based on polyfluorene copolymers containing charge-transporting pendant units(2005-07-28) ;Wu, FI ;Shih, PI ;Tseng, YH ;Chen, GYChien, CHWe have systematically examined the photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) behavior of blends comprising two efficient red phosphors doped, respectively, into the blue-emitting polyfluorene derivatives PF-TPA-OXD and PF-OXD. The host polymers, which contain both hole- and electron-transporting or merely electron-tran sporting side chains, are capable of facilitating charge injection and transport. After determining the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of these materials, we were able to match the dopant with its most suitable host to achieve the direct formation and confinement of an exciton at the dopant. This configuration also leads to a reduction in the electrical excitation of the host polymer, which in turn decreases the degree of exciton loss arising from nonradiative decay of the host triplet. Using this approach, we were able to realize the production of high-performance red-electrophosphorescent devices. For Os(fppz)-doped devices, we obtain a balanced charge recombination in conjunction with higher current and luminance when using PF-TPA-OXD as the host matrix; this device reached a maximum external quantum efficiency of 8.37% with a peak brightness of 16 720 cd/m(2). The absence of charge-transporting pendant units, i.e., the device fabricated from poly [9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diyl] (POF), led, however, to relatively poor electroluminescence characteristics (5.81% and 2144 cd/m(2)).
