Item type:Item, Multi-port polarization-independent optical quasi-circulators by using a pair of holographic spatial- and polarization-modules(2004-02-23) ;Chen, JH ;Hsieh, PJ ;Su, DC ;Su, JC光電工程學系In this paper we proposed an alternative type of multi-port polarization-independent optical quasi-circulator by using a pair of holographic spatial- and polarization-modules. The prototype is fabricated and experimentally tested. In addition, the operating principles, the characteristics and the performances of this device are discussed. The merits of this design include polarization-independence, compactness, high isolation, low polarization mode dispersion, and easy fabrication. Furthermore, the number of ports can be scaled up easily. With the SiO2 layer as the etch hard mask, silicon was etched based on HBr chemistry with additions of O-2 and SF6 . The effects of O-2 content on the sidewall anisotropy, etch rate, and etch selectivity over the SiO2 mask were also examined. The RIE lag, where etching of a small trench (hole) lags behind a large trench (hole), was investigated to produce an optimum aspect ratio for each zone of the diffractive optical element. The regression relation of the etch depth versus zone width was determined as a guideline for the feasibility of this method. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. We propose an improved compensation method to physically correct these effects in the fabrications of volume holograms for optical interconnects. In order to show the validity of this method, Slavich photographic plate VRP-M is used to fabricate optical interconnects. The correction of the Bragg diffraction angle shift of about 2.10degrees, which is induced by 6.14% film shrinkage and 0.06 refractive index shift, is successfully demonstrated with the surface-normal configuration. A shrinkage- and refractive-index shift-corrected volume hologram with 23% diffraction efficiency is experimentally confirmed. The methodology proposed is applicable to other phase media when the associated film shrinkage and refractive-index shift data are experimentally determined. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.
