Item type:Item, A simple dispersion measurement of fiber gratings by interferometric technique(2006-01-01) ;Sheu, LG ;Chen, JM ;Yu, SY ;Hsu, KCTsai, MCA simple dispersion measurement of fiber gratings using an un-balanced Michelson interferometer is proposed. A broadband source and an optical spectrum analyzer are used to scan the interference spectrum, and then the group time delay can be obtained rapidly by Fourier transform processing the interference spectrum. We measured the group time delays of a uniform-period FBG, a chirped FBG, an arrayed-waveguide grating interleaver, and a thin-film filter type OADM by an un-balanced Michelson and Mach-Zehnder interferometers, respectively. The experimental results excellent match the measured results of the optical network analyzer. The experimental repeatability is shown to be better than 1ps.Item type:Item, Accuracy of the EasyTouch blood glucose self-monitoring system: a study of 516 cases(2004-11-01) ;Dai, KS ;Tai, DY ;Ho, P ;Chen, CCPeng, WCBackground: Self-monitoring blood glucose device is an important toot for diabetes patients to efficiently control their blood glucose concentrations. We evaluated the accuracy of EasyTouch glucose monitoring system. Methods: Capillary blood glucose concentrations measured using EasyTouch and the reference values obtained from Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI) 2300 STAT were performed in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Wei-Gong Memorial Hospital. Results were evaluated using (1) linear regression analysis, (2) Clarke Error Grid analysis, (3) percentage of readings within a defined range of deviation from the reference value, (4) bias plots, and (5) coefficients of variation (CVs) calculated from 60 measurements in series. Results: The window of the 516 EasyTouch readings covered a range from 42 to 555 mg/dl. Linear regression analysis yielded a regression slope 0.9972, intercept 1.899 mg/dl, r(2) 0.9571, and Syx 14.89 mg/dl. A Clarke Error Grid analysis showed 100% of the EasyTouch readings in clinically acceptable zones A and B. Of the EasyTouch readings, 98.3%, 91.9%, 78.3% and 46.9% were found within +/-20%, +/-15%, +/-10%, and +/-5%, respectively, of the reference values. Further analysis showed that the percentage of EasyTouch readings within the defined intervals was similar in three glucose ranges (less than or equal to100, 101-200, and greater than or equal to201 mg/dl). The CVs for the four lots of strips (lot 1 to lot 4) ranged from 3.5 to 5.5%, 2.1 to 4.8%, 1.8 to 3.6%, and 3.0 to 5.7%, respectively. Conclusions: EasyTouch provides high accurate and precise glucose readings over a wide range of glucose concentrations. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Cytosolic calcium overloading occurs in atrial fibrillation (AF), and this fulfills the condition needed for activation of this pathway. We therefore investigated the NFAT pathway in atrial tissue in a porcine model of AF. Methods and results: AF was induced in eight adult pigs by rapid atrial pacing. Investigations on the calcineurin and NFAT pathway were performed on transmural left atrial tissue obtained 6 weeks after implantation of the pacemaker (pacing for 4 weeks, and AF without pacing for 2 weeks). In the AF group, the left atrial dimension increased significantly (26 4 mm vs 31 4 mm respectively, p < 0.05 [mean +/- SD]) Calcineurin enzyme activity increased significantly in pigs with AF (n = 8) when compared to control pigs (n = 6) [0.143 +/- 0.034 vs 0.038 +/- 0.063 mmol PO4- released, p < 0.01]. We found that both NFAT-c3 and NFAT-c4, the downstream effectors of calcineurin, increased significantly in the nuclei in AF tissue using immunoblotting. Translocation of NFAT-c3 and NFAT-c4 into the nuclei was also demonstrated in AF tissue microsections using immunohistochemistry. The electrophoresis mobility shift assay further demonstrated that nuclear extracts from AF tissue had a significantly larger binding capacity for NFAT-specific oligonucleotide probes. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that calcineurin activity was increased in AF with subsequent NFAT-c3 and NFAT-c4 translocation into the nucleus. Activation of this signal transduction pathway may play an important role in the pathogenesis of AF.Item type:Item, Applications of microtube array on transtlective liquid crystal displays for backlight efficiency enhancement(2004-12-01) ;Yang, YS ;Huang, YP ;Shieh, HPD ;Tsai, MCTsai, CYA novel transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with a microtube array structure to make the most effective use of backlight was demonstrated. By redefining the area ratio of transmissive and reflective regions, high light efficiency in both transmissive and reflective subpixels can be attained. Based on the principle of light collection, a simulation model was established to characterize the features and optimize the microtube array structure. Furthermore, a typical TFT-LCD process was utilized to fabricate the optimized structure. A prototype microtube array was fabricated, and the measured enhancement of backlight utilization efficiency can be as high as a factor of 1.81.Item type:Item, The decay number and the maximum genus of diameter 2 graphs(2001-01-06) ;Fu, HL ;Tsai, MC ;Xuong, NH ;應用數學系Department of Applied MathematicsLet zeta (G) (resp. xi (G)) be the minimum number of components (resp. odd size components) of a co-tree of a connected graph G. For every 2-connected graph G of diameter 2, it is known that m(G)greater than or equal to 2n(G) - 5 and xi (G)less than or equal to zeta (G)less than or equal to4. These results define three classes of extremal graphs. In this paper, we prove that they are the same, with the exception of loops added to vertices. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Our result is a common generalization of a theorem of Glukhov [5] and a theorem of Nebesky [15].
